"We probably all have this idea – I know I did before I had kids – that to be a perfect mother, you have to be a perfect person and that's just not true. You have to do your best and be willing to put your child before you." Angelina revealed that Maleficient "loves being a mom," and confirmed that that actress does, too.
"We all have something inside of us that maybe we feel is misunderstood or if we let it out completely and be completely who we are it might not be accepted. But then I think what are we doing on this earth if we can't figure out what that is that makes us uniquely us, to be it and then to find those who accept us for it."
Talking about how to cope when others are critical, Angelina said: "I hope everybody pushes back, there's so much judgement these days. Be more and more yourself and shut it down." As to her experience working on the film, Angelina said it was "a dream," gushing about her co-stars Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer.
She said that Elle, who also starred alongside her in the 2014 original, was: "Just as kind and as grateful as ever, she's grown into such an extraordinary young woman," and called Michelle Pfeiffer, "Brilliant and funny and wonderful."






ET spoke with the 44-year-old actress at Wednesday's premiere of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in London, where she stunned in a custom Ralph & Russo gown and was joined by four of her children, 14-year-old Zahara, 13-year-old Shiloh and 11-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.
Though Maddox was not able to attend the event -- he's at college in South Korea -- Jolie still made sure to praise her 18-year-old son. "I'm so happy for him that [Maddox has] grown up into such a good man," she gushed. "I say that 'cause he's smart and he's doing his work but he's also wild. He's balanced in his teenage years."
Jolie also revealed, "He got tattooed."
The Oscar-winning actress has had her kids by her side for most of the Maleficent 2 red carpets, with Maddox even joining her at the Tokyo, Japan, premiere. Jolie told ET that she wouldn't have it any other way.
"It would be quite lonely if I was doing it all by myself," she confessed. "It's never fun to focus on yourself anyway. When you're all taking care of each other and you're making a game out of it and being silly, it's nice for me as a mom. It's moments."
Jolie continued, "I'm also watching my kids grow up and watching my daughter put on a beautiful dress and figure out the right heels and all that mom stuff. It just means a lot."

Q: How do you train for action roles? 
"It's hard, but I try to find time to train.  I'm acting a bit more now because I can't be what my family needs me to be while I'm directing -- it takes a lot more time and effort to direct and I look forward to being able to do that again when things are better."
"But as an actor, you have a good excuse: you have to demand some time to exercise.  Some of the reasons why I chose my recent roles were to push myself, because I knew in order to do them I had to find my strength again.  For Those Who Wish Me Dead  my character is very capable, so I was chopping wood and starting fires."

-- To put the last part in context, recall what she had said in VF two years ago:
"Sometimes women in families put themselves last, until it manifests itself in their own health.”
The necessary training for her acting roles compel her to be give more time for herself, her own health and needs.


Q: As a working mum what does self-care mean to you?
"For most women, it's the thing we don't do or it's the last thing we do.  We almost feel guilty taking time for ourselves.  My mother passed away many years ago and I'm alone as a woman but life still has many lovely moments."

If you read the above carefully, understanding her trend of thought, an explanation is not necessary.

-- She and her Mom were two women caring for themselves.  With her Mom's passing she lost that.  She's alone as a woman  -- she's not alone period.  She is surrounded by her family who cares for her, but none of them are women.  Not yet.  Brad was with her when her Mom passed away which is why she was never alone, then and now, in the absolute sense, and of course Brad is not a woman. 

She told Elle two years ago on the subject of her mother:
"I would give anything for her to be with me at this time. I’ve needed her. I talk to her often in my mind and try to think what she might say and how she might guide me."
As for the man in her life, Brad, she has alluded to him a number of times in other Mon Guerlain promos:
"I wear perfume every day, unless I'm in a country where there is malaria and mosquitoes. It's nice for a woman to have a scent that her lover remembers, who identifies it with her." -- for those times when they couldn't be together.
"I think it is not said enough how much we need the men in our lives to be strong and capable and the best they can be.” "we’re all human and very flawed"
"a full acceptance of yourself... peace comes from that. And makes me better with the people I love."
"I think more vulnerability, more getting you arms around your successes and your failures, makes for a better partner, a better dad, a better son."
Recall also that the longest scene in her video for Mon Guerlain Bloom of Rose shot in the Louvre showed her admiring "Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss" from different angles -- the depiction of the mythical love story where love endures against all odds is described as "a gorgeous rendition of true love." -- their love.

It is also noteworthy that not only does Angelina have a bee conservation project now being aided by Guerlain, but Guerlain's emblem is a bee.

"On Mother's Day my children make me breakfast and pick me flowers – they treat me like a lady," she revealed. "When I do take time for myself, I rediscover that softness I speak of... I also realise I have more fight and resilience in me than I knew. But at my core I'm soft and vulnerable - it's not my dream just to be strong. I want to be allowed to be soft and I don’t want to be harmed or feel unsupported when I am."

HELLO! sat down with the actress and humanitarian while she was in Paris with her godmother, the British actress Jacqueline Bisset. The duo were in town for the launch of Mon Guerlain's Eau de Parfum Intense, which has notes of vanilla as the star ingredient."It's wonderful to be back in Paris. It reminds me that I don't spend nearly enough time here," she said. "Sometimes we're somewhere in our lives and can't really imagine something different – we don't take ourselves out of a place. But when I'm in Paris, I feel like a different person – and I’m curious about that side of myself. It’s enlightening here."

"When I first started working with Guerlain in 2017, we spoke about how perfume commercials often capture a fantasy life – and we wanted to deliver something that was a little heightened but still real. The first Mon Guerlain film was shot at my home in France. For this new perfume, given its strength and our conversations around femininity, freedom and making bold choices, my new home in Cambodia seemed like the natural setting. My [Maddox Jolie-Pitt] Foundation has been based in Cambodia for 17 years and it has been a dream of mine to live in that part of the world. The film is set in the home that I’ve finally built there."

"When your children are little you feel more 'mommy'. When they are teenagers you start to remember yourself as a teenager. You see them going to punk clubs and you wonder why you can't go. I'm in this fun moment where I’m rediscovering myself."

"Kindness – to others and themselves. It's important to be humble – know the freedoms you have and what you've been blessed with and make sure you help others. And always remember your place – we’re all human and very flawed. We're tiny pieces in a much bigger world.  As they grow up, I find my children are strong individuals but still open-minded. I try to lead by example and be kind and gracious, as my mother was – and loving and tolerant. But when there's a fight that needs to be had, get in there. We need to prepare the next generation because there’s so much happening in the world – they’re up against it. I'm working on a programme for children with the BBC. We're counting on our children so we must give them the right knowledge and support."

"I like them all differently," she said when asked how this scent compares to the others. "I just had them all out in the hotel room and I tried to pick a favourite, but I couldn’t. It’s an embarrassment of riches to have these different versions; you don’t know which to wear for day or at night. The new one does seem stronger, though."

Of course she did not appear at the Oscars nor was she expected to. As an executive producer she was not a nominee and would not have received an Oscar if The Breadwinner had won.


"I think a lot of moms don't really rest. And somehow we find real pleasure in that.  I mean, even if I try to take a bath, I'll end up with at least two of my kids in there with me, which is lovely.  I wouldn't trade it all."


None of the children were photographed arriving or leaving the Guerlain HQ so they either used a back entrance or the private fragrance workshop for the family took place elsewhere.  At this point, the family has perfected the art of moving stealthily.


She made no mention of how she had to stay home and put all her work on pause for a year because the children needed her.  That chapter is long past, it's not at the forefront of her thoughts anymore


"We arrived at 1 o'clock this morning. I got up at 8am to do this and this person said to me, "Do you know what you need to do?  Rest.'"

"this person":
- was beside her when she got up at 8am;   
- didn't want her to get up;   
- knew she was tired and didn't have much sleep;
- was concerned about her;
- wanted her to rest;
- was waiting for her in Paris and isn't tired or sleepy;
- isn't looking forward to being with her while she does her work for Guerlain;
- is confident and comfortable challenging her and asserting her health is more important than being on time for her appointments;
- cares deeply for her.
Given all the above, "this person" is more than likely the only member of the family she couldn't publicly acknowledge until the process is officially completed;
- the co-owner of the estate in the South of France
- her husband
- who loves her.

"There’s still much beauty in the world and a lot of love. And a lot of love to be given."

She, Shiloh and Zahara were in Zaatari Camp Jan. 28.  They joined the rest of the family in Paris Jan. 29.

 
"You know all the good stuff in Mommy? She's just that.  Everything about Mommy that you love, when I'm my best and you like my stories, or you think I'm being really sweet and warm and funny -- that's my mom.  All the other stuff, the weird stuff, that's me.  All the good stuff's her."



This latest edition of Mon Guerlain has an influx of jasmine sambac...a symbol of hope and love.  Angelina...you can see how much of herself she gives to others and how close she is to her family.  I wanted to underline that in the composition.

Brief observations:

They have now reestablished contact with People and Hello both of which were given exclusive photos taken by Pax.  Hello also had an exclusive interview where among other things, she explained the rather curious designation of Pax as an official set photographer.  People has not had an interview yet but Mary Green has resumed writing about them so they'll probably be getting one soon.


The photo by Pax that they gave to Hello where lens flares blur her face was obviously meant to leave her hands and ring as the central focus.  Out of the possibly hundreds of photos taken by Pax, she chose this one which offers little else to see as the rest of the frame is out of focus.  That makes two photos that she's had a direct hand in choosing and releasing that both draw attention to her hands and ring  -- the other being the first official photo of Mon Guerlain.   She would have had her choice of photos from the Mon Guerlain sessions as well.  Viewed against the message that she has been reiterating that they are and will always be a family, the message she seems to be sending with her choice of photos that draw attention to her ring is that they are and will always be married -- that they are and will always be a couple.


She also apparently has more than one band that she wears on her ring finger.  There's the gold band with a rope design that appears to match Brad's, and there are a few diamond encrusted ones that she sometimes wears alone or with the gold band.  The one she is wearing above appears to be similar to the one in the Mon Guerlain photo and video.

With her only public comment on Scott Rudin's remarks in the leaked Sony emails: "I've been in this business a long time, and I've been thought of, written about, and judged in many ways.  You just have to try and be the best person you can be.  The most important thing for me is the way my kids see me.  They have the right to expect me to be a great mom and that is what I try to be."
