Golden Globe Preview and Predictions

It’s that time of year again for the Golden Globes. Don’t forget to enter our contest.
We are now in the awkward position of defending the HFPA as being the last major awards group that gave Best Picture to The Social Network before it hit the Producers Guild. The opposite scenario happened the year prior when Avatar won the Globe before The Hurt Locker won the Producers Guild and and on and on it went. This year, most are expecting The Artist to win everything, so naturally that means it should clean up in the Globes (it only has to win in Comedy, which is like Tiger Woods playing miniature golf). We still don’t know if the year will offer up surprises or if it will go as planned. The trick is not minding. I did thoroughly enjoy this slate piece In Praise of the Golden Globes. It really is true that, despite the complaining people do about the Globes, their choices tend to fare better over time. This year, there are no bad films in the lineup in the drama category – so it feels like a win/win – if it’s The Descendants, how great would that be? If it’s Moneyball or Hugo? How can anyone complain? With those nominees they really can’t go wrong. I am predicting Hugo to win but the majority over at Gold Derby are predicting The Descendants.
We’re not quite at the point where everything screeches to a halt. That part is still to come when the Producers Guild give you a better idea of where the race might be headed. The Globes, I’ve come to find, is a celebration onto itself. It can be a test run for Oscar, just as the Critics Choice was, to see whether the win felt right to you or whether it felt really wrong. For instance, it was just plain bad timing for the BFCAs to show that Scorsese clip, feel the love of that director in the room and then watch him lose the Critics Choice to poor Hazanavicius who had to take the stage nonetheless. The same sort of thing happened when Kathryn Bigelow was doing the impossible by winning everything but then we had to watch her lose at the Globes to Jim Cameron. That was a wrong that needed to be fixed. I don’t expect the same scenario to play out with the Artist — obviously that is your clear running horse at the moment. It isn’t quite lighting the box office the same way The King’s Speech did. The Artist’s biggest problem is that people don’t want to see it. But the awards race should mostly turn that around. If it keeps up this way, though, box office actually might be a part of the discussion for the first time in a while. If The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is nominated for Best Picture (we still don’t yet know how that last-minute surprise will play out) The Artist will have to beat two Best Picture nominees with killer box office; Dragon Tattoo is zooming towards $100 mil with no signs of slowing down and The Help went all the way to $165 mil. At a time when American box office is in deep shit this might be a point of consideration. But we’re not quite there yet. We’re still back here at the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs miniature golf fairway.

It seems crazy anything should win here except The Descendants. As you all know, I’m an inclined towards Hugo, as I feel it is a masterpiece that goes beyond what any of the other films do. The Descendants is a great one too. I am torn. I think it will be The Descendants, but since everyone is predicting that already I might as well make it interesting for myself, stuck here in my cage as I am, and predict Hugo to win it.

Globe Winner Predictions. A Nail Biting Night?

I normally look forward to Golden Globe night with the feverish pitch I otherwise save for Oscar Nomination Morning and Oscar Night itself. They're the holy trinity of awards season Father (Oscar Noms), Son (Oscar Night) and uh... Holy Ghost (The Globes). Well, there are spirits involved. I expect that the drunkest table will belong to The Help or Bridesmaids. Here's to inebriated ladies!
And here are my predictions. I'm just going for it and predicting a return to... January 2003. Wait, what? Read on!

With most of the attention swinging towards The Artist, Best Picture Drama feels like a free for all this year. Three films (The Descendants, Hugo and The Help) look like feasible winners since they've retained heat after the nominations. Common wisdom points to the inexplicable near-universal love for The Descendants but for whatever reason I'm imagining a repeat of the 2002/2003 Globes season wherein the throbbing heart of a female epic (The Hours) beat out an expensive Scorsese film and the Alexander Payne film about the widower dealing with his angry daughter whilst having spiritual awakenings. (Gangs of New York and About Schmidt)

This one seems all sewn up for The Artist but I think it's worth noting that the Comedy or Musical category tends to be where the Golden Globes house their biggest surprises on average. That said a defeat for the Artist would be the kind of shocker that only happens once a decade.

Hazanavicius may or may not be the frontrunner for the Oscar. It's tough to say with lesser known directors when they're battling cinematic giants who win awards based on their whole filmography rather than the specific film they're up for. But I'm guessing that the presence of Woody Allen pulls enough votes from Martin Scorsese to keep Hazanavicius in the lead.

This is probably a super tight race between friends who refuse to be combatants in all things Best Actress this year. It might be foolish to predict a surprise win for The Help in film and not its lead actress but if there's anyone who loves Meryl Streep as much as her super-fans on the web, it's the HFPA. She's their all time nomination leader and she's also won 7 of their acting trophies. Sometimes in television categories the Globe is all about the hot new thing and if they have a freakout about a new plaything we could have the shocker of a Mara victory.

Common wisdom will tell you that it's impossible for Michelle Williams to lose this since it's a dramatic biopic category in a comedic shortlist. But common wisdom forgets that the Globes sometimes do really love to laugh. I don't think this is locked for Michelle but I do think it'd be a big crazy to predict a loss... particularly with Kristen Wiig seemingly eager to move on from Bridesmaids; she's not interested in doing a sequel and she's busy with new projects so is she really going to be schmoozing the HFPA to win this one?

GLAMOUR. GLAMOUR. GLAMOUR. When the Globes decide to throw a movie star party, they know how to corral the biggest stars. This year they did it without embarrassing themselves like last year's Depp Double Dip of Depp D'oh! I think this is going to be really close and neither name would surprise me, but let's just assume that the Angelina Jolie factor -- also in the running for her directorial debut -- tips the odds ever so slightly in Pitt's favor.

If Ryan Gosling wanted to win awards. If he really cared about doing so, he might have put up a fight here or in drama (since The Globes are more likely to reward the young male beauties than Oscar is) but he doesn't. And plus: Jean Dujardin is charming in person and just fantastic onscreen.

I know people feel that A Separation is unstoppable on its march towards Oscar. And though I wish that were true since I'm totes in love with it, I don't believe true locks are ever possible in foreign film categories unless the foreign film is also up for Best Picture. And besides... being a masterpiece is kind of giving yourself your own golden statue. Masterpieces have lost many prizes over the centuries. And how are they going to turn down an Angelina Jolie moment?

Who will stop Meryl?

Will Meryl Streep’s unanimously acclaimed performance as “The Iron Lady” earn her another trophy in the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday (Monday morning, Manila time)?

Or will one of the following pull a surprise over Meryl and win the Best Actress-Drama honors? The other contenders are Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs”), Viola Davis (“The Help”), Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) and Tilda Swinton (“We Need To Talk About Kevin”).

There are no clear frontrunners in the other categories, which should make for a suspenseful evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. But the results of the Sunday event will establish the trend in a year where the race is virtually everyone’s ballgame.

In the Best Picture-Drama field for example, there’s no dominant film. Any of these nominees may take home the Golden Globe (GG): “The Descendants,” “The Help,” “Hugo,” “The Ides of March,” “Moneyball” and “War Horse.”

The Best Actor-Drama is just as open. The equally deserving contenders are George Clooney (“The Descendants”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“J. Edgar”), Michael Fassbender (“Shame”), Ryan Gosling (“The Ides of March”) and Brad Pitt (“Moneyball”).

While “The Artist” leads the GG nominations with six nods, it faces stiff competition in the Best Picture-Comedy or Musical category from “Bridesmaids,” “Midnight in Paris,” “My Week With Marilyn” and “50/50.”

Frontrunners

In the Best Actress-Comedy or Musical race, Kristen Wiig (“Bridesmaids”) and Michelle Williams (“My Week With Marilyn”) are reported as frontrunners but don’t count out Charlize Theron (“Young Adult”), and Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet, both from “Carnage.”

The Best Actor-Comedy or Musical contest may be a clearer one, based on the buzz for “The Artist.” In Jean Dujardin way’s are Ryan Gosling (“Crazy, Stupid, Love”), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“50/50”), Owen Wilson (“Midnight in Paris”) and Brendan Gleeson (“The Guard”).

Nowhere is the open race more evident than in the Best Animated Picture competition. The year 2011 saw a bounty of outstanding animated films so for the first time in many years, a Pixar film is not a shoo-in as the winner. “Cars 2” has to fend itself from just as strong fellow nominees: “The Adventures of Tintin,” “Arthur Christmas,” “Puss In Boots” and “Rango.”

Iran’s “A Separation” may appear to have the edge right now in the Best Foreign Language Film derby on the strength of the awards it has collected. But the Iranian entry could still be edged out by China’s “The Flowers of War,” USA’s “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” Belgium’s “The Kid With a Bike” and Spain’s “The Skin I Live In.”

Early favorites

When “The Help” was released in August last year, its Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain were early favorites to slug it out for the Best Supporting Actress award. But the arrival of the following films later in the year deepened the competition: “The Artist” (Berenice Bejo), “Albert Nobbs” (Janet McTeer) and “The Descendants” (Shailene Woodley).

The Best Supporting Actor contest is also just as suspenseful since it’s a wide-open race among Kenneth Branagh (“My Week With Marilyn”), Albert Brooks (“Drive”), Jonah Hill (“Moneyball”), Viggo Mortensen (“A Dangerous Method”) and Christopher Plummer (“Beginners”).

For Best Director, “The Artist’s” Michael Hazanavicius is up against equally strong contenders: Woody Allen (“Midnight In Paris”), George Clooney (“The Ides of March”), Alexander Payne (“The Descendants”) and Martin Scorsese (“Hugo”).

Will Madonna go on stage to collect her second GG? She, Julie Frost and Jimmy Harry are in the running for the Best Original Song Award with “Masterpiece.”

She is pitted against Elton John and Bernie Taupin (“Hello Hello” from “Gnomeo & Juliet”), Glenn Close and Brian Byrne (“Lay Your Head Down” from “Albert Nobbs”), Mary J. Golden Globes 2012 Predictions: Who Will Win On Sunday Night?

Get excited, Moviefone readers! On Sunday, the 69th annual Golden Globes will take place in Hollywood, Ricky Gervais will flame every star in attendance, and some pretty chintzy looking awards will get handed out to some of 2011's best and brightest performers. Fun times!

Who Will Win: In perhaps the sexiest best actor lineup ever it seems to be down to old pals George Clooney and Brad Pitt, both of whom already have multiple Golden Globes (as noted, the HFPA loves them a hot movie star). The edge here goes to Clooney (who has a whopping four nominations going into the night), though Pitt certainly stands a good chance. Knowing the Globes, maybe they'll simply give them a tie.

Who Should Win: The least famous of them all (for now), Michael Fassbender.

"The Kid With The Bike" (Belgium)

Who Will Win: Can the Academy resist getting Angelina Jolie on stage? That's the main question when considering this award, which otherwise would seem a safe bet for Oscar frontrunner "A Separation."

Ryan Gosling – “The Ides of March”

HFPA loves their stars and this is probably Clooney’s to lose but don’t be surprised to see Brad Pitt leap out in front of him. If a split occurs, Fassbender could be a beneficiary. DiCaprio and Gosling are just happy to be there.
