Summer 2014 box office predictions

Which films will make the top ten?

5. 'Maleficent'

Release date: May 30
Rating: PG
Comparisons: "Alice in Wonderland" ($334 million), "Oz: The Great and Powerful" ($234 million)
Prediction: $215 million
Why: Audiences love fairy tales, especially Disney fairy tales, and audiences presumably still love Angelina Jolie, although she hasn't been seen on the big screen since the 2010 double-header "Salt" and "The Tourist." However, don't expect it to make the same money as "Alice" or, possibly, even "Oz," as both those films opened in the relatively uncrowded month of March. "Maleficent" will have to deal with holdovers like "Godzilla" and "X-Men," and you certainly can't count out Seth MacFarlane's "A Million Ways to Die in the West," which is opening the same day and is likely to be a big draw.
