After the lights dimmed, a reel showcasing examples of cinematography representing almost 100 years of film history — as well as some of this year's honorees and nominees — quickly set the mood for the room’s more than 1,500 attendees:
The show then started as ASC Awards Committee Chairman Don McCuaig, ASC introduced the evening's master of ceremonies, Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz:
The presentations kicked off with the ASC Board of Governors Award, given to actress-writer-producer-director Angelina Jolie — who was introduced by friend and collaborator Dean Semler, ASC.
At the podium, Semler embraces ASC Board of Governors honoree Angelina Jolie.
When Semler was honored with the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, Jolie personally presented the trophy to him at that year’s ceremony, so his intro for her this year was especially poignant, leading into Jolie’s eloquent and heartfelt acceptance speech:

“When we were doing First They Killed My Father, they had to shoot from the point of view of a six-year-old girl…” Of the high moments, she remembers of working with Deakins, “the first time you suggest a shot and he puts his hand on your shoulder and says ‘it’s a good idea’…I never heard from Roger, ‘Don’t worry I’ll fix it in post'”

“I think of the opportunities I’ve had a woman and I think of female artists before us, and the idea of a room of one’s own..and how the idea of being able to live as an independent artist was a bitter dream….so I am grateful that I’ve never been made to feel like a female director, but my job is to be a good director. I’m very excited there are more women making their mark in cinematography and being recognized for it. I am hopeful that in our lifetime we will be able to see the rise of more women…that surge of light that has been held back for far too long.”
