This was the first weekend that Maleficent grossed more than Oz on boxofficemojo's side-by-side comparisons.  Over the last two weeks, Maleficent had frequently out-grossed Oz on weekdays but would lose ground on weekends.  Weekend spikes tend to be higher when students are still in school (Oz was released in March) and Summer weekends are more competitive with a big title being released every week -- for Maleficent the last two weekends saw the debuts of its two biggest direct competitors in Fault and Dragon.  Now that Maleficent is pulling ahead on the daily tallies, Oz's $234.9M domestic no longer looks out of reach.

“Maleficent” continued to enchant foreign moviegoers, as the Walt Disney Studios release captured first place at the international box office this weekend.
The Angelina Jolie vehicle crossed the $500 million mark globally after adding $44.7 million to it haul from 54 foreign territories. Its foreign grosses were robust in large part because it opened in China, the world’s second largest film market, to $20.3 million.
With Japan still to open on July 4, “Maleficent” now ranks as Jolie’s highest grossing live-action movie of all-time.
The fantasy adventure was followed closely behind by “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” which racked up $43.5 million from 53 foreign territories, driving its global total to $172.4 million. The DreamWorks Animation release was also the highest grossing film on a worldwide basis, racking up $68.8 million from the foreign and domestic box office.
The film managed to thrive despite intense interest in the World Cup. In soccer-obsessed Brazil, the picture debuted to $6.8 million, the second biggest opening of all time for an animated film. The film has yet to debut in many prime European markets — a concession to the global appeal of the soccer contest.
Rounding out the top five films on foreign charts were “Edge of Tomorrow” with $21.5 million from 65 foreign markets, “The Fault in Our Stars” with $20 million from 45 territories and “Godzilla” with $15 million from 57 overseas territories.

Leading the holdovers, Disney’s Maleficent cast its spell over the Middle Kingdom this weekend, its 4th in international release. The first outing in China was an estimated $20.3M, good for a No. 1 spot and catapulting the territory to the 5th slot on Maleficent’s list of biggest overseas box office outposts. It was also the 4th biggest opening weekend in the market for a Disney release, and helped push the Angelina Jolie-starrer over $500M worldwide for an estimated global box office total of $521.6M. The international portion of that is an estimated $335.6M. It’s also made this Jolie’s highest-grossing live-action movie of her career. Overall, the weekend was worth $44.7M across 54 territories. The Sleeping Beauty spinoff goes to Japan on July 4.

Box Office Milestone: 'Maleficent' Crosses $500M, Angelina Jolie's Career Best

The Disney fairy tale becomes the actresses' No. 1 live-action film; it also passes up the studio's "Oz the Great and Powerful."

Talk about a fairy tale ending.

Over the weekend, Maleficent raced past the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office to become Angelina Jolie's highest-grossing live-action film of all time, not accounting for inflation. Her previous best was Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which took in $478.2 million in 2005.

Maleficent, a passion project for Jolie, has enjoyed impressive staying power. In North America, the Disney title stayed in the top five in its fourth weekend, grossing $13 million for a domestic total of $186 million.

 Overseas, the female-fueled movie took in another $44.7 million from 54 markets, including a $20.3 million debut in China. Maleficent has earned $335.6 million internationally and $521.6 million worldwide.

Also over the weekend, Maleficent passed up Disney's live-action fairy tale Oz the Great and Powerful, which grossed $493.3 million worldwide.

Maleficent's top international markets are Mexico ($40.4 million), Russia ($34.8 million), the U.K. ($25.7 million) and Brazil $24.2 million. The movie has yet to open in Japan (July 4).
