Angelina Jolie : "Agnès Varda est une source d’inspiration pour nous tous”

Agnès Varda a reçu samedi soir à Hollywood un Oscar d’honneur, le premier jamais remis à une femme réalisatrice. C’est Angelina Jolie qui lui a remis la récompense en personne. Nous l'avons rencontrée.

Les deux femmes se connaissent bien et Angelina Jolie tenait absolument à féliciter Agnès Varda qu’elle considère comme l’une des pionnières d’un cinéma différent. La star a accepté de se confier en exclusivité pour Paris Match sur son admiration pour la réalisatrice française.

Paris Match. Pourquoi souhaitiez-vous être présente samedi soir aux cotés d’Agnès Varda lors de la remise de son Oscar d’honneur ?
Angelina Jolie. Tout d’abord parce que c’est une femme et qu’elle est la première réalisatrice à recevoir à Oscar d’honneur dans l’histoire. Mais, Agnès, c’est encore plus que cela, ce n’est pas qu’une femme, c’est une personne tout simplement extraordinaire.

Pourquoi ?
Parce qu’elle a su par son cinéma parler du monde, et surtout des gens, avec empathie, curiosité et surtout avec beaucoup d’amour. Quand je suis avec Agnès, je comprends à nouveau ce que c’est d’être une artiste. Quand vous passez du temps avec elle, elle vous rappelle combien il ne faut surtout pas être dans la norme, il faut regarder plus loin et interroger le monde.

Elle représente aussi la Nouvelle vague, cette façon différente d’aborder le cinéma dont elle a été une des inspiratrices…
Mais pour moi, Agnès est la nouvelle vague. Elle a selon moi apporté encore davantage au cinéma que des cinéastes comme Godard ou Truffaut. Pour cette cérémonie, Steven Spielberg s’est déplacé spécialement pour elle, pour lui dire combien elle avait apporté au cinéma, comment cette façon différente de faire des films l’avait nourri quand il était encore étudiant. Et aujourd’hui, quand je vois «Visages Villages», son dernier film, qu’elle a tourné à presque 90 ans, je pense qu’elle est la plus jeune et la plus créative d’entre nous. C’est un film tellement poétique et léger qu’il en est presque naïf mais, en même temps, il pose la question de la transmission, des idéaux perdus. Et surtout, Agnès sait filmer les maux de nos sociétés comme personne d’autre. Elle est un exemple d’intelligence et de non-conformisme pour nous tous.

The two women know each other well and Angelina Jolie was keen to congratulate Agnès Varda, whom she considers to be one of the pioneers of a different cinema. The star has agreed to confide exclusively to Paris Match on his admiration for the French director.

Paris Match. Why did you want to be present on Saturday evening with Agnès Varda at the presentation of her Honorary Oscar?

Angelina Jolie. First of all because she is a woman and she is the first director to be awarded honorary Oscar in history. But, Agnes, it's even more than that, it's not just a woman, she's just an extraordinary person.

Why ?

Because she knew by her cinema to speak about the world, and especially people, with empathy, curiosity and especially with a lot of love. When I'm with Agnes, I understand again what it's like to be an artist. When you spend time with her, she reminds you how much you should not be in the norm, you have to look further and question the world.

She also represents the New Wave, this different way of approaching the cinema of which she was one of the inspiring ...

But for me, Agnes is the new wave. In my opinion, she has brought more to the cinema than filmmakers such as Godard or Truffaut. For this ceremony, Steven Spielberg moved especially for her, to tell her how much she had brought to the cinema, how this different way of making movies had fed him when he was still a student. And today, when I see "Faces Places", her last film, which she turned to almost 90 years, I think she is the youngest and most creative of us. It is such a poetic and light film that it is almost naive but, at the same time, it raises the question of transmission, the lost ideals. And most of all, Agnes knows how to film the ills of our societies like no one else. It is an example of intelligence and non-conformity for all of us.
