Jolie’s Foreign Correspondent Homage

The second I saw the pilot-windshield POV in a plane crash sequence from the trailer for Angelina Jolie‘s Unbroken (Universal, 12.25), I knew it had been respectfully stolen from a very similar shot in Alfred Hitchcock‘s Foreign Correspondent (’40). Obviously. Hitchcock achieved the effect of water smashing through the cockpit windshield by sending a couple of hundred gallons through a rice-paper projection screen. Jolie reportedly achieved the same effect in a similar physical manner.

Angelina Jolie's Moving 'Unbroken' Trailer Does Louis Zamperini Justice

I rarely read non-fiction, but the buzz around Laura Hillenbrand’s account of Louis Zamperini’s absolutely insane and inspiring life caused me to pick up her book last year, and once I did, I simply couldn’t put it down. Zamperini — who died at the age of 97 (only eight days ago) — really lived through at least three lives; each could easily have made for an interesting tale on its own. The history of his childhood and the start of his Olympic track career, his military service and adventures as a bombardier, a Life of Pi-ish ocean survival after a plane crash, and his subsequent capture by the Japanese military is alternately exhilarating and soul-crushing. Zamperini’s lives begged to be told, both in book and film form.
Directed by Angelina Jolie, and headed up by rising star Jack O’Connell (who’s receiving rave reviews for his performance in Starred Up, Unbroken will likely do well at the box office, but even better is that the trailer looks great:
Maybe it’s cheesy to admit, but that both gave me chills, and made me a little teary. If you haven’t yet read Hillenbrand’s book, just do it — you won’t be sorry. And meet me at the theater Christmas Day. With a screenplay written by Joel and Ethan Coen, Richard LaGravenese (Behind the Candelabra, Beautiful Creatures), and William Nicholson (Gladiator, Elizabeth: The Golden Age and cinematography by Roger Deakins, Unbroken co-stars Garrett Hedlund, Domhnall Gleeson and Jai Courtney.
