Top Ten Box Office Takeaways
by Tom Brueggemann

The weaker the new films, the better the holds
Not all the results were weak. Five of the Top Ten holdovers dropped less than 50%, four under 35%. "Maleficent" -- the word of mouth release of the summer, dropped only 27%.

...In other box office news, Angelina Jolie's Maleficent ... has now made $630.1 million worldwide. You better believe Disney is going to try and figure out a way to franchise this bad boy, let's just hope they make a better movie this time around.

Studio Weekend Estimates

This weekend marks the first time Maleficent' out-grossed both Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful on boxofficemojo's side-by-side domestic box office comparison.  Its indicative of the film's strong holding power which you can clearly see in the table below.  No other film in wide release declined less than 40% week-to-week.

......Holding up far better this weekend was Disney's Maleficent, which was down just 36 percent to round out this weekend's top five with an estimated $8.24 million. In the process the 3D fantasy blockbuster starring Angelina Jolie surpassed the $200 million domestic milestone this weekend. Maleficent has grossed $201.87 million in 31 days and is very likely to continue holding up well going forward.

Among holdovers, Disney's Maleficent and Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 both crossed the $200 million threshold. Maleficent's showing is especially impressive, considering it isn't a sequel. Disney also celebrated the fact that Captain America: The Winter Soldier passed up The Lego Movie over the weekend to become the top grossing film of the year domestically with $257.2 million.
... Paramount's Transformers: Age of Extinction debuted to $100 million in North America, the best number of the year to date. Overseas, it was even more massive in its initial assault, taking in $201.3 million for a worldwide bow of $301.3 million.
.... In terms of 2014 summer tentpoles, Godzilla opened to $93.2 million, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 earned $91.6 million and X-Men: Days of Future Past, $90.8 million. Opening weekend numbers don't portend how well a film will hang on (Days of Future Past is the biggest earner to date of the three, with more than $710 million in global ticket sales).

6th UPDATE, SATURDAY, 10:38 PM:

Disney’s Maleficent continues to play in the Top Five and is joining Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in crossing $200M this weekend, casting a $3.35M spell on Saturday, $8.4M from Friday to Sunday. That’s five movies so far this year that have passed the $200M domestic mark — three this summer (with X-Men: Days of Future Past). The other two are The Lego Movie which debuted in February and Captain America: The Winter Soldier which came out during Spring Break in April. Godzilla opened to over $90M this year but has yet to cross the $200M mark. After this weekend, it’ll be sitting at almost $197M. Thinking that Warner Bros. will do all it can to drag the lizard over the finish line, but it’ll be really close.

Saturday is down anywhere between 20% and 24% from Friday, which is a bigger than expected drop and puts Transformers: Age of Extinction back to right around $100M or a little under. Either way, Transformers will be the biggest opening of 2014 to date. Saturday is now expected to be around a $31.8M to $33M haul, which places it around $98.6M to $100M at the moment. Just finished figuring out the math with different percentages drops on Sunday, and that is the range as it looks like tonight. The opening will beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s $95M earlier this year.

In the No. 2 spot is Sony’s 22 Jump Street which is on track for a $6M Saturday and a $15M three-day gross to push its cume to $139.4M — which is already past the lifetime gross of the first installment. No. 3 is Fox/DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 with a $5.1M Saturday estimate. The animated family pic will bring in another $12.7M  in its third weekend of release for a total cume of $121.4M.

Will Warner Bros. being able to drag Legendary Pic’s Big Lizard across $200M? Godzilla will have a total cume of $196.9M after pulling in another $800K this weekend. Meanwhile, TriStar’s Heaven is For Real profitable pic from filmmaker Randall Wallace will pass $90M. Well done, Mr. Wallace.

SATURDAY 10:30 PM, 4TH UPDATE: I don’t blame Michael Bay or Paramount for making unnecessary fourquels. I do blame you for paying to see this hot mess. Bay’s all too familiar visual and aural formula of crashes and explosions interspersed with barely there dialogue between robots and humans (and now dinobots) caused Paramount’s Transformers: Age Of Extinction to open to $99.5M-$100M domestic this first weekend and to a worldwide cume after Saturday totalling $154.6M. Through Sunday, the global total should climb to $300M. So there’s a fivequel planned. (Long sigh…)

Bay knows his audience and gives them what they want: the same action and plot over and over and over and over again, ad nauseam.  Which is why Bay pocketed $60M from Paramount for just one of his Transformers installments not long ago. Now he and the studio can boast the biggest opening day of 2014 - $41.6M Friday for #1. Saturday fell -20% for $33M with an ‘A-’ Cinemascore helping word of mouth, and Sunday should drop -25%. Paramount all day Friday was cautioning me to expect only mid to high $90sM – but that stopped by Saturday midday. Playing in 4,233 U.S. and Canadian theaters this first weekend, TF4 should exceed what the last Transformers 3 did ($97.8M). So how did Paramount sell this fourquel? By turning the marketing campaign to full throttle just like Bay did. (See below.)

At a longer than average 165 minutes playing time (prompting one of my Twitter followers to snark, "Citizen Kane is 119 min. Is there any good reason for Transformers 4 to clock in at 165 min?"), Transformers 4 can’t get in as many 2D and 3D and IMAX screenings daily. But by opening before July 4th, as opposed to Independence Week last time, it should play to a better multiple. This pic intro-ed a new human cast - starring opposite old and new autobots and dinos – featuring the boring Mark Wahlberg (instead of bad-boy Shia LaBoeuf who’s been discarded by Bay and seemingly everybody else in Hollywood), Nicola Peltz (who plays Wahlberg’s "hot" 17-year-old daughter in Bay-dictated Daisy Dukes and too much bronzer), Kelsey Grammer, and Stanley Tucci. Wahlberg and TF4 producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura have made 6 movies together. Cost of the movie is $210M, according to my sources. For that price you get eye fatigue and hearing loss. The money certainly wasn’t spent on human words which are sparing and downright stupid in Ehren Kruger’s screenplay and overshadowed by Optimus Prime’s predictable and often painful "wisdom". Spare us next time.

Produced by Don Murphy & Tom DeSanto, Di Bonaventura and Ian Bryce, and once again fueled by and fueling Hasbro’s Transformers Action Figures, the pic opened to $8.7M from 2,990 Thursday late shows beginning at 9 PM. That’s less than the last installment’s late show take ($13.5M from Transformers: Dark Of The Moon) so the wannasee became wait-and-see. But see they did. Exit polling showed the film’s audience was overwhelmingly male because that’s how Bay conceives these male wet dreams: 64% to 36%, and 42% under age 25 while 58% age 25 and over.

In addition this 4th installment in the multi-billion dollar Transformer franchise started the weekend with $80M internationally after adding $52M on Friday in 36 markets.

The Friday international result was 42% above Dark Of The Moon which opened to $161M in similar markets in 2011.Early estimates for China were that Age Of Extenction grossed just over $30M on opening day Friday. This would represent a record for the largest opening day for a foreign film in China. Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures announced, "We especially want to thank China Film Group, China Movie Channel, Jiaflix, M1905, China Movie Media and Shanghai Hua Hua. We are incredibly grateful to all of our Chinese partners who made this fantastic result possible." (A significant part of the movie takes place there. Fanboys and reviewers complained about the "very obvious placement" of Chinese products.)

Going into Friday TF4 opened to $30M overseas for a worldwide total of $38.7M – placing #1 in all 22 early-releasing territories. Key highlights included Russia with a massive $4.5M opening day, second biggest of all time and largest opening day of 2014 and +52% above Transformers 3 date is $9.1M. Australia brought in $1.8M for a $4.6M total. Taiwan grossed $1.5M on Friday, the biggest of 2014 for $4.1M. And the biggest Friday result of all-time was scored in  Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand.

The first theatrical 2D teaser trailer debuted March 7th with 300: Rise of An Empire, then played with Need For Speed, Divergent, Noah, The Other Woman and Neighbors.  An IMAX version played with the IMAX releases of Captain America: Winter Soldier and Amazing Spider-Man 2.  A new 3D trailer launched  May 23rd.  A family-specific trailer debuted on May 30 with Maleficent. Paramount tells me TF4′s in-theater print campaign marked the studio’s most varied ever, geared to give audiences "a deeper look" at the new movie characters. Unprecedented number of exclusive on-screen spots featuring Mark Wahlberg played from mid-May to mid-July on 20,000 movie screens.  Large-scale promotions with top national and regional circuits included integrations from social media, home page takeovers and dedicated fan outreach. One million collectors’ Transformers RealD 3D glasses were given away to first fans seeing the film.

Unlike other Hollywood studios, Paramount embraced the World Cup and TF4 had a multilayered campaign tying into it and big ad buys during key games across ESPN and Univision. A spot with Optimus Prime and soccer stars was created for global use.

Spots ran during the premiere of TNT’s Last Ship from executive producer  Michael Bay as well as on Comedy Central/Spike where a car in a shopping mall parking lot was rigged so that TJ Miller could make the vehicle talk like a Transformer to shoppers.

Online, TF4 launched a Superbowl spot in early February introducing the dinobots which became the  #1 movie spot coming out of the game in terms of social mentions online. Paramount even later let fans request Optimus Prime to pick them up for a ride via popular Uber app. The first-of-its-kind partnership for a movie reached 50M social impressions. Also Optimus was reading fan tweets. Video gamers were snagged with Global Xbox takeovers and a first of its kind “Grimmlock Pet” for users to feature as their avatar. Additionally, to capitalize on the huge audience that plays Minecraft, influencers recreated their best TF4 inspired structure in partnership with Maker Studios.

The Transformers: Age of Extinction worldwide junket and premiere was held june 18-20 in Hong Kong, a city featured prominently in the movie.   On the red carpet, a Giant Optimus Statue stood against the city skyline and a performance by the film’s "Battle Cry" song band Imagine Dragons (who announced a contest supported by U.S. radio and online promotions to attend the screening). The film also premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival closing night and in Beijing. The movie’s U.S. premiere was held at Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City on June 25, and the global tour continues on with premieres in Berlin, Rio, and Tokyo through the end of July.<

Paramount sent the cast on its most extensive early talent tour to date since Wahlberg et al had to be introduced to the press. The studio also executed a massive $175M promotional push from corporate brand partners around the world including GM Chevrolet and Oreo Cookies, Big Red soda, Valero gas stations and Western Star trucks.

2. Sony’s 22 Jump Street (Week 3 – 3,426 theaters) had a good FSS hold of -46% in spite of Transformers 4 accounting for 57% of overall moviegoing this weekend. The Channing Tatum-Jonah Hill comedy earned $5.0M Friday and $6.0M Saturday for a $15M weekend. Through Sunday the cume should be $139.4M.
3. DreamWorks Animation/Fox’s How To Train Your Dragon 2 (Week 3 – 3,750 theaters) also held well with no kiddie competition. It made $4.1M Friday and $5.1M Saturday for a $12.7M weekend (-49%) and what’s expected to be a $121.4M cume.
4. Screen Gems/Sony’s Think Like A Man 2 (Week 2 – 2,225 theaters) did not get the hold that the studio expected or wanted. It did only $3.4M Friday and $4.1M Saturday for a big -66% drop from a week ago and just a $10.2M weekend and $48.0M cume.
5. Disney’s Maleficent (Week 5 – 3,073 theaters) added $2.5M Friday and $3.3M Saturday for an $8.2M weekend and $201.8M cume, joining both X-Men 2 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 in the $200M domestic club this summer.
6. Warner Bros’ Jersey Boys (Week 2 – 2,905 theaters) from Clint Eastwood sank to #6 with only $2.2M Friday and $3.1M Saturday for a $7.4M weekend (-82%) and a mere $27.1M cume. Toast.

FINAL UPDATE, MONDAY, 1:11 PM: It’s the morning after and the harsh reality has set in. 22 Jump Street came in below $60M at $57M (still pretty darn good) while How to Train Your Dragon 2 tallied $49.5M when dust cleared this morning. What happened? Father’s Day, good weather, NBA Finals, and Stanley Cup finals in the top two TV markets (take your pick) all suppressed Sunday moviegoing a bit. 22 Jump Street mid-week numbers will be interesting to watch as there is a great possibility that it’s already been there-done that with its core fans, but this weekend only sees the opening of the older demo Jersey Boys from Clint Eastwood and the Kevin Hart-Tim Story re-teaming with Think Like A Man 2.
Dragon 2, although it  didn’t open to higher numbers as expected, still is well-executed and the distribution date was well chosen. Expect it to keep playing straight through to mid-July when Planes: Fire & Rescue bows from Disney as families will be looking to it and to Maleficent until then. (Earth to Echo comes out in between). Edge of Tomorrow edged out Fox’s The Fault in Our Stars this weekend as the latter took a bad tumble, down 69% in its second weekend. Edge is actually holding fairly steady (-43%) but this is a big-budget bummer for Warner Bros. at the domestic box office.

3. "Maleficent" (Buena Vista) Week 3 - Last weekend #2
$19,008,000 (-45%) in 3,623 theaters (-325); PSA: $3,623; Cumulative: $163,525,000

Still holding well, with a surprise #3 slot this weekend. The even better story is worldwide, which combined with the domestic total is now approaching $500 million.

What comes next: This looks like it could approach $250 million domestic and reach over $600 total, very strong.....

Disney's Maleficent continued to hold up relatively well this weekend with an estimated third place take of $19.01 million. The 3D fantasy blockbuster starring Angelina Jolie was down 45 percent from last weekend, which represented a very solid hold when considering the new direct competition the film faced from How to Train Your Dragon 2. Maleficent has grossed a strong $163.52 million through 17 days of release. That places Maleficent 34 percent ahead of the $122.06 million 17-day gross of 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman. With the debuts of both The Fault in Our Stars and How to Train Your Dragon 2 now out of the way, Maleficent has a strong chance of beginning to hold up even better than it already has going forward.

Angelina Jolie’s showing her gams are still looking strong. Her “Maleficent” movie was not only the highest debut of her career thus far it just keeps going and going only dropping 43% in its third week at the box-office. The movie has earned a spectacular $436 million worldwide in only 3 weeks in theaters, $163m of that domestic and the movie shows little signs of slowing down. $500 million globally will be easy and its just a question of it can chug along to $600 and considering it hasn’t opened in China or Japan yet that seems more than feesable. No doubt a sequel is about to be announced any minute now. The movie has already outgrossed the worldwide total of "Snow White & The Huntsman" which comparatively took 14 weekends to hit just shy of $400 million world wide).

5TH UPDATE, SUNDAY AM:  If you’re sick of summer sequels, then this weekend stunk for you. But the public isn’t, so this was another great weekend in terms of grosses for the top pair of newcomers.  #1 is  22 Jump Street (Sony/Columbia Pictures/MGM – 3,306 theaters) opening with a hot $25M (including $5.5M from Thursday late shows) Friday. West Coast late shows did push that total higher. But Saturday cooled down -26%. The Channing Tatum-Jonah Hill laugher has a real shot at $60M, or at least $10M to $15M more than expected. Not bad for a cost the studios claim is only $50M. That would make this the 2nd biggest R-rated comedy ever, behind only Hangover 2 (which sucked, as you know). This film tested higher than any R-rated comedy in Sony Pictures’ history – although testing is notoriously wrong. But not only did critics approve of this pic by giving it 83% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, but so did audiences who gave it an A- Cinemascore to keep the word-of-mouth strong. (21 Jump Street received only a B.) Exit polling showed the movie playing to 50% male and 50% female, with  56% of the audience under age 25, and 44% aged 25 and over. Keeping the interest high were returning directors Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs).
This weekend, the film bowed in 15 markets are made $6.9M for an international cume of $20.6M. Last weekend the film took in $12M from the UK for one of the top comedy openings of all time.
The marketing challenge was to rope in a broad dual moviegoing audience so Sony capitalized early with set visits in November and the first trailers in December. Key television premieres, finales & awards shows were secured along with the NHL Stanley Cup Finals and the NBA playoffs where a blown-out custom promotion featured Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill & Ice Cube interviewing legendary NBA duos about working as partners.  There also were custom promotions on MTV, Adult Swim, and Comedy Central, where a partnership with @Midnight saw the entire show devoted to the film. The Social Media campaign was pushed hard: Rentrak’s social score (social conversation, most notably Twitter) rated at 100 index. A multi-pronged viral video campaign tapped into the YouTube generation.  One of the standouts among the digital initiatives was the creation of the fictitious Metro City State College. In addition to New York, London, and Dublin  publicity junkets and LA premiere, Jonah and Channing served as Grand Marshals at NASCAR’s Pocono 400.  The pair did appearance on Entertainment Weekly, GQ, GMA, Kelly and Michael, Tonight, BET, Kimmel, Conan, and Chelsea.
#2 is PG-rated and 3D How To Train Your Dragon 2 howtotrainyourdragon2(DreamWorks Animation/Fox- 4,253 theaters) targeting $18.5M Friday but -9% on Saturday. With a 3x multiple (on the high end for summer) that’s a tepid $50M. The cost was a whopping $145M to make. After an uneven string of misses and miserable grosses recently culminating in the bomb that was Mr Peabody And Sherman, this sequel should have been Jeffrey Katzenberg’s biggest toon opening since 2012′s Madagascar 3. (The first Dragon opened to $43.7M and was considered one of DWA’s quality films.) But DreamWorks Animation is still nowhere near its Shrek highs. Audiences gave the sequel an A Cinemascore which will help word-of-mouth. Produced by Bonnie Arnold and written/directed by Dean DeBlois, based upon the “How To Train Your Dragon” book series by Cressida Cowell, the toon casts Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, and Djimon Hounsou among others, This second chapter of the trilogy returns to the fantasty world of the heroic Viking Hiccup and his faithful dragon Toothless against the power-hungry Drago. Parents beware, however: there’s a death scene in the film that’s been compared to the punch-in-the-gut of Bambi’s. Lacking serious animated competition, this title (which has a high 92% on Rotten Tomatoes) could play for awhile.
Internationally, DWA/Fox began its box office quest on 4,438 screens in 25 markets including Russia this weekend, earning $24.8M and taking the #1 market share position in every opening market. The International cume-to-date is $26.5M. All of Latin America releases next weekend along with Australia, most of Eastern Europe and South Africa.  Western Europe starts to roll-out the weekend the first weekend in July. Middle Eastern markets opened last weekend.
For overall moviegoing, this weekend is pushing $190M with 57% of the grosses in the Top 2. That’s about even with last year’s big FSS:
3. Maleficent (Disney – 3,623 Runs) Week 3 PG
Friday $6.1M, Saturday $7.4M, Weekend $19.6M (-43%), Cume $164.1M
4. The Fault In Our Stars (Fox – 3,273 Runs) Week 2 PG13
Friday $6.5M, Saturday $5.5M, Weekend $16M (-67%), Cume $82.0M
5. Edge Of Tomorrow (Warner Bros – 3,505 Runs) Week 2 PG13
Friday $4.7M, Saturday $5.9M, Weekend $15.0M (-48%), Cume $55.5M

deadline
In the No. 3 position is Maleficent from Disney which held its own despite a new family-friendly entry coming into the marketplace. It was up about 21% Saturday to grab an estimated $7.15M and is on track to take in around $19M to $20M for the weekend; its total cume after three weeks is around $164M.
