Random Thoughts

The big spike in Malefiecnt's Positive:Negative tweet ratio may be due to the film's opening in China.  I have never seen anything at this level (60+ : 1 positive) for any recent film.  Its continued high tweet volume, overwhelmingly positive ratio, and A Cinemascore all point to very strong word of mouth helping to fuel its box office.   The film weathered having to face its two stiffest competitors this Summer (Fault and Dragon 2) in back-to-back weekends and held up better than analysts were expecting.  This is the first weekend where it hasn't had to face a new strong rival for its core demo so its not a surprise that its week-to-week hold numbers have improved.  Without any strong direct competitor coming up, it should stay at this level for most of the rest of the Summer.

Boxofficemojo's Ray Saubers tweeted his surprise that Maleficent was set to earn more than Spider-man 2, Godzilla, and Dragon 2.   But in fact, if you compare box office performance after opening weekend, Maleficent is out-earning all the other big summer releases including X-Men
