UN special envoy and actress Angelina Jolie has visited Syrian refugees in the Domiz camp in the northern Iraqi Kurdish province of Duhouk.
According to the UN refugee agency, some 22,847 Syrians have fled to Iraq since the conflict in Syria began.
Angelina Jolie has recently visited refugee camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan to shed light on the plight of the Syrian refugees and to call on the international community for help.

16 September 2012 – On the last stop of a tour of countries neighbouring conflict-ridden Syria, United Nations special envoy Angelina Jolie on Sunday hailed the Iraqi Government's willingness to host those who have fled the violence and said she hoped that all Syrians seeking asylum would be welcomed.
“I want to highlight the noble efforts of the Iraqi Government and the people of Iraq to support Syrian refugees,” said the Hollywood actress, who is also a special envoy for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
“At this juncture, it is critical that Iraq receives urgent international support and continues to welcome refugees across its borders,” she added.
More than 260,000 Syrian refugees have been registered in neighbouring countries since the conflict began in March 2011, according to UNHCR. Earlier this week, Ms. Jolie visited Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey with High Commissioner António Guterres, with both of them pledging continued support and emphasizing the life-saving importance of maintaining open borders and hosting Syrians in need.
More than 18,000 people, mostly civilians, have died since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began last year. Amidst reports of an escalation in violence in recent weeks in many towns and villages, as well as the country's two biggest cities, Damascus and Aleppo, UN agencies now estimate that some 2.5 million Syrians are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Ms. Jolie spent Sunday meeting with Syrian refugees in the Domiz camp in northern Iraq. She also met officials of the Kurdistan Regional Government, including the prime minister, the interior minister and the governor of Dohuk. Many of the officials she met were former refugees.
While in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Saturday, the special envoy met with senior government officials and spent time with Iraqis, until recently refugees in Syria, who have returned to Iraq after fleeing violence in their places of former refuge.

On the final leg of her regional tour, UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie spent the weekend in Iraq. In Baghdad, she visited Iraqi families who had been displaced twice: first to Syria to escape the war in Iraq, and now back to Iraq.
UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie yesterday hailed the Iraqi government's willingness to host Syrian refugees fleeing violence and said she hoped all Syrians seeking asylum in Iraq would be welcomed.
"I want to highlight the noble efforts of the Iraqi government and the people of Iraq to support Syrian refugees," said Jolie. "At this juncture, it is critical that Iraq receives urgent international support and continues to welcome refugees across its borders."
In the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Saturday, Jolie met with senior government officials and spent time with Iraqis, until recently refugees in Syria, who have returned to Iraq after fleeing violence in their places of former refuge. She spent today meeting Syrian refugees in the Domiz camp in northern Iraq. She also met officials of the Kurdistan Regional Government, including Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and Interior Minister Karim Sinjari as well as the governors of Erbil and Dohuk. Many of the officials she met were former refugees. "We know how it feels," one official told Jolie.
In her meetings Saturday in Baghdad with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Hoshyar Zebari and the Minister of Displacement and Migration Dindar Najman Shafeeq and on Sunday with Kurdistan Regional Government officials, Jolie pledged further UNHCR support for the government in receiving and hosting additional Syrian refugees as their numbers rapidly increase.
This was her fourth and final stop of a tour of countries neighbouring Syria, where more than 260,000 Syrian refugees have been registered since the conflict began in March 2011.
Earlier this week, Jolie visited Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey with UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres. They both pledged continued support and emphasised the life-saving importance of maintaining open borders and hosting Syrians in need.
This is Jolie's fourth visit to Iraq. Approximately 1.3 million Iraqis remain displaced in their country and the government has made it a priority to improve their standard of living and find solutions for them through voluntary return to their places of origin or through local integration.
"Combined with the new influx of Syrian refugees and the sudden return of over 30,000 of their own citizens, the complexity of the situation and the challenges for this country just emerging from conflict cannot be overstated," Jolie said.

DOMIZ CAMP/DUHOK, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',—  Angelina Jolie, the Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, travelled to the Kurdistan Region on Sunday to visit refugees in camps along the Syrian border and to discuss with Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani the help provided by the Kurdistan Regional Government KRG.

Citing the $10million allocated by the KRG to provide for the needs of the refugees, the Prime Minister said, “We have not received any support from Baghdad, but of course this has not caused us to delay our aid. Instead of waiting for the support of the Federal Government, we have provided immediate assistance to those who have sought shelter with us.”

Hollywood actress Jolie called for Syria's neighbours to keep their borders open to refugees, during a visit to a refugee camp in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region.

"The most important thing is cooperation from the countries on the (Syrian) border... and to make sure these borders in all countries stay open," said Jolie, a UN refugee agency (UNHCR) special envoy.

"I've been of course very encouraged to be here and hear the government speak of continuing this wonderful, life-saving open border policy," she told reporters at the Domiz refugee camp in Duhok province.

"I know how gracious the Kurdish government and the Kurdish region people have been to the Syrian refugees."

The three-province region hosts the majority of the Syrian refugees in Iraq.

According to the UNHCR Syria Regional Refugee Response website, there are 25,508 registered Syrian refugees in Iraq, of which 16,833 are in Duhok province.

Another 10,914 Syrian refugees are awaiting registration, putting the total at more than 36,000.

The UNHCR has said more than 250,000 Syrian refugees have been registered in neighbouring countries.

The total number of Syrians who have fled the bloody civil war between supporters and opponents of President Bashar al-Assad is even greater.

"With the continuation of the bloodshed in Syria, we have to all be prepared for a greater influx (of refugees), and I'm so happy to hear that the government is continuing to commit to these people," said Jolie.

The actress, who has been on a tour of countries bordering Syria, arrived in a white UN helicopter, then travelled to the camp by pickup truck.

She stepped out of the vehicle near the camp, waving to the whistling, cheering crowd of Syrian refugees that greeted her.

"I have been to the four borders of Syria, and this is the first camp I have been to where they are already preparing for winterisation, and also where there are ID cards, giving freedom of movement, which is an extraordinary thing," Jolie said.

A statement on UNHCR's website said she had met Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari and Displacement and Migration Minister Dendar Najman in Baghdad.

"Combined with the new influx of Syrian refugees and the sudden return of over 30,000 of their own citizens, the complexity of the situation and the challenges for this country just emerging from conflict cannot be overstated," the statement quoted Jolie as saying.

In April 2012, Ms Jolie was appointed Special Envoy of the UNHCR, before which she served for several years as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR. The famous Hollywood actress has been a very strong public advocate for human rights.
