Red Carpet Interviews

Monday, September 9, 2024

For Salma Hayek Pinault, Angelina Jolie is more than just the director of her latest movie. She is “a family member,” Hayek Pinault, 58, tells PEOPLE on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Toronto International Film Festival world premiere of Without Blood.

When asked about her longtime friendship with Jolie, 49, Hayek Pinault quips, “What do you mean friendship?” She then notes that the two are much closer than that — and “do things together as a family.”

And when not working, that includes “hang[ing] out sometimes with the kids, but also by ourselves,” the actress continues, adding: “I always find it super inspiring. A friend was telling me, ‘It's the same life whether you laugh or cry.’ And it's nice to have a friend where you can laugh and cry... and feel always safe.”

Without Blood marks the Maria star’s first follow-up collaboration with Hayek Pinault after the two starred in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe installment Eternals.

"I was surprised, even though we are very close and stuff, but I was [surprised by] how warm and generous and kind she was as a director to the actors," Hayek Pinault said at the PEOPLE/Entertainment Weekly suite in Toronto. “I felt like she was my motherly figure because she would come to the set and run it like a family. She was a very efficient mother, but she was also there emotionally every step of the way.” She added at the time, "I've worked with great directors that are really focused, but maybe because she's also an actress. Everything that maybe she wished somebody would've done for her, she did for us."

Also starring Juan Minujín, Without Blood will be distributed by Fremantle and is awaiting a theatrical release following its world premiere. The Toronto International Film Festival runs through Sept. 15.

Angelina Jolie arrived at the Venice Film Festival and enchanted it. Thanks also to the new light acquired by her blonde turn, achieved in a year and a half with the help of her trusted hairdresser, Massimo Serini, with a salon in Rome, but who flies around the world to reach her when Angelina calls him.

“Before the carpets, or if she has to go to private parties, we meet to get her ready but as you can see she doesn’t like social media and for professional reasons I never wanted to post that I was her hairstylist, except for work covers like those shot for Vogue or for brands like Guerlain,” he told us over the phone the day after the premiere of Maria at the Palazzo del Cinema in Venice, where Angelina Jolie was moved by the standing ovation and the prolonged applause at the end of the screening.

"The day before walking the red carpet I studied the color with her to make it even brighter for the spotlights. Arriving from Los Angeles, it took a couple of hours of work to create the balayage in honey tones that lightens on the lengths to become very light. I created a golden look, with shaded ends to match the hair with the dress she was wearing by Tamara Ralph created in collaboration with her brand Atelier Jolie".

"We focused on a monochromatic look, Angelina wanted the color to enhance everything else, wearing a nude dress it should not have too warm undertones. I added brighter and lighter shades, to create a tone-on-tone effect and make the result more harmonious and without contrasts. For the hairstyle we created a fresh and natural look that was in line with the dress. So we focused on a clean, simple, sleek, tidy style and with just a hint of a wave in the front to rest gracefully on the faux fur. Angelina is a woman who always appears elegant and chic even with simple and not laborious looks".

How did you meet?
"It was three years ago, she was in Rome and was working as a director on the film Without Blood with Salma Hayek. She hadn't found anyone who could please her with her hair, and a friend called me telling me that there was an international star in town, but she said she couldn't reveal the name. She then called me at midnight to tell me who I would be dressing the next morning. I didn't sleep a wink. I was so nervous. When I met her she greeted me with a smile that disarmed me. And from that moment on I've always followed her. In June she called me for the Tony Awards, but unfortunately I had a broken finger and couldn't go. But we saw each other again in Venice."

How long did it take to get to this blonde?
"Almost a year and a half, meeting in secret locations, since she can't go to salons because she gets swarmed by fans and photographers. She started with a dark brown and for this reason we went slowly so as not to damage her hair, with the balayage we lightened the locks every 2 months and that's how we got to this result."

Whose idea was it to go blonde?
"Once she asked me to go a little lighter and I went easy on her, but then she said 'I really want to be blonde.'" I think she wanted a change and blonde gives her eyes a beautiful light. Our collaboration is made of continuous dialogue, we decide together. She tells me 'what do you think, what do we do.'" She respects other people's work a lot. She asks questions and wants things explained to her."

What advice did he give her to maintain her color?
"When she's in Los Angeles she does treatments with hydrating bains that keep her color shiny and silky. I recommended the Blond Absolu line by Kérastase."

She also has fun with her haircuts…
«Usually she has a layered cut and now that she has grown it out we have managed to get a long bob. She has only cut it shorter once, but she is crazy about long hair and I must say with her tall and slender physique, the softer the hair is the more it works for a question of proportions between the volume of the shoulders, neck and shape of the face».

Do you have a funny or unforgettable memory of your meetings with Angelina Jolie?
«Well, once in New York by mistake while we were together she had put her bag on a table where there was also a candle, and I moved the candle and it fell and I saw black smoke coming from the bag: I had burned the handle. She told me “Massimo, stay calm“. She is a very warm and kind person. Even after the screening of Maria in Venice, after a stressful day, we hugged, I complimented her and she hugged me very affectionately, she said “thank you for everything”. Like anyone else, she is also stressed before a red carpet. She is a wonderful person, reserved, generous, easy to work with, she is decisive and knows exactly what she wants, she is competent in everything and has an unimaginable refinement».

What was the best moment you experienced thanks to Angelina Jolie?
"When she took me with her to Mexico in Akumal, to a Bee School, for a project for the empowerment of women in sustainable beekeeping. It was the best gift of life, her humanitarian work allowed me to understand how much we do not realize what there is in the world beyond what we live."

It's funny to have a "World Premiere" after they've already had several red carpet "gala screenings" which were premieres in every sense but name.   They then have to head back to Europe for the opening of the Locarno Film Festival on Aug. 3.  It seems reversing the order might have made more logistical sense but this is apparently what fit in with Brad's preferred schedule.  Paris and Rome in mid July, hanging out in Europe until the end of July before heading back to L.A. --- or also Angelina's Without Blood and Spelman send off for incoming Freshman students.

Trivia: Regency Village Theater used to be known as Mann Village Theater -- where Mr. and Mrs. (as Brad referred to it in conversation with David Leitch in a Paris video store) premiered 17 years ago.
