Angelina Jolie, Diane von Furstenberg and Debra Messing were just some of the stars who attended the Women in the World summit in New York to highlight issues that affect women around the globe.
On the red carpet before the event Jolie said helping others is what life it about.
"I think what are we in this world if we can't give back to others - it's a happier life. I had a wonderful mother I learned a lot about women through her, I have great daughters who teach me a lot about the strength of women and little girls. And I've meet amazing people around the world who have inspired me and taught me to be better," Jolie said.
Magazine editor Tina Brown founded the summit in 2010 after being inspired by Vital Voices, an organization that works with female leaders in business, politics and human rights.
"We started small and it just grew in its own organic way because the women we brought to tell their stories were so incredibly moving and powerful and inspiring that the people who attended kept saying 'how do we get to know more,'" said Brown, whose mission is to help women and girls succeed through experience and problem solving.
Actress Debra Messing, said she was very aware of the work that still needs to be done for women all around the world.
"I have the same concerns and worries about my family, about my child and the education he is going to get, about my ability to keep him safe and the privileges that my nieces will get - that she gets everything that my son gets," Messing said.
The summit will runs until March 10 and will include an appearance by actress Meryl Streep.

Angelina Jolie is uber glam at Women In The World Symposium

By Eleanor Young  on Friday 9 March 2012

After all the Oscars furore over her now famous right leg, Angelina Jolie clearly decided it was time to cover up as she attended the prestigious Women In The World Symposium in New York yesterday.

The actress swapped her flesh-baring dress for a more demure ensemble, showing off her super-slim frame in slim black trousers, peep-toe heels and sleek white tux jacket, not forgetting a sexy siren lip.

NEWS FLASH: Angelina Jolie covers up her right leg (for about the seventh time since the Oscars)

Angelina 'The Leg' Jolie wore a swish trouser suit to attend the 3rd annual Women In The World Summit last night in New York

Angelina Jolie looked very smart in her monochrome trouser suit at a posh do in New York last night.
She'd obviously decided to keep 'the leg' under wraps after her amazing Oscars display. Want a reminder? Of course you do!

Angelina Jolie
Who's looking at her face? No one, that's who
She was attending the 3rd Annual Women In The World Summit. It's a three day event bringing together female leaders and activists from around the world to discuss obstacles facing women everywhere.
Angelina discussed her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which is set during the Bosnian War.

Quick Ange, it's trying to get away!

Diane Von Fustenberg also attended and praised the women being honoured at the awards: "A lot of them have overcome huge misery and huge, horrible things. Anot not only do they overcome it for themselves, but then they turn it into something positive to help others."
This is the first big public event Angelina has attended since The Oscars when her leg became the most talked about thing ever in the history of awards dos. Okay, maybe it wasn't quite that talked about, but you get the gist.
She's rumoured to be signed up to star in the upcoming Disney film, Maleficent, playing the title character - the evil Queen in the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. We hope the reports are true because then we'll be able to make lots of jokes about her leg looking maleficent: "What a maleficent leg you have there, Ange" etc.

Angelina Jolie strikes first post-Oscar pose

By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY

All eyes were on Angelina Jolie's legs last night as she attended the Women in the World Summit 2012 in New York, hosted by Newsweek and The Daily Beast.
But she didn't strike quite the same pose as her now-famous Oscar one. And the talk was all about the plight of women refugees around the world, not legs or poses.
"What are we in this world if we can't be of use to others in some way?" she told The Telegraph on the red carpet.
Meanwhile, Jolie will begin shooting Disney's Maleficent in June.

There's a time and a place for Angelina Jolie's right leg -- and Thursday night's 3rd Annual Women in the World event at Lincoln Center in Manhattan wasn't it.

The In the Land of Blood and Honey director and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, 36, kept covered up but was still radiant in a white blazer with gold clasp, loose chiffon top and black pants.

The stunning mother of six's hair was in the same lighter shade -- and Kate Middleton-esque waves -- she sported at the Oscars in L.A. nearly two weeks ago, where she inspired an enduring Internet meme after dramatically baring her right leg in a black velvet Atelier Versace gown with a thigh-high slit.
In her longtime role as UNHCR ambassador, the mother of six spoke passionately about the plight of Somali refugees.

And her efforts were applauded by one Rwandan genocide survivor, Sandra Uwiringiyimana, who personally thanked the superstar for "taking justice into her home and hands" and "doing incredible things."

Cue the standing ovation: the Hollywood star turned U.N. ambassador read the account of Dr. Hawa Abdi, a 2011 Women in the World delegate who was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Abdi has housed thousands of displaced people in her clinic in Somalia since 1983.
