Breitling Summit

He replaced the bike chain bracelet with what looks like David Yurman's Deco Leather ID bracelet.  He appeared to be wearing the same bracelet during OUATIH's L.A. premiere. It was one of the bracelets visible outside his sleeve that Sat Hari claimed was her love bangle, the other was Yurman's woven red nylon with black onyx and 8 beads which she claimed was her elephant bracelet.  Some of her pieces were featured in the tabloids and given her attempts to claim bracelets that were manifestly not hers, even though her 15 minutes of fame was cut short, it could still be potentially lucrative.  She was previously known for hanging out with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and injecting them with ozone.

Yurman's gold skull, gold chain, red tiger's eye, black onyx are also discernible.

New Breitling watch, bee ring, gold skulls, beads, gold chain, an ID bracelet, but no bike chain.  He was still wearing the bike bracelet -- which Sat Hari also claimed was hers -- along with the other bracelets from David Yurman during the press con for Ad Astra on Sept. 18.   The premiere took place later the same day and it was the paps outside the after-party that tried to link Hari to Brad.  In general, they don't like to respond to tabloid reports so it's hard to say that he replaced the bike chain because of the tabs, but it is of course a possibility.  He reacted when Christiane Amanpour asked, "What about women?" after he spoke about his Dad and being a dad (4:44) in their interview.  Although her question turned out to be about the women in the film, he was wary of the topic and had his antennae up.

Brad is obviously doing his best to display a new, dark face Breitling watch.  Perhaps just delivered to him in Cannes by George Kern.  His previous one had a white face.  Breitling promptly tweeted that he is wearing the Premier Norton Edition.

Also displaying his shiny gold necklaces












 


Unlike in the days immediately after the judgement was posted when he looked morose, he is giddily happy and playful.  His relationship with the kids must be improving very well.

He is already a bit proud, Georges Kern, 53, the boss of the Swiss watch manufacturer Breitling. " Brad Pitt has never done such a thing," he says at the 5-star hotel in Beijing where he will be staying this week. "He has never traveled to another country for the cause of a brand." Lightness joins pride. "I believe it only when he has set his feet on Chinese soil."

The next day he is there. Brad Pitt sits relaxed at the round table in a windowless room in the futuristic Phoenix Center in the city center. He landed on time, with an entourage of six people. There are strong guards outside the door. On the wall hangs a drawing on which storks dance. The jacket of the tuxedo hangs on Pitts chair, the bow tie loosens on the neck. Next to him are fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh , 74, and actor Daniel Wu, 44. The three Breitling brand ambassadors receive journalists. The questions are addressed to Brad Pitt.


Mr. Pitt, you promote the Breitling watches in Beijing. How could CEO Georges Kern convince you to be a brand ambassador?
I love watches. They radiate something very masculine. My father gave me my first watch. The history of the analog clock is centuries old, yet it has never lost its effect and purpose.


Why did you decide to be part of the Breitling Cinema Squad?

To be a part of The Breitling Squad is exciting. Breitling has been around for over a century and is now rebranding itself, looking towards the future and redefining itself. It’s an exciting thing to be a part of it. The brand is a living example of incredible longevity. Of course working with Peter [Lindbergh] is great, we first met twenty years ago.

What are the common codes that you see between you and a brand like Breitling?

Quality is very important to me. Precision – which I’m always striving for. Elegance that I also strive for, and purpose. I think these are the things that I’m certainly drawn to and that speak to me. The brand is undergoing a transformation while also incorporating its history into the designs and I’m enjoying being part of it.

How do you explain the timelessness?
Watchmakers have constantly reinvented their craft. They are great people.



How often do you wear a watch?
Actually daily. I rarely go out of the house without a clock, although the phone shows me the exact time. But a mechanical watch gives me much more than time. You feel their importance, they radiate elegance.

How important is a mechanical watch and what does it mean to you?

Despite the fact that I look at my smartphone a lot for practical reasons, I wear a watch almost every day. It is a statement of masculine taste, and with its mechanical movement and rich history – an expression of real elegance.


What do you do if you have three hours more time each day?
I would try to create something creative.

Mr. Pitt, you are known for your love of architecture. Which is your favorite building?
Pitt looks at Daniel Wu:  You would have to ask Daniel, he's a trained architect. I'm just a fan, a tourist who likes to look at beautiful houses.

There must be a building in the world that you particularly value.
If I were to call a single building, all the other good buildings would be worth less.

Beijing is famous for architecture. Which houses will you visit during your visit?
This is my first time in Beijing and I am really looking forward to the diversity of the houses. For example, to the new headquarters of China Central Television of Koolhaas and in particular to the Olympic Stadium, the bird's nest of Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. I am deeply impressed by rooms based on the Feng Shui principle.
You also have an interest in architecture?
Somebody said that architecture is my real passion… Actually, I consider myself only a tourist in the architecture space. To me it’s not just architecture, but the art, the creativity. A building is a sculpture. It says a lot about how we live today, how we interact with others. Its function defines how we live our day. Buildings in Beijing like CCTV house and Bird’s Nest attract me a lot.

Is architecture as important to you as the cinema?
Not only the architecture, I follow the creative work of people in different areas. I am particularly impressed by art.

Not only are you an actor, you also produce a number of serious films through your production company Plan B. Three of them - "Vice," "Beautiful Boy," and "If Beale Street Could Talk" - are considered current contenders for an Oscar. What do you do better than other producers?
A few years ago, with two friends, I started a small business to tell stories that are close to our hearts. The whole thing feels a bit like a band practicing in the garage.
Since you’ve started producing movies, you have gained three Oscar nominations. Are you doing something differently to the others?
Two friends and I started Plan B as a little garage band. Small movies were being made and big tent pole movies were being made, and in between, there were a lot of talented directors, writers and storytellers that were having a difficult time. We wanted to encourage and promote these people that we believed in. That’s how we got started.

What we found ourselves really being drawn to was “complicated” material. I call it “complicated” to describe the degree of difficulty to get the story made to completion. Projects like these need so much more support to go from idea to film. In a way, we still have the same enthusiasm of a garage band. I always think: “If we find this idea interesting, then other people will too.” The question is how many people? But that isn’t my game. I’m just interested in the stories. It’s a quest for quality storytelling. Being a producer became much more fruitful and is much more fun than I ever imagined.

"Vice" is a critical film about the time of US President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Which fabrics are you looking for?
These are films that are difficult to finance. We always follow the same principle: If we like a project, we do it. We are amazed ourselves how far we have come with it.

What attracts you to buy a watch?
The most important things for me are the aesthetics and what it feels like to wear. Not every watch feels the same on your arm. Finely-made watches just like these [gestures to the Premier B01 Chronograph on his wrist] have a certain gravitas, a weight… That’s something that I like to feel on my wrist.

When did you first own a Breitling watch?
I got into them first actually when I was travelling and I bought an Emergency watch. It’s not like I would every really be in danger but the idea was exciting. So I think I first invested then. And also being that the history of Breitling links to aviation, I got my pilot’s licence about twelve years ago so that took me to Breitling for the Pilot watch.

What qualities do you think a successful man must have?
Of course there’s creative success and there’s personal success that I hold in more esteem. The best words are integrity and honesty and to be true to oneself. I’m more drawn to sincerity than I am to machoism. I think vulnerability in a male is actually very strong. I think that the only responsibility I have is towards myself, my family, the people I love and the people I work with. I want to be authentic and honest.

You're not just a filmmaker, you're a global superstar. What is your responsibility in this role?
I have a responsibility to myself and my family to remain true and authentic. I treat people whom I love honestly and sincerely.

You have over 80 rolls of film. How many figures have become part of you?
In a movie, I'm fixated on a figure between three and six months. Every facial expression, every word is enormously important. As soon as the film is turned off, I forget everything, as if someone pressed the reset button. This will give me space for the next movie. It happens that someone addresses me with a quote from a movie that I have no memory of.

Many of your films deal with challenging issues and stories…
Firstly we wanted to support friends who were having a tough time in the industry – talented directors and writers. We wanted to encourage and promote the people that we believed in. We then realised that we wanted to take on projects that dealt with more difficult subjects. But there’s something else that’s more important to me: We all have things in our lives that inspire us. If we all just cared a little bit more about the people around us, then the world would be a much better place. We need to start taking care of each other more.

What about your approach to acting roles, what can you share with us about that?
Usually, I take on a role, I study the lines, I live and breathe the different characters, and I can be very focused on it for three or even six months. When it’s done, when the clap falls for the last time, everything starts to blur and I concentrate on something new, to make room for the next project.


You just shot "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," again with director Quentin Tarantino. Why do you harmonize with him?
At the same time we made the breakthrough, he with "Reservoir Dogs", I with "Legends of the Fall". In one of his first screenplays ever - "True Romance" - I got a small role. Since then we are moving in similar spheres. Quentin is a real original that can touch you.

What can you tell us about your relationship with Quentin Tarantino?
My relationship with Quentin Tarantino started when we both were emerging around the same time, in the early Nineties. I worked on “True Romance” that was based on one of his “spec scripts” and then, “Inglorious Basterds”. He has an original voice, when you say “a Tarantino movie” everybody knows what it means. It’s part of the vernacular.

You emphasize the importance of choosing to participate in democracy.  Why do you say that?
Is your question a joke? You ask an American ...

The answer is no secret. It is in bright neon colors. We have to choose to reposition ourselves. The verdict on the present time is still pending. To secure the future, we have to choose.

Seeking help, Pitt looks at a media adviser and asks if he has expressed that diplomatically enough, the hidden criticism of US President Trump . He nods and says, "Thanks, that's it." Pitt grabs his coat, pulls the bowtie tight, hurries across the red carpet to the gala Georges Kern celebrates with him.
