Over the past 21 months, Marvel has used its trademark post-credits scenes to tease as many as six — or more! — upcoming movies. They are:

• A sequel — or sequels! — to “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” that involves the titular hero (Simu Liu), the extraterrestrial origins of his titular rings and/or the remaking of the titular outlaw cabal the Ten Rings by Shang-Chi’s sister Xialing (Meng’er Zhang).

• A sequel to “Eternals” that involves Starfox (Harry Styles) aiding Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan) and Thena (Angelina Jolie) to rescue their compatriots from judgement by the Celestial Arishem.

• A sequel to “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” that involves Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) partnering with the sorcerer Clea (Charlize Theron) to repair an incursion within the Dark Dimension.

• A sequel to “Thor: Love and Thunder” that involves Zeus (Russell Crowe) dispatching his son Hercules (Brett Goldstein) to kill Thor (Chris Hemsworth).

• A sequel to “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” that involves Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) contending with the revelation that the late T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) had a son and rightful heir to the kingdom of Wakanda.

• And now, a sequel — or sequels! — to “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” that involves the newly reassembled titular Guardians and/or the exploits of Star-Lord after returning to his family on Earth.

None of these prospective feature films have been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios, nor have there been any solid reports of forward creative momentum for any of them. Nonetheless, Marvel has never been a studio to make an idle promise. Why go to all the trouble of secretly hiring Styles, Theron and Goldstein for only a 90-second cameo? For that matter, why foreshadow the mystery of Shang-Chi’s rings, or the potential of T’Challa’s noble lineage, if you’re never going to pay it off? Why end “Guardians Vol. 3” with the tag line “the Legendary Star-Lord will return” if, you know, he won’t?

Maleficent: 5 MCU Villains She Can Defeat (& 5 She Couldn't)

Kayleena Pierce-Bohen
Jan 16, 2020

Disney owning the MCU practically makes Maleficent, one of the company's most iconic characters, into a bonafide supervillain. While she was terrifying to children that grew up watching Sleeping Beauty, the new live action Disney films starring Angelina Jolie have made her something of an antihero. For all her internal conflict, she still retains her her immense magical powers, which are only augmented by her temper. The films have augmented her abilities beyond what they were in the animated film, including new forms of transformation, elemental manipulation, and dominion over the natural realm.
In the time between Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evilthe MCU has grown with a multitude of different supervillains, from Hela the Goddess of Death, to Thanos the Mad Titan. Some would be able to smite the sorceress with one cosmic blast, but those that are merely "superhuman" would find themselves no match for her abilities. Here are the five MCU villains she can defeat and five she couldn't.

10 COULD DEFEAT: LOKI
Loki has some incredible skills with magic, but he often needs a lot of time to prep. As he's depicted in the MCU, the only power he demonstrated with great gusto was the ability to manipulate and subjugate weaker minds. We know he can transform himself into all manner of forms, but so far in the films he's in he's depicted as a trickster and little else.
All Maleficent would have to do, even if she didn't have her staff, is turn him into an ant and step on him. Where she beats Loki is with the immediacy that her magic takes form. If he somehow defended himself against an attack with his own shapeshifting or an astral projection of himself, she'd turn into a giant dragon and roast him.

9 COULDN'T DEFEAT: THANOS
The Mad Titan Thanos has been responsible for the destruction of dozens of worlds, and has maimed countless superheroes in his pursuit of intergalactic devastation. In his mind, the loss of half a planet's population is not something to be mourned, but to be memorialized as an act of compassion.
Maleficent has also twisted her own ideologies to justify her endeavors, but that is where her similarities to Thanos end. To begin with, Thanos is a God-like entity, able to project and repel vast amounts of cosmic energy. Nothing in Maleficent's arsenal of abilities could protect her from, or counteract, such an ability.

8 COULD DEFEAT: ULTRON
Ultron began as a construction of Tony Stark's in the MCU, designed as a defense system that soon decided humans didn't need defending from anyone but themselves. It's then that he went on the offensive attack, and Maleficent could have brought him down.
One of Ultron's greatest strengths is his greatest weakness. The internal molecular re-arranger that helps him make the Adamantium components of his workings more malleable, i.e. allows him to change shape, renders him a metal paperweight if Maleficent destroyed it.

7 COULDN'T DEFEAT: HELA
While Maleficent may be the ruler of a sizable domain, she has nothing on Hela, Goddess of Death. Hela is a goddess of Asgard, and rules two of its nine realms; Hel, known as the land of the dead, and Niffleheim, known as the land of eternal ice.
Like Thor and Loki, she possesses incredible strength, resilience, speed, and healing powers. She is also responsible for the souls of the Asgardian fallen, and can raise armies of the dead at will. She can kill with a touch, as well as restore life once taken. Her cloak grants her the Hand of Glory, which can render flesh from even the thickest Asgardian hide, and allow her to teleport.

6 COULD DEFEAT: RED SKULL
Red Skull may be a brilliant tactician, but he's also a megalomaniac, and his greatest weakness is his quest for power. While skilled in hand to hand combat, the Skull was often bested by Captain America, and even when he managed to transfer his essence into other bodies (in the comics), he was soundly defeated again.
Because he's a human, without any superhuman enhancement, Maleficent could easily manipulate him through hypnosis or telekinesis. If that didn't work, a simple transformation would do, into something completely nonthreatening and benign, like a tiny yappy dog.

5 COULDN'T DEFEAT: EGO
Though he may look harmless in his human form, Ego is an ancient being with all the cosmic powers of an entire planet at his disposal. He traveled the breadth of space, mating with a variety of species to produce offspring carrying his genetic material and continue his expansion.
Because Ego wants to become the only life in existence, not even Maleficent could stand in his way. He can reorganize matter itself as well as organic life, so her powers over the natural world would be rendered useless, especially if they now contained his seedlings.

4 COULD DEFEAT: RONAN
For such imposing physicality, Ronan the Accuser was always just an acolyte. An underling of Thanos, he was nevertheless a hero to the Kree people. The Kree physiology is unique in that it makes Kree warriors stronger and faster than humans, with Ronan's armor providing amplification.
While it took a considerable amount of energy from the Power Stone to reduce Ronan to a pile of dust, if the Guardians of the Galaxy could do it, so could Maleficent. Ronan is powerful physically, but most of his might comes from his hammer, which she could easily remove.

3 COULDN'T DEFEAT: DORMAMMU
Dormammu is one of the most powerful entities in the MCU, and like Thanos and Ego, is nearly indestructible. He has powers and abilities that surpass other supervillains, both in their devastating effects and their numeration. Plus, he is pure concentrated malevolence.
Maleficent, for all her sorcery, couldn't protect against the projection of cosmic energy, life force absorption, control of the elements, time travel, the ability to teleport, and the ability to create an inter-dimensional portal and throw her through it.

2 COULD DEFEAT: KILLMONGER
Though not as powerful as Black Panther, Killmonger still benefits from imbibing a sacred, powerful herb that grants him enhanced physical abilities. This still only makes him "slightly less powerful than superhuman", which is to say grants him peak performance.
Maleficent would doubtless be able to manipulate him with hypnosis or telepathy, as well as throw him through walls, or bind him with elemental magic. As a dragon she could roast him alive, or turn him into a bug crawling on the backside of a water buffalo grazing at a water hole in Wakanda.

1 COULDN'T DEFEAT: KAECILIUS
While no match for the Sorcerer Supreme, Kaecilius was still able to overpower The Ancient One. His power over Eldritch Magic is second to none, and he is able to defeat several Masters of the Mystic Arts single-handedly. Even at her peak, combating The Zealot's abilities would most likely drain her to depletion.
Like Doctor Strange's Eye of Agamotto, Kaecilius has a Sling Ring that allows him to transport through dimensions and time itself. When he taps into the Dark Dimension of Dormammu, he acquires the ability to manipulate space. Even when battling Strange amidst reconstructing environments, he gained the upper hand, forcing the Sorcerer Supreme to strike a deal with Dormammu.

Kevin Feige, Marvel chief creative officer and the architect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is sharing his first public comments about the Scorsese debate in a wide-ranging conversation with The Hollywood Reporter awards columnist Scott Feinberg on the latest episode of the Awards Chatter podcast.
"I think that's not true. I think it's unfortunate," Feige says when asked about the notion that superhero movies are a negative for cinema. "I think myself and everyone who works on these movies loves cinema, loves movies, loves going to the movies, loves to watch a communal experience in a movie theater full of people."
While audiences have flocked to those films, Scorsese has argued they have no real stakes. "What's not there is revelation, mystery or genuine emotional danger," Scorsese wrote in his Times piece. "Nothing is at risk. The pictures are made to satisfy a specific set of demands, and they are designed as variations on a finite number of themes."
But Feige has long maintained that Marvel Studios seeks to make different types of films, and over the years has touted 2015's Ant-Man as a heist film and 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a political thriller. In response to Scorsese, Feige brings up more recent examples of the risks the studio has taken, noting that Marvel hasn't made an Iron Man film since 2013 and instead pitted Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark against Chris Evans' Captain America in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.
...
Feige also points to Angelina Jolie's The Eternals, currently being shot in the Canary Islands by filmmaker Chloe Zhao and starring characters that few outside of Marvel die-hards have heard of.
"It is a very big movie. It is a very expensive movie. And we are making it because we believe in [Zhao's] vision and we believe in what those characters can do and we believe we need to continue to grow and evolve and change and push our genre forward," says Feige. "That's a risk if I've ever heard one."

Eternals

Thena

You don’t have to wait a whole year to see Angelina Jolie join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Fresh off the Hall H announcement on Saturday that Jolie is joining the MCU in Phase 4 movie The Eternals, the actress stopped by EW’s Comic-Con 2019 portrait studio with her new costars.
“I’m so excited to be here,” Jolie said during Marvel’s panel. “I’m going to work 10 times harder because I think what it means to be a part of the MCU, what it means to be an Eternal, to be a part of this family, I know what we all need to do. We have all read the script. We have all know what the task ahead is and we are all going to be working very, very hard. I’m training. I am thrilled. Thank you so much.”
The Eternals, directed by The Rider’s Chloe Zhao, will star Jolie as Thena, along with Richard Madden (Icarus), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lia McHugh (Sprite), and Don Lee (Gilgamesh).
“It’s about this group of incredible immortals, but through their journey, we really get to explore what it means to be human and humanity on our time on this planet,” Zhao said.
“The Eternals are a race of immortal aliens sent to Earth by the Celestials to protect humankind from the Deviants,” added Madden. Ridloff also signed that she is playing the first deaf character in the MCU.
The film, which is shooting in London, is set for release on Nov. 6, 2020.
The Eternals are some of Marvel Comics’ most powerful and mysterious figures. They’re the brainchild of Marvel legend Jack Kirby, who left the publisher in the ’70s to move to DC Comics before returning a few years later. Upon his return to Marvel, Kirby created The Eternals, which followed a group of genetically-engineered gorgeous super-humans blessed with long life. As Kirby wrote it, the Eternals were created by the Celestials, a group of all-powerful giant space gods who designed the Eternals to help defend humanity. (Remember Kurt Russell’s all-powerful Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? He’s a Celestial.)
Unfortunately, the Celestials also created an evil race known as the Deviants, and the Eternals and the Deviants have clashed ever since.
Up until now, the MCU has largely taken place in the 20th and 21st centuries, but Feige has previously said since The Eternals focuses on a group of ancient, everlasting beings, the film will span eons in their lives.

Thena

in Eternals Annual (1977) #1 “The Defender”. Often squaring off with Ikaris for the role of leader, Thena is a second generation Eternal who is always on a righteous mission. Impervious in her armor, she can project heat rays and can teleport.

March 28, 2019 10:56am PT by Richard Newby

The Oscar winner is taking on her first superhero movie, which suggests there must be more than meets the eye to the Marvel Studios project.

One of Marvel Studios' most mysterious projects is starting to take shape, and with it comes one of the biggest names in Hollywood. Wednesday it was revealed that Angelina Jolie is in talks to join Chloe Zhao's The Eternals.

While details on the film have been locked up tighter than Odin's vault, The Eternals, based on the epic saga by comic book legend Jack Kirby, focuses on immortal superpowered beings created by the Celestials, the cosmic giants seen in the Infinity Stones sequence in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Zhao's film is said to be led by Sersi and Ikaris, two Eternals whose love story rests at the center of an eons-spanning conflict.

Marvel had no comment on who Jolie might play, but given that she's the first actor to be cast, it seems likely that she's up for the transmutation-powered Sersi. Jolie also looks a great deal like many artists' depiction of the character. But who is Sersi? And what does Jolie's casting tell us about the film?

Unlike the previous films that have made up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Eternals is based around largely unknown entities, even for most comic book readers. This unknown quality plus the fact that Marvel Comics hasn't made much effort in reprinting Kirby's series or key appearances of the characters (yet), adds a level of excitement and novelty to Zhao's feature. As a property that's more situated in the realm of sci-fi and fantasy than superhero yarns, learning about the Eternals is akin to taking a deep-dive into J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth history or George R.R. Martin's Westeros and Essos. While the Guardians of the Galaxy were mostly unknown to most audiences before 2014, the Eternals are even more of a deep-dive into the Marvel Universe. When it comes to the Celestials, the Eternals and their evil counterparts the Deviants (Thanos' race), this is heavy Marvel mythology, the building blocks of the universe, and far more complex than anything we've seen Marvel Studios adapt thus far.

Casting Jolie in a film such as this is a way for Marvel to ground the audience in a complicated mythology with a familiar face. But it's also a signal that if an actress on this level of influence, one who has largely focused on directing and producing of late, is interested, then it must be something special.

Marvel Studios, with a few exceptions, has long played the game of star-making when it comes to leading roles, taking talented actors and actresses known from television and award-season breakouts and making them household names or reviving the public's perception of them. There's been a certain tier of actors who first broke box office records and sold magazine covers in the '90s — Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Jolie — who have somehow managed to avoid being in a superhero film. But it now seems as though everyone must do at least one. Despite being a favorite for numerous superhero roles since the '90s and being an early rumored choice to direct Captain Marvel, Jolie has stayed away from superhero movies. Sure, she played Lara Croft twice and starred in the comic adaptation of Wanted (2008), which stripped away the superhero element of Mark Millar's comic, and she went all-in on the costumed villainess in Maleficent (2014) and its upcoming sequel. But she's never played a true superhero before.

Yet Sersi, if speculation is indeed correct, seems like a fitting choice for Jolie. Not only does the role provide her with the opportunity to work with Zhao, whose film The Rider (2017) makes the filmmakers seem like kindred spirits, but Sersi reflects many of Jolie's own acting choices and interests.

Created by Jack Kirby, Sersi first appeared in Strange Tales No. 109 (1963), with the name spelled "Circe," then later as Sersi in The Eternals No. 3 (1976). The distinction in spelling highlights a very important aspect of The Eternals' comic book history. While Greek gods and goddesses exist in the Marvel Universe, they would often let the Olympia-based Eternals represent their physical forms for the humans on Earth, hence many of the Eternals sharing names similar to their Greek counterparts. This distinction sounds like something the MCU will merge and just make the Eternals the inspiration for the Greek Pantheon, like the Asgardians were the basis for the Norse Gods. The comics have already done some of this synthesizing. Sersi inspired the poet Homer, who included her under the name Circe in The Odyssey in which she turned men into swine. Because of her powers to manipulate matter and rearrange molecular structures, she was often seen as a witch rather than a result of alien experimentation, allowing her to move across comic book genres.

While most of the Eternals eventually returned to the cosmos in search of their larger destiny, Sersi remained on Earth, fascinated with its people and customs. She involved herself in key moments in history, lived in ancient Rome and Camelot, fought alongside Thor and the Vikings in the god's youth and later joined the Avengers.

Having lived for millennia, Sersi has taken on many roles on Earth and has changed her personality as she's seen fit, taking the most out of her immortal existence. This worldliness and interest in alleviating human conflict and suffering falls in line with Jolie's own humanitarian and conservation efforts. As the line between actors and the superheroes they play grows increasingly thin (see Chris Evans' political interests, and Gal Gadot and Brie Larson's movement for women in film), Sersi may be a way for Jolie to get her message out to a wider audience, and exhibit godlike powers while doing it.

It's impossible to capture the massive potential and mythology of The Eternals through one character and casting choice. But Jolie's involvement at least gives us a better idea of what's coming down the road post-Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has promised a very different MCU after April 26, and if Jolie's casting and Sersi's eons-spanning history and mythology is any indication, Marvel's storytelling and casting is only growing in ambition.

Jolie is doing superheroes.
Angelina Jolie is getting ready to make her first foray into the world of superhero movies.
The Oscar-winning actress is in talks to star in Marvel Studios' The Eternalsa superhero team adventure feature being directed by Chloe Zhao.
Jolie has chosen the Marvel project based on the Jack Kirby-created title about super-powered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants that were created by the cosmic beings called Celestials.
While details about the movie are being kept under wraps, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans. It is unclear who Jolie will play. Marvel had no comment.
Zhao, an award-winning indie director behind critical hits The Rider and Songs My Brothers Taught Me, will direct from a script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.
Jolie is currently working with Marvel's parent company Disney on the upcoming Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which was recently moved up to fall 2019 release from spring 2020, and on the animation/live-action hybrid The One and Only Ivan, which she is also producing. Jolie's upcoming projects also include Come Away, a fantasy drama from from Brenda Chapman.
She is repped by UTA and Sloane Offer.

Marvel is expanding the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for their post-“Avengers: Endgame” Phase 4 and in doing so has scored a huge casting coup: Angelina Jolie is in talks to star in Marvel’s “Eternals.”
Critically-acclaimed indie filmmaker Chloe Zhao, known for “The Rider” and “Songs My Brothers Taught Me” is directing the picture based on a script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.
The Eternals are a powerful race of near-immortals and space gods created by the cosmic beings known as the Celestials. Eternals have existed for millions of years and their advanced biology gives them incredible strength, long lives, and powers that set them far above mortal men. There’s also a wicked offshoot known as the Deviants also created by the Celestials. THR, who breaks the news says, while plot details are under wraps, “one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.”
Right now, it’s unclear who Jolie will play and Marvel’s not commenting.
No other details have been released, but Marvel’s Kevin Feige likened “The Eternals” to the “Guardians Of The Galaxy” in terms of a new fully-formed team earlier this year. “We like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first ‘Avengers,’” he told Collider in February. “More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”
Clearly, the group will fit closer into the non-Earth-bound cosmic side of the MCU which includes ‘Guardians’ and “Captain Marvel” so far.
“The Eternals” is not dated but expected to shoot later this year for a 2020 release. All will likely be revealed at Comic-Con this summer. Zhao will have to find some time to promote “Nomadland,” a Focus Features film starring Frances McDormand she shot in secret in 2018, coming out later this year and expected to hit the fall film festival circuit. The news of Jolie joining the cast means more announcements can’t be far behind and perhaps the full team could be rolled out by San Diego.

Director Chloe Zhao is a critics' darling.  Her The Rider was voted Best Film of the Year for 2018 by the National Society of Film Critics (beating Green Book, A Star is Born, etc.) Zhao's involvement may be a big factor in Angelina's decision to consider The Eternals.  If The Eternals starts production later this year, she will only have a short break after Those Who Wish Me Dead which is already in pre-production for an expected May start.
