Maleficent earned $17.3 million this weekend. A big chunk of that came in Japan, where it opened in first place with an impressive $7.1 million. It took the top spot away from fellow Disney fantasy Frozen, which had held on to first for 16 weeks in a row. Movies typically hold well in Japan, which means Maleficent could be in for a very strong run here. To date, the movie has earned $416.3 million overseas, and could eventually approach $500 million.

Angelina Jolie's fantasy epic knocks Disney Animation's blockbuster out of top spot it's held for four months

The remarkable 16-week run atop the box-office of “Frozen” in Japan has ended, and it took Angelina Jolie‘s “Maleficent” to do it.

Disney's fantasy update opened to $7.1 million — the year's biggest for a live-action movie there — to displace “Frozen” after four months. The Disney Animation blockbuster has taken in more than $240 million from Japan since opening at No. 1 there on March 15.

“Frozen” is the highest-grossing Disney film ever in Japan, and ranks behind only “Titanic” as the biggest box-office hit ever in that country. “Frozen” is the biggest animated movie of all time, with more than $1.2 billion in global grosses.

“Maleficient,” by far Jolie's biggest movie ever, is up to $630 million globally.

Trailers for “Maleficent” have been playing ahead of “Frozen” throughout its record run in Japan, where the Disney brand is huge.

“We've had an incredible run with ‘Frozen’ and it's been a terrific platform for exposing audiences to ‘Maleficent',” Disney's head of distribution Dave Hollis told TheWrap. “There are some significant similarities between the films — its female-empowering message, for one — and we think it will be embraced there.”

Intl Box Office: ‘Maleficent’ Dethrones ‘Frozen’ In Japan With $7.1M No. 1 Bow

Disney’s Maleficent crossed $600M this week, as I reported on Wednesday. But the big news here is that it is also the film that has finally snatched the No. 1 crown from Disney’s own Frozen in Japan. I suspected it would do so, and it earned the title with an estimated $7.1M debut. That marks the biggest opening weekend for a live-action import in 2014 and is also the biggest bow for an Angelina Jolie title in the market. Frozen, which was No. 1 for an amazing 16 consecutive frames, added an estimated $1.8M in Japan this weekend (the cume there is a regal $240.8M). That is likely to put it into the No. 3 spot given Edge Of Tomorrow also bowed locally. I’ll update with numbers from Warner Bros (and others) as they arrive.
In all, Maleficent earned $17.3M this weekend from 55 territories and crossed the $400M international mark with a current tally of $416.3M. Mexico remains the top overseas market with $44.4M, followed by China at $42.8M. The worldwide box office total is $630.2M.
