WIW12 Wrap Up

Women in the World Summit gathers heavy hitters like Angelina Jolie, Chelsea Clinton to honor activists

Young women are looking beyond Snooki and Kim Kardashian at the real world - and solving its problems

Angelina Jolie at the Women in the World Summit.

Here's hope.

Young women are looking beyond Snooki and Kim Kardashian and their own shoe closets out at the real world and its problems — and solving them. That was the high-energy conclusion of the Women in the World Summit at Lincoln Center Saturday, organized by Newsweek/Daily Beast Editor-in-Chief Tina Brown with a list of guests she alone could gather.

From Angelina Jolie, who opened the three-day event, to U.S. Secretary of State Clinton, who closed, 2,000 attendees met speakers like International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Israeli opposition leader Tsipi Livni, Meryl Streep, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Madeleine Albright, Gael Garcia Bernal, Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga, Diane von Furstenberg, Christy (Every Mother Counts) Turlington, Chelsea Clinton, Jenna and Barbara Bush (Global Health Corps) and their cousin, Lauren Bush Lauren (FEED). But it was the courage of women and girl activists from all over the world who blew even these top leaders and philanthropists away.

Women such as Zin Mar Aung, jailed in solitary confinement in Burma for 11 years just for carrying political flyers about Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi — then, the minute she got out, she started organizing again. And Suma, who was sold in Nepal by her parents at 6 into indentured servitude for six years until an organization called Room to Read helped liberated her. Now, she helps liberate the 20,000 other girls who remain enslaved.

Or Dalia Ziada, who like other Egyptian women walked first into Tahrir Square in front of the men because they thought soldiers wouldn’t touch them — only to be blocked by men from winning office now. She told the room, "There is no spring without flowers; there is no Arab spring without women."

And other activists fighting forced marriage in Pakistan and India, sex slavery in Mexico and even the right to drive in Saudi Arabia. Six months ago, Brown set up the Women in the World Foundation to connect and fund nonprofits helping girls and women around the globe. "What's exciting about this event is that these women come here and get energized by the freedoms that we have here," said Brown, who became a U.S. citizen in 2005. "I think that by showing these women that we care about them, that we support them, either financially or with time, it fortifies them in their struggle."

What these girls are doing could energize a nation. Look at 17-year-old Talia Leman, who is linking companies with kids to raise money for their favorite causes, after raising $10 million for Katrina relief at her website RandomKid.com.

Jessica Matthews and fellow 23-year-old Julia Silverman invented Soccett, a soccer ball which, when kicked, recharges a battery inside to provide two hours of electricity for use in Third World places where there is none.

Lauren Bush Lauren sells bags at her FEED nonprofit that each feed two children in Kenya for a year. Columbia student Julie Zeilinger, 18, raises feminist consciousness on her blog at thefbomb.org. And anti-bullying activist Emily-Anne Rigal, 18, was praised by Lady Gaga for her WeStopHate.org site.

There's Chelsea Clinton, who has helped stop the passage of the HIV virus to newborns in partnership with Mothers2Mothers.org. And another First Daughter, Barbara Bush, whose Global Health Corps sends volunteers to clinics around the world based on the Teach for America model. "Our friends don't care what Kim Kardashian tweets," Jenna Bush, who co-founded Global Health Partners with her sister Barbara, told the Daily News.

"It's a choice," brilliant comedian Tracey Ullman told The News. "You can watch reality shows, or not. I mean, have fun. I heard all the women over there at the charity boutique shopping and saying, 'Aren’t these African bracelets gorgeous?' We love to shop. As Diane von Furstenberg said yesterday, 'Girls will be girls.' Have fun. But then get serious."

Loop 21 Covers Women in the World Summit 2012

By Keli Goff
Angelina Jolie, Actress, Director & Goodwill Ambassador, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
Loop 21: If there was one piece of advice you could give to everyone here on what they can do to make the world a better place for women, what would it be?
Angelina Jolie: To listen to the women, because the women have a very strong voice and a very clear voice and women, like the women that were speaking tonight—not myself—but the women who were speaking about their personal experiences…If you listen to them…if you listen to the women in the communities…if you talk to the grandmothers, the teachers, and the daughters…they’ll tell you what they need. They’ll tell you what their children need. They’ll tell you what their communities need and if you listen and do what they ask, the world would be a much better place.

Angelina Jolie, Hillary Clinton and More Women in the World

From Nancy Pelosi's chastising Limbaugh to Meryl Streep’s tribute to Hillary Clinton to the Secretary of State herself, watch the best moments from the Women in the World summit.

Angelina Jolie Takes the Stage
Cue the standing ovation: the Hollywood star turned U.N. ambassador read the account of Dr. Hawa Abdi, a 2011 Women in the World delegate who was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Abdi has housed thousands of displaced people in her clinic in Somalia since 1983.

Christine Lagarde: If Lehman Brothers Had Been ‘Lehman Sisters’
Maybe she was kidding, maybe she wasn’t. Responding to Niall Ferguson’s question about whether there would have been a financial crisis had more women been in senior positions, Christine Lagarde got the laugh of the first night when she (jokingly?) said “Lehman Sisters” might have avoided default.

Madeleine Albright on Shattering the Glass Ceiling

There’s only one reason there are so few women in power, according to Madeleine Albright: “Men,” she said in one of Thursday evening’s lighter moments.

Nancy Pelosi: Limbaugh Should Be ‘Advertiseless’
What happens now that the talk-radio host is shedding advertisers for his comments over reproductive rights? In the wake of Sandra Fluke’s showdown, the first female majority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives said women shouldn’t have to continue to fight for reproductive rights in this day and age.

Meryl Streep Hails Hillary Clinton
She’s won Oscars and played world leaders, but now she can cross hugging the Secretary of State off her list. Meryl Streep paid tribute to Clinton, praising the Secretary for her tireless work on behalf of women. Bonus: Streep’s latest Oscar hardware made a cameo.

Hillary Clinton: Women Should Be Able to Make Their Own Choices
Why do extremists—in every country—want to control women? The Secretary of State said the U.S. needs to live its own values because “America needs to set an example for the entire world.” Watch Clinton’s rousing call for change.

The Tiger Mother’s Guide to Life
Firebrand Amy Chua has one piece of advice for Chinese parents—and if you’ve read Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, it might come as a surprise. The controversial author told the audience that she encourages Asian parents to let their children have sleepovers.

Taking on extremists both abroad and at home who would marginalize women, the secretary of State called for an “audacious” fight at the Women in the World Summit. By Eleanor Clift
“So how do you like my jacket?” Hillary Clinton asked, as she did a star turn on the stage to show off her green, white, and black jacket with sparkles threaded throughout. It was probably the least likely opening line for Clinton, who is known more for her policy prowess than for any kind of fashion displays. But Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep had just introduced her, and Streep had twirled around to reveal the back of her red jacket, which was decorated with what looked like pink bow ties.
“I cannot believe what just happened,” Clinton exclaimed, saying she had no idea what Streep would do by way of introduction. Anticipating perhaps a reprise of the actress’s various roles, Clinton pronounced herself relieved that Streep hadn’t made “The Devil Wears Pantsuits,” a reference to Clinton’s tribute to the pantsuits that got her through the presidential race.
Acknowledging that her friends are right when they say she needs more sleep, Clinton stressed that for her what she does is “not so much work as a mission.” She talked about the various brave women she has met over the last 20 years, and when her energy flags, she thinks of all the obstacles they face. She spoke of the relationships she built with women in China, in Belarus, in Ireland, and in Pakistan, and asked, “What does it mean to be a woman in the world?”
“It means never giving up,” she said. “It means getting up, working hard and putting a country, or a community on your back.” She noted how “exquisitely appropriate” she found the picture on the front page of The New York Times that morning of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and IMF managing director Christine Lagarde. “I know both of them, and I think they are worthy of our gratitude and admiration because, boy, do they have hard jobs. Chancellor Merkel is carrying Europe on her shoulders trying to navigate through this economic crisis,” she said.

She is certainly used to causing commotion wherever she goes.
So while it looked like a scene of chaos as Angelina Jolie made her way to the airport today, the star probably didn’t bat an eyelid.
She was swarmed by a throng of fans and photographers as she stepped into an SUV after checking out of her hotel in New York City.

The 36-year-old was joined by son Pax as the pair got ready to fly to New Orleans to meet up with the rest of their brood.
Mischievous Pax, eight, put on a display for the cameras as he showed off a large purple teddy bear, much to the amusement of his mother.
Angelina’s beau Brad Pitt, 48, is currently in New Orleans evaluating progress in his quest to build 150 storm resistant affordable family homes in the Lower Ninth Ward, which was left devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2008.

Angelina Jolie: giving back to others makes for a happier life

Speaking at the Women in the World summit in New York, the actress said that women around the globe had inspired her to be a better person and to give back.

9:13AM GMT 09 Mar 2012
Angelina Jolie, Diane von Furstenberg and Debra Messing were just some of the stars who attended the Women in the World summit in New York to highlight issues that affect women around the globe.
On the red carpet before the event Jolie said helping others is what life it about.
"I think what are we in this world if we can't give back to others - it's a happier life. I had a wonderful mother I learned a lot about women through her, I have great daughters who teach me a lot about the strength of women and little girls. And I've meet amazing people around the world who have inspired me and taught me to be better," Jolie said.
Magazine editor Tina Brown founded the summit in 2010 after being inspired by Vital Voices, an organization that works with female leaders in business, politics and human rights.
"We started small and it just grew in its own organic way because the women we brought to tell their stories were so incredibly moving and powerful and inspiring that the people who attended kept saying 'how do we get to know more,'" said Brown, whose mission is to help women and girls succeed through experience and problem solving.
Actress Debra Messing, said she was very aware of the work that still needs to be done for women all around the world.
"I have the same concerns and worries about my family, about my child and the education he is going to get, about my ability to keep him safe and the privileges that my nieces will get - that she gets everything that my son gets," Messing said.
The summit will runs until March 10 and will include an appearance by actress Meryl Streep.

Angelina Jolie is uber glam at Women In The World Symposium

By Eleanor Young  on Friday 9 March 2012

After all the Oscars furore over her now famous right leg, Angelina Jolie clearly decided it was time to cover up as she attended the prestigious Women In The World Symposium in New York yesterday.

The actress swapped her flesh-baring dress for a more demure ensemble, showing off her super-slim frame in slim black trousers, peep-toe heels and sleek white tux jacket, not forgetting a sexy siren lip.

She was attending the 3rd Annual Women In The World Summit. It's a three day event bringing together female leaders and activists from around the world to discuss obstacles facing women everywhere.
Angelina discussed her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which is set during the Bosnian War.

Diane Von Fustenberg also attended and praised the women being honoured at the awards: "A lot of them have overcome huge misery and huge, horrible things. Anot not only do they overcome it for themselves, but then they turn it into something positive to help others."
This is the first big public event Angelina has attended since The Oscars when her leg became the most talked about thing ever in the history of awards dos. Okay, maybe it wasn't quite that talked about, but you get the gist.
She's rumoured to be signed up to star in the upcoming Disney film, Maleficent, playing the title character - the evil Queen in the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. We hope the reports are true because then we'll be able to make lots of jokes about her leg looking maleficent: "What a maleficent leg you have there, Ange" etc.

Angelina Jolie strikes first post-Oscar pose

By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY

All eyes were on Angelina Jolie's legs last night as she attended the Women in the World Summit 2012 in New York, hosted by Newsweek and The Daily Beast.
But she didn't strike quite the same pose as her now-famous Oscar one. And the talk was all about the plight of women refugees around the world, not legs or poses.
"What are we in this world if we can't be of use to others in some way?" she told The Telegraph on the red carpet.
Meanwhile, Jolie will begin shooting Disney's Maleficent in June.

Angelina Jolie Directorial Debut Tears & Raves-Sarajevo

By Ambassador Muhamed Sacirbey – Follow @MuhamedSacirbey

“In the Land of Blood and Honey” was premiered in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina. Deceived tolerance, lost peace and betrayed love is the script that was played out in real life in this cosmopolitan capital and country featured in Ms. Jolie’s film. She described herself as “terrified” in whether the citizens who almost 2 decades earlier suffered through siege, ethnic cleansing and genocide – the betrayal by neighbors and democracies – would embrace her portrayal of their victimization and resistance in her film.

They embraced it by most comments offered. However, I think that many citizens of this town with the deepest roots of multiculturalism and co-existence themselves finally felt relieved that they were not stereotyped into religious groups or citizens all gone mad in "age old hatreds". The rationalization for standing aside offered by most western capitals in terms as “religious war” and “bloodletting” was felt as much of a betrayal as the original onslaught. In many ways, the film also can provide some perspective: if it could happen in Sarajevo then why not in my home.

Ms. Jolie responded to charges by some Serb ultranationalists that the film was unbalanced: She replied: “The war was not balanced. It was not 50-50. Balance did not exist. Some did not want to see. Some did not want to be reminded. Some still continue to deny” the crimes/genocide committed. (From BBC)

The film might have been expected to make Muslim religious leaders uncomfortable as well as it starts with a seemingly idealistic love affair between a Muslim young woman and a young Serb man. It ends with violation of both the love and woman. The Highest Religious leader of Bosnian Muslims, Reis-Ulema Ef. Ceric (Bottom Photo) sat through the brutality, the perhaps sexually uncomfortable scenes and offered his review:
“…film is hard and brutal, just as was the aggression on our country. In a few moments I had shortness of breath watching some scenes. I would watch it again. It is difficult to watch, especially for those who were in Sarajevo '92., '93., '94.. I want to commend Angelina Jolie and congratulate her, I'd love to get other directors around the world look up to her. Her tears last night in Zetra (Sports-hall turned theater for overflowing crowd) rocked all of us who were in the hall. Jolie has revealed why she deserves a place of UN ambassador and I have the urge to tell her a big thank you personally. (She) had the courage and knowledge, to present some positive and some negative, shocks and compelled us to think deeply about the meaning of life, the need to engage everyone in the fight against violence and genocide." (From SarajevoX).

Think we should also see all of these statements as a further endorsement for artistic freedom, open society and continued efforts to overcome the divisions of Bosnia/Herzegovina that continue to be exploited by those who still nourish their economic and political accounts with the fruits borne by genocide and intolerance. Angelina Jolie deserves more than just a thank you for courage in presenting history but for speaking an uncomfortable truth and giving promise to open societies - to prevail because the challenge posed by freedom brings out the best in artists, citizens and leaders.

EXCLUSIVE: Angelina Jolie on criticism from Serbia

‘I want to visit Belgrade, but only when I feel welcome’

When the biggest Hollywood star actress does her directorial debut, then the film and its storyline become the hottest issue of virtually the entire world of film. Angelina Jolie has restored the Balkan wars of the 1990s to the centre of global media’s attention, with conflicting reactions to the project. In an exclusive interview for Blic, Angelina speaks out on the claims In the Land of Blood and Honey is one-sided, showing a warped perception of historical events.

- I am saddened by the fact some people are spreading lies about the film, said Angelina. – There will always be a minority who are loud, but there are a lot of people who are supporting it.

Now that your directorial debut has hit the cinemas, what is your prevailing impression? Has the effort paid off?

- I was touched by many extremely emotional reactions of the people who have seen it. This is a hard film to watch, but that is exactly as it should be. War should never be something easy to watch and witness, whether it’s in real life or on film.

I think people have shown understanding and compassion for both sides of this conflict, just like with any other conflict. More than anything else, they have understood my frustration with the fact the international community failed to intervene earlier, which is a very important message of this film.

Why did you choose the war in the Balkans as the topic? Do you feel any special bond with the people here? I am asking you this because I have read reactions which basically boiled down to something like: not even us fully understand what happened in the 1990s, so how could Angelina?

- I don’t want to pretend I understand that transpired, and that is not the intention of the film. This is no documentary. This is a film about relationships between people and what war does to people, how it changes them. Its backdrop is the war in Bosnia because this is a conflict I had come to realise I knew very little about, although it happened relatively recently.

I was a teenager growing up in the USA when the war was going on, without really being aware of it at all. That’s why I inquired about the war and felt the need to tell a story about it, turn people’s attention to the fact the international community allowed the war to go on for such a long time without any interventions.

People from the Balkans are very important to me. I have fallen in love with this country the first time I visited it, as well as its people and culture. People here are very sympathetic, loving and brave. They have survived so much and their optimism inspires me. There are a lot of their stories that deserve to be told.

Many have condemned the film without seeing it. What is their underlying motive, do you think?

- War is still a very touchy subject. It was a very painful time in the history of this country and it is our honour to have had many people open up for their artistic interpretation of the time they had gone through. I am aware that the people who went through the war will never be happy with a film on the war. Still, we were stunned by the lies told by some people who haven’t even seen the film.

There will be Serbian people who will say they have seen a number of Hollywood movies where Serbs are depicted as villains, just like Russians were usual suspects during the Cold War or the Arabs in the post-9/11 era. Is In the Land of Blood and Honey such a film?

- No, it’s not. If there’s someone that the film’s script lays the blame on, then it’s the international community which failed to react during the conflicts.
When you look at some reactions to the film, the matter is really depressing – you have two sides accusing each other for everything all over again.

Has the film been a failure in terms of contributing to the process of reconciliation?

- My experience with the people from the Balkans is that they are much more approachable, introspective and looking to the future than what some people would like to show. The process of healing and reconciliation is often complex and slow – it’s a tough job. But I believe this film has reached both sets of audiences and people have started communicating again, which is very important.

Will you be attending the Belgrade premiere? What do expect here?

- Originally the plan was to come to the Belgrade premiere, but due to the lies perpetuated by the media we now do not feel welcome. I would love to visit Belgrade in the future, but I will be keeping my finger on the Serbian people’s pulse.

Last Night in Sarajevo – In the Land of Blood and Honey

by Any Excuse to Wear Track Pants

My husband and I were fortunate enough to be invited to the premiere of In the Land of Blood and Honey in Sarajevo last night.  It was a huge honour to be a part of such a magnificent event.

In the Land of Blood and Honey VIP access
Some may wonder what the big deal is about going to a movie premiere; but this particular film, written and directed by Angelina Jolie, is one that delves deep into the core of the unspoken atrocities that occurred during the war in Bosnia.  It is something that hits very close to home, and anyone in the region can relate to it one way or another.
Listening to Angelina and cast speak about the message of the film at the press conference held yesterday late afternoon, I was moved by how much effort, research and compassion she had put into the whole project.  Watching her speak, I became more and more eager to see what the end result was.

Press Conference

Angelina Jolie Press Conference
Later on that evening, when we had arrived at the premiere, I was a bit overwhelmed by how many people had actually come to watch the screening of the film.  There were hoardes of people making their way on foot to the Olympic Stadium in Sarajevo for the viewing.  Total number was over six thousand.

Inside Olympic Stadium Sarajevo
Now with six thousand people I expected an incident or two, but to my surprise everyone there was on best behaviour, eagerly awaiting Angelina’s appearance.  When she walked out on stage to introduce the film she was met with a standing ovation, one that did not let her speak for a minute or two.  She was noticeably very moved.

Angelina Jolie addressing the crowd
She greeted the public and thanked them for coming.  She then warned them that the film would not be easy to watch, that it would bring up memories of what many had suffered, but at the same time remind them of what they had survived.  And then the film began.
I don’t want to go into too many details about the movie itself.  What I can say is that there was silence through the whole film, there were sounds of sniffles and gentle wiping of tears.  It was difficult to watch.  But at the same time, it was so incredibly moving, there was such a strong message being projected that I really believe it was impossible not to be touched or affected by it.  And even though, in this particular film, only the Serbs were shown to be the aggressors, I think that at the same time, Angelina did well to show the doubts that some of them had regarding their methods and ethics and their roles in the war itself.  Angelina made sure to show that not everyone was bad, an important point that often is ignored in these types of films.  In the Land of Blood and Honey has heart and courage and it goes a long way to show how tragic war can be, and how we cannot turn a blind eye to these sort of events, happening all over the world, anymore.
As the credits rolled, the applause grew and lured the entire cast and its director on stage for a final bow.  People were on their feet, clapping and cheering (a reaction, I have to admit, I was not expecting).  There was an atmosphere of gratitude there that night.  Angelina and some members of the cast were moved to tears.  It was a mutual moment of sadness and of thanks.    Both sides, the artists and their audience were sad that the story had to be told, and at the same time were thankful for it.

At the cocktail party afterwards, I had a chance to approach Angelina and briefly speak with her.  I thanked her for her incredible courage in undertaking such a demanding and sensitive project, and I expressed how much her efforts really meant to the people of the region.  I was brought to tears as I spoke to her (still probably on an emotional rush after watching the film) and at the same time I could see the tears welling in her eyes too.  I don’t remember much more from our encounter, but I’m pretty sure we hugged, and she was gracious enough to let me take a picture with her.
Her partner, for those who wonder, was also there that night but was tucked safely away until the end of the evening when he finally made an appearance and we were able to snap a few photos of him.

An incredible night and an incredible film.

ANGELINA Jolie broke down in tears after receiving a standing ovation at a screening of her new film yesterday.

The Hollywood star, 36, flew to the Bosnian city of Sarajevo for the premiere of In the Land of Blood And Honey – which she wrote and directed.
She was joined by proud partner Brad Pitt for the screening of the film - which focuses on a romance between a Serbian soldier and a Bosnian woman during the 1990s war in the region.
The mother-of-six was overcome with emotion after the screening as she was greeted by a rapturous standing ovation from the audience of 5,000 people – many of whom had lived through the war themselves.
As tears welled up in her eyes, she told the audience: "To see you receiving it so well means the world to me. I feel so deep for all of you in this country."

The Oscar-winner looked elegant in a flowing and demure black gown, with her hair styled into a simple up do for the event.
The United Nations Goodwill Ambassador also took the opportunity to address the ongoing unrest in Syria, insisting she hopes her film is seen as a "wake-up call" to the international community, as more needs to be done to help the country's people.
She added, "I feel very strongly about the film and I believe that its core issue - which is the need for intervention and need for the world to pay attention to atrocities when they are happening - is very, very timely, especially with things that are happening in Syria today.
"It is very important that this film is out at this time. If this film points the finger at anybody it is the international community, so I hope it remains a wake-up call for them."

In the Land of Blood and Honney).

- On i njegovi saradnici pokazali su veliko interesiranje.

Veza s ljudima

Uradili ste divan posao i veoma smo zahvalni zbog toga.
