Q: Who do you think would win in battle, Thena or Maleficent?

A: "I think they'd get along really well. The thing is Thena likes to fight. I'm not sure Maleficent does. Maleficent is looking for peace.  Thena's just completely...Or maybe they both are.   God, like I'm in therapy now.  Which one am I?  And what makes them similar is probably the answer to my psychological make-up.  Yeah, Impossible, impossible to think about.  I'd like the fans to tell me actually. You always want to hear from the fans on what they'd like to see.
Or who they'd like to see us come in contact with in the MCU now that we're in it.  I'm very curious who they want us to. I think Kingo and Thena haven't had enough play.  Because we were saying one of us is very physical, one is very verbal, one of us is an extrovert, one of us is a bit of an introvert.  We're kind of perfect opposites."
K:  I think we would make a really good pairing.  And I'm so glad you said that to Kevin at the after party for the premiere. You were like 'What about the two of us?'
A:  "Yeah, we'd be so good."
Q:  I couldn't agree more
A;  "We're pushing."

Q: Would you ever return to that character (Maleficent)?

A: "I love playing Maleficent.  She's like my alter-ego."
K:  I've seen Sleeping Beauty so many hundreds of times, over and over and over and really was in love with Maleficent.
A: "I didn't ruin her for you."
K:  No! It was great seeing another side.  I'm such a fan of that character so I was thrilled.  We actually went to, I don't know if you remember this, when Maleficent 2 premiered in London while we were shooting, and Emily and I went to see it.  
A:  "I love that.  So if there's another one you're gonna have to, somehow we're gonna have to play."
K:  Yeah!


Her answers lend credence to the earlier report that Disney is actively developing Maleficent 3.  The site's other scoop that Angelina "signed a massive contract with Marvel" was an exaggeration of a standard agreement for talent to be available for future films that Salma Hayek also signed.  As to the 2nd part of the story, "that studio head Kevin Feige wants her to have a solo film as well," she has already said she is not interested in a solo film without her eternals family.  Kumail would be a great addition to M3.  He opens up a lot of possibilities for both the plot and tone of the story.  Hopefully this time with a competent director.

Maleficent: 5 MCU Villains She Can Defeat (& 5 She Couldn't)

Disney owning the MCU practically makes Maleficent, one of the company's most iconic characters, into a bonafide supervillain. While she was terrifying to children that grew up watching Sleeping Beauty, the new live action Disney films starring Angelina Jolie have made her something of an antihero. For all her internal conflict, she still retains her her immense magical powers, which are only augmented by her temper. The films have augmented her abilities beyond what they were in the animated film, including new forms of transformation, elemental manipulation, and dominion over the natural realm.
In the time between Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the MCU has grown with a multitude of different supervillains, from Hela the Goddess of Death, to Thanos the Mad Titan. Some would be able to smite the sorceress with one cosmic blast, but those that are merely "superhuman" would find themselves no match for her abilities. Here are the five MCU villains she can defeat and five she couldn't.


10 COULD DEFEAT: LOKI
Loki has some incredible skills with magic, but he often needs a lot of time to prep. As he's depicted in the MCU, the only power he demonstrated with great gusto was the ability to manipulate and subjugate weaker minds. We know he can transform himself into all manner of forms, but so far in the films he's in he's depicted as a trickster and little else.
All Maleficent would have to do, even if she didn't have her staff, is turn him into an ant and step on him. Where she beats Loki is with the immediacy that her magic takes form. If he somehow defended himself against an attack with his own shapeshifting or an astral projection of himself, she'd turn into a giant dragon and roast him.

9 COULDN'T DEFEAT: THANOS
The Mad Titan Thanos has been responsible for the destruction of dozens of worlds, and has maimed countless superheroes in his pursuit of intergalactic devastation. In his mind, the loss of half a planet's population is not something to be mourned, but to be memorialized as an act of compassion.
Maleficent has also twisted her own ideologies to justify her endeavors, but that is where her similarities to Thanos end. To begin with, Thanos is a God-like entity, able to project and repel vast amounts of cosmic energy. Nothing in Maleficent's arsenal of abilities could protect her from, or counteract, such an ability.

8 COULD DEFEAT: ULTRON
Ultron began as a construction of Tony Stark's in the MCU, designed as a defense system that soon decided humans didn't need defending from anyone but themselves. It's then that he went on the offensive attack, and Maleficent could have brought him down.
One of Ultron's greatest strengths is his greatest weakness. The internal molecular re-arranger that helps him make the Adamantium components of his workings more malleable, i.e. allows him to change shape, renders him a metal paperweight if Maleficent destroyed it.

7 COULDN'T DEFEAT: HELA
While Maleficent may be the ruler of a sizable domain, she has nothing on Hela, Goddess of Death. Hela is a goddess of Asgard, and rules two of its nine realms; Hel, known as the land of the dead, and Niffleheim, known as the land of eternal ice.
Like Thor and Loki, she possesses incredible strength, resilience, speed, and healing powers. She is also responsible for the souls of the Asgardian fallen, and can raise armies of the dead at will. She can kill with a touch, as well as restore life once taken. Her cloak grants her the Hand of Glory, which can render flesh from even the thickest Asgardian hide, and allow her to teleport.

6 COULD DEFEAT: RED SKULL
Red Skull may be a brilliant tactician, but he's also a megalomaniac, and his greatest weakness is his quest for power. While skilled in hand to hand combat, the Skull was often bested by Captain America, and even when he managed to transfer his essence into other bodies (in the comics), he was soundly defeated again.
Because he's a human, without any superhuman enhancement, Maleficent could easily manipulate him through hypnosis or telekinesis. If that didn't work, a simple transformation would do, into something completely nonthreatening and benign, like a tiny yappy dog.

5 COULDN'T DEFEAT: EGO
Though he may look harmless in his human form, Ego is an ancient being with all the cosmic powers of an entire planet at his disposal. He traveled the breadth of space, mating with a variety of species to produce offspring carrying his genetic material and continue his expansion.
Because Ego wants to become the only life in existence, not even Maleficent could stand in his way. He can reorganize matter itself as well as organic life, so her powers over the natural world would be rendered useless, especially if they now contained his seedlings.

4 COULD DEFEAT: RONAN
For such imposing physicality, Ronan the Accuser was always just an acolyte. An underling of Thanos, he was nevertheless a hero to the Kree people. The Kree physiology is unique in that it makes Kree warriors stronger and faster than humans, with Ronan's armor providing amplification.
While it took a considerable amount of energy from the Power Stone to reduce Ronan to a pile of dust, if the Guardians of the Galaxy could do it, so could Maleficent. Ronan is powerful physically, but most of his might comes from his hammer, which she could easily remove.

3 COULDN'T DEFEAT: DORMAMMU
Dormammu is one of the most powerful entities in the MCU, and like Thanos and Ego, is nearly indestructible. He has powers and abilities that surpass other supervillains, both in their devastating effects and their numeration. Plus, he is pure concentrated malevolence.
Maleficent, for all her sorcery, couldn't protect against the projection of cosmic energy, life force absorption, control of the elements, time travel, the ability to teleport, and the ability to create an inter-dimensional portal and throw her through it.

2 COULD DEFEAT: KILLMONGER
Though not as powerful as Black Panther, Killmonger still benefits from imbibing a sacred, powerful herb that grants him enhanced physical abilities. This still only makes him "slightly less powerful than superhuman", which is to say grants him peak performance.
Maleficent would doubtless be able to manipulate him with hypnosis or telepathy, as well as throw him through walls, or bind him with elemental magic. As a dragon she could roast him alive, or turn him into a bug crawling on the backside of a water buffalo grazing at a water hole in Wakanda.

1 COULDN'T DEFEAT: KAECILIUS
While no match for the Sorcerer Supreme, Kaecilius was still able to overpower The Ancient One. His power over Eldritch Magic is second to none, and he is able to defeat several Masters of the Mystic Arts single-handedly. Even at her peak, combating The Zealot's abilities would most likely drain her to depletion.
Like Doctor Strange's Eye of Agamotto, Kaecilius has a Sling Ring that allows him to transport through dimensions and time itself. When he taps into the Dark Dimension of Dormammu, he acquires the ability to manipulate space. Even when battling Strange amidst reconstructing environments, he gained the upper hand, forcing the Sorcerer Supreme to strike a deal with Dormammu.

Hey, Did You Know That Peter Capaldi Was (Not Quite) In Maleficent?


Angelina Jolie-starring Disney blockbuster Maleficent had an impressive cas of mostly British actors, which included Kenneth Cranham, Sam Riley, Janet McTeer, Imelda Staunton and An Adventure in Space and Time‘s Lesley Manville.

But no Doctors. Or was there?
It was recently revealed by Peter Capaldi that he had in fact been cast in the film (“I did quite a lot of green screen acting in the blockbuster movie Maleficent – from which I was cut!” he said at the Deep Breath premiere Q&A), and recorded scenes as King Kinloch, the ruler of the fairies.
So what went wrong?
Well, it seems that in an all-too-common move in cinema production in the USA, the reaction of test screening audiences resulted in all of Capaldi’s scenes being dropped or reshot with reattributed dialogue. The reason? Apparently the fairy court was considered too dull. Perhaps there was some feeling that the film was closer to The West Wing than Sleeping Beauty; perhaps the test screening people were dullards. Either way, we lost Capaldi from the hit movie, which is a big shame.

Says Diaval actor Sam Riley, “I remember on one of the first days, Peter Capaldi and I were chatting and he was starting to have his makeup put on. Then I went off and four hours later this goblin — or a man with a proper goblin’s head, moving and everything with little hairs in his ears — comes over to me and just carries on the conversation. I was like, ‘Is that you, Peter, under there?'”

But don’t think that Capaldi was somehow annoyed by the makeup. It seemes that he loved it, enthusing at the 2013 BAFTA TV awards: “I have nothing but nice things to say about this movie. The guy who directing Malificent is the production designer on Avatar [Robert Stromberg]. So you can imagine the scale. It has a very magical, dark look and a lot of the film’s characters — Imelda Staunton’s, for example — are computer generated. There’s only a handful of us who are real.

“And Angelina was absolutely lovely. They had Angelina on wires. She’d come flying in from way over there and land at your feet. It’s a big Disney movie with lots of special effects and incredible costumes and make-up. It was great. It was a big, magical, terrific moving story. I’m dying to see it.”
Further research shows that John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr Banks) was brought on board late in production to assist with reshoots. Whether this had a bearing or relation to the changes that were made are unclear, but it seems likely.

Perhaps we’ll one day see a version of Maleficent as originally intended, a director’s cut along the lines of Peter Jackson’s DVD releases of Lord of the Rings. Wouldn’t it be great to see the twelfth Doctor Who star as the Fairy King, alongside Miranda Richardson as Queen Ulla?

Disney Passes $4B In Global Box Office Led By Marvel Heroes, Fairy Tale Femmes

The Walt Disney Studios on Friday reached a new milestone, passing $4B at the global box office for the second time in its history. The first time was just last year, but that was on November 26, meaning Disney bested its speed to $4B by 12 days this year. The new tally of roughly $4.05B joins other 2014 records which include the studio getting to $2B internationally, on August 4, and $3B globally, on August 5, faster than any other year prior.

Disney’s box office in 2014 has been largely driven by four major titles, two of them hailing from the hit machine that is Marvel, and two firmly rooted in fairy tales — and with female protagonists to boot. Tops is Guardians Of The Galaxy. With $330M, it is the No. 1 film of the year domestically, and its global cume of $770.1M makes it the the No. 2 film worldwide. It recently hit its last markets including China where it topped out at about $96.5M. Also from Marvel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier had a fantastic tour of duty this spring with $259.8M domestically, making it the No. 2 film of the year. Its $714.7M worldwide gives it the No. 5 slot globally.

Angelina Jolie-starrer Maleficent holds the No. 2 spot internationally in 2014 with $516.8M. It’s the No. 3 film globally having conjured up $758M during its run which began in May. The juggernaut holdover that was Frozen earned $733M of its total $1.27B during this calendar year. Elsa & Co notably iced the competition in Japan where the movie made a staggering $249M and stayed at the top of the chart for 16 weeks — until Maleficent came in to steal the crown in July, that is.

In more recent news, Disney’s Big Hero 6 started rolling out internationally at the end of October and has now earned $148.M globally. It continues bowing through February and is the 85th title in the studio’s history to cross $100M (see my international box office report for more). Next up on Disney’s roster is the feature adaptation of Into The Woods starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine. It releases domestically on December 25 and rolls out elsewhere from there.

Before Angelina Jolie reinvented her as a misunderstood soul, Maleficent was best known as the wicked fairy godmother that crashes Princess Aurora’s christening in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty.
But the character did not always have the imperious and regal look she has in the 1959 film and the re-telling released earlier this year. In fact, animators at Walt Disney Studios had initially envisioned her as ugly and hag-like. It was animator Marc Davis who gave us the scarily elegant Maleficent we know today: It’s all about those suggestive-of-the-devil horns.
Yahoo Movies has an early version of the Maleficent’s uninvited entrance into King Stefan’s castle (above). Part of the bonus features from the forthcoming Diamond Edition Blu-ray combo pack of Sleeping Beauty, the clip uses original sketches of the classic villainess. Note the red, flowing vampire-like frock with what appear to be bats flying around her, and an unsightly, angular face with big droopy eyes.
And it’s not only the look of Maleficent that went through an evolution. Comparing this clip with the actual scene from the movie (below), you will also find that the early version starts out quite differently: Maleficent is shown to have more earthly qualities, lacking the ability to magically appear in the middle of the king’s court as she does in the finished film. Instead, she walks up to the castle and demands to a guard, “Announce me!”
The Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack is available on Oct. 7 and includes more never-before-seen extras like this one. Yes, a bunch of behind-the-scenes fussing went into making this Disney fairy tale classic.

Love it or hate it, Disney’s gritty “Sleeping Beauty” retread “Maleficent” was a monster hit for the studio, earning $240 million domestic, and raking in an impressive $750 million worldwide, which currently places it second in 2014 total box office, right behind “Transformers: How Do These Movies Keep Making More Money Than The GDP Of The Entire Continent of Africa”? And to keep the train rolling, "Maleficent" will hit Blu-ray, DVD and VOD on November 4, and Disney’s rolling out some of the special features early, as five deleted scenes were recently posted on the interwebs.
Most of the scenes are brief and consist of Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) bickering with her manservant Diaval (Sam Riley). An unfinished CGI crow effect at the end of one of these sequences is sure to satisfy fans of the craptastic cult favorite “Birdemic”. The longest scene, depicting Stefan (Sharlto Copley) lusting after the king’s crown, lacks the trademark Copley overacting. For that, you might want to check out his baffling batshit crazy performance in Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” remake, which is begging to become the next midnight movie craze.
