In documents obtained by PEOPLE on Tuesday, June 9, the 21-year-old filed a petition for a change of name in the Superior Court of California. TMZ was first to report the news.

PEOPLE reached out to reps for Jolie and Pitt.

Zahara’s filing dates back to April 28 and came just days after her brother, 24-year-old Maddox Jolie, also filed to legally remove his father’s last name following their parents’ split in 2016 after two years of marriage and over 10 years as a couple. Their divorce was finalized in December 2024.

On Tuesday (June 9), TMZ reported that Zahara, 21, filled court documents to remove “Pitt” as her last name.

According to the petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Zahara is asking for her new legal name to be “Zahara Marley Jolie.”

PR releases are as notable for what they say as for what they sweep under the rug.  In this instance, perhaps even more so.

Angelina Jolie makes sure to always show support for her children.

An exclusive source tells PEOPLE that the actress and doting mom, 50, has an "amazing relationship" with her daughter Zahara, 21, who recently graduated from Spelman College. The insider adds that Jolie shows up for "pretty much everything" her daughter is involved in.

"Angie has showed up for pretty much everything — move-in weekend, sorority events, milestone celebrations and now graduation," the source tells PEOPLE. "She's been very supportive and involved. She wanted Zahara to have the best experience, and she has an amazing relationship with Zahara."

Alongside Zahara, Jolie and her ex-husband Brad Pitt, share twins Vivienne and Knox, 17, plus daughter Shiloh, 19, and sons Pax, 22, and Maddox, 24. The insider went on to say the Eternals star encourages all of her children to embrace their full individuality, adding that raising her kids and being a mom "makes her the happiest."

"She really encourages all the kids to embrace their individualities. She always loved their different personalities, interests and talents," the source says. "She makes an effort to support what matters to each of them."

"She's the kind of mom who genuinely wants to be present for the important moments in their lives, and the kids love her," the insider adds. "They often tell her she's the best mom, and it makes her tear up. Motherhood is very emotional for her. It makes her the happiest."

Angelina Jolie's oldest daughter, 21, dropped her father Brad Pitt's last name as she walked across the stage to accept her diploma from Spelman College.

The 139th commencement at the college in Atlanta took place on Sunday, May 17. Zahara graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, according to a commencement program.

While the college graduate was listed as Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt on the commencement program, her name was read as "Zahara Marley Jolie" as she walked across the stage.

Angelina Jolie is once again showing her support for Zahara Jolie-Pitt.

The Oscar winner, 49, attended a brunch in Montgomery, Ala., with her 20-year-old daughter on Saturday, March 1, to raise awareness for period poverty, which the National Institutes of Health describes as women and girls “having insufficient access to menstrual products, education, and sanitation facilities.”

Zahara, who joined Spelman College’s chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority in November 2023, was the keynote speaker for the Women in Training Inc.’s fourth Mother-Daughter Brunch at the Renaissance hotel.

“We are truly honored that Zahara Jolie-Pitt will speak at the Fourth Annual WIT Mother-Daughter Brunch about her passion to end period poverty, which is the mission of Women in Training,” the non-profit organization’s president and CEO Adeyela Bennett said ahead of the event, according to WAKA 8 Action News.

She continued, “We are also excited that her mother, the internationally renowned movie star Angelina Jolie, will join us to support her daughter and to support our goal of ensuring that every girl and young woman has the products she needs to live her life to the fullest extent.”

The second time (we know of) that Zahara has publicly introduced herself as Zahara Jolie. She hasn't (yet) taken the step to make it legal. The slide onscreen while she spoke read Zahara Jolie-Pitt. She apparently didn't communicate to the organzers how she wanted to be called.
