U.N. envoy Angelina Jolie visits Syria refugees in Iraq

Baghdad (CNN) -- Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie visited a Syrian refugee camp in Baghdad and met senior government officials Saturday on a visit to Iraq in her role as a special envoy for the U.N.'s refugee agency.

Minister Hoshyar Zebari discussed the situation of Syrian refugees in
Iraq while meeting at his office in Baghdad, the foreign ministry said
in a statement
They also talked about the efforts made by the Iraqi government to meet the daily needs of refugees, the statement said.
Zebari told Jolie that
the number of Syrian refugees who have fled the conflict to seek
sanctuary in Iraq has risen to 21,000. Many are now living in Iraq's
western Anbar and northern Duhok provinces.
Zebari said that nearly 31,000 Iraqis have also fled the war in Syria and returned to their native country.
Jolie also met with officials from the Iraqi ministry that deals with displaced persons.
Later Saturday, Jolie will fly to Irbil to meet Kurdish officials and will visit another Syrian refugee camp in the north.
Jolie has recently
visited refugee camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan to highlight
suffering and the need for international humanitarian assistance.
While at the Zaatari
refugee camp in Jordan on Tuesday, Jolie, who is herself raising six
children with partner Brad Pitt, spoke of the horrors that children,
many of them orphans, have witnessed in Syria.
"I am grateful to Jordan
and the border countries for saving the lives (of those) who are dying
in Syria. It's an extraordinary thing. We encourage the international
community to support the people here until one day they go back home,"
she said.
Jolie, who was appointed
a special envoy of U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres
in April, accompanied Guterres on a visit to the Kilis camp in Turkey
on Thursday.
She was previously a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Refugee Agency, undertaking more than 40 field trips on its behalf.

in Syria.
A government statement said Jolie on Saturday urged Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari to ensure the refugees have enough supplies.

said an estimated 21,000 Syrian refugees are living in Iraq's western
Anbar and Dohuk provinces. Another 31,000 Iraqis who years ago fled to
Syria to escape sectarian fighting in their homeland have returned, he
said.
Jolie is a goodwill ambassador for the
U.N.'s refugee agency. She is expected to visit the Kurdish self-rule
capital of Irbil in northern Iraq on Sunday.
It was a rare visit to Iraq by an American movie star. She posed for pictures with Zebari but was not available for interviews.

BAGHDAD,— Hollywood star Angelina Jolie met Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari on Saturday to discuss measures to care for Syrian refugees in Iraq, the foreign ministry said.
They discussed "the situation of Syrian refugees in Iraq and steps taken by the Iraqi government to ensure a decent life for them," the ministry said.
Zebari said Iraq was hosting more than 20,000 Syrians who fled the bloodshed in their country.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says the number of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries have exceeded 250,000.
Jolie, a special UN envoy, will head Sunday to Erbil, the capital of autonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq's north, to meet Syrian refugees housed in camps at Duhok.
Before travelling to Iraq, Jolie already visited Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

For Angelina Jolie, Saturday is all business.
She took a trip to Baghdad to meet with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari. As a special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie advocates for refugees around the world. On Friday, she told the Associated Press that with winter approaching, she's concerned about the plight of hundreds of thousands of Syrians forced to flee their homes.
Later Saturday, Jolie planned to fly to Irbil to meet Kurdish officials and will visit a Syrian refugee camp. According to CNN, Jolie has recently visited refugee camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan to highlight suffering and the need for international humanitarian assistance.
Brad Pitt, meanwhile, will soon begin promoting his latest film, Killing Them Softly, which is out Nov. 30.

On Saturday, the actress, advocate and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador met in Baghdad with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, who fêted the actress for her humanitarian work. In appreciation for her efforts, Zebari presented Jolie with a colorful red box containing a symbolic gift.
Per the Washington Post, Jolie urged Zebari to ensure Syrian refugees have enough supplies, and as part of her solidarity tour for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie has met with displaced Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon.

ERBIL, Sept. 15(AKnews) – Hollywood star and UN goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie is set to visit the Kurdistan Region's Syrian refugee camps tomorrow, said Deputy Head of the Region's Department of Foreign Relation.
Karwan Jamal Taher said Jolie will arrive in Erbil today at around 05.00 p.m. and will visit the office of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in Erbil.
Taher continued the UN goodwill ambassador will visit Syrian refugee camps in Duhok province tomorrow.
Jolie said in Ankara on Thursday "I share everyone's concerns about the winter approaching... with the violence showing no signs of easing up and the number of refugees growing."
She visited two Syrian refugee camps in Turkey on Thursday. She met some of the 12,000 refugees at Oncupinar camp in Kilis city. She also visited Islahiye in Gaziantep province that is sheltering nearly 8,000 Syrians, reported The Times of India.
According to UN figures, the Syrian crisis has forced some 235,000 Syrians to flee to neighboring countries, with 80,000 taking shelter in Turkey.

Angelina Jolie to Arrive in Kurdistan
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—An official source from the Kurdish government has told Rudaw that Hollywood star Angelina Jolie arrives in the Kurdistan Region on Saturday to visit Syrian refugee camps.
“Angelina Jolie will arrive in the Kurdistan Region at 5 o’clock tomorrow afternoon, and she will be the guest of the United Nations for two days,” said the source.
Jolie who was appointed in April as Special Envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), plans to visit refugee camps in Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province where hundreds of Kurdish families fleeing the violence in Syria are settled.
“She will visit the refugee camps of Kurdish families on Sunday,” the source told
This trip to the Kurdistan Region comes following visits by Jolie to camps in Turkey and Jordan where she and UNHCR commissioner Antonio Guterres met with Syrian refugees.
"With the violence in the conflict showing no signs of easing up and the numbers (of refugees) growing… it is a very large concern for all of us," Jolie told the media in Ankara.
Dumiz is the largest Syrian refugee camp in Duhok. Muhammad Abdullah Hamo, director of immigration in Duhok told last month that his office had registered 13, 721 Syrian refugees.
