Watch: Trailer For Angelina Jolie’s Directorial Debut ‘In The Land Of Blood And Honey’

Well, it looks like the Oscar race just got a major shakeup. Though it was slated a release date for December way back in the spring, Angelina Jolie‘s upcoming directorial debut “In The Land Of Blood And Honey” has been a completely unknown element. With no festival appearances, and a lack of stills and promotional material, it was left up to speculation if the film was a misguided vanity project, a true awards season contender or something else entirely. Well, a very meaty trailer has now landed online and Jolie looks to have delivered something that could change up the game this fall.
The film, which has already courted controversy, stars Zana Marjanović (”Snow”), Rade Šerbedžija (”Snatch”) and Goran Kostic (”Taken”) in a romantic drama about the troubled relationship between a Muslim woman and a Serbian man in the midst of the Bosnian war. The spot shows that Jolie isn’t shying away from the grittier elements of the war, and the love story plays out against a backdrop with the leads questioning their own emotional motivations and trust. “The film is specific to the Bosnian War, but it’s also universal,” Jolie said earlier this year. “I wanted to tell a story of how human relationships and behavior are deeply affected by living inside a war.”
All in all, it looks quite handsomely put together, and displays a very strong directorial hand, with some good performances to boot so consider us very pleasantly surprised. FilmDistrict will release the film into theaters on December 23rd. Watch below.

One week, Angelina Jolie had the flu. So she did what any normal person would do: sit down and pen a screenplay about the horrors of the Bosnian War.
That spurt of dazed creativity became In the Land of Blood and Honey, which Jolie went on to shoot and now, with its first trailer debuting online, stands to be one of the major Oscar contenders at the end of the year.
The film chronicles the romance between a Bosnian couple, Danijel and Lejla, who find themselves separated by war, only to be brought back together when Lejla is taken prisoner and incarcerated at Danijel's POW camp. Heavy stuff, and a look into an aspect of modern history that often goes overshadowed by most. The trailer looks especially stark, not taking reservations in its depiction of violence or emotional outbursts.
In the Land of Blood and Honey could fall either way: a gripping war drama with an honest relationship at its center, or a ham-fisted sap fist that demands our emotional reaction. Here's hoping for the former, as the trailer certainly appears to deliver. Jolie's already broken out as one of the few female stars who can successfully dabble in both serious drama and high octane action—can she do the same behind the camera?

She's spent enough time starring in one big film after another that Angelina Jolie has learned a thing or two for her first assignment behind the camera as director on the Bosnian War-set love story In The Land of Blood and Honey. The first trailer for the controversial (over there at least) film has arrived online, and damn does it pack a powerful punch. The film tracks the intense, turbulent ups and downs of a relationship between a Muslim woman and a Serbian man during the Bosnian war.
From the looks of the trailer, Jolie definitely jumped into those war sequences with both feet, and you can almost taste the hurt and anger and passion that's connecting these characters. Hollywood probably looks at a film like this and says, "Too bad it doesn't star Angelina Jolie and Daniel Craig (the lead actor sort of looks like him)", but we look at this trailer and say bring this sucker on! And kudos to FilmDistrict for taking a chance on this, as they have with other films this year (like Drive). They're really beginning to reveal themselves as a house that takes some risks with content and trusts its filmmakers. Whether their films make any money is a different story -- and one that may ultimately hurt them -- but boy do we love what they're investing in right now.

Angelina Jolie's In The Land Of Blood And Honey Gets An Impressive Trailer

I challenge you to watch the trailer below and remember that it's directed and written by Angelina Jolie. Yes, her name is right there near the front so you'll keep your interest, but I promise it won't be the first thing on your mind by the time you get to the end. We don't yet know if the actress's directorial debut, In The Land of Blood and Honey, is actually good, but this first trailer makes a really strong argument to give it the benefit of the doubt.  Though there's obviously a lot of battle scenes and the complicated fact that she's filming a movie in a country she's not from, in a way Jolie is starting simple, telling a basic love story against the backdrop of the Bosnian war. Then again, it's not simple at all-- In The Land of Blood and Honey is about a Bosnian Muslim woman who falls in love with her Serbian prison guard, such a controversial plot line that the movie was protested by local women's groups. But taking one look at the trailer, its elegant photography and sense of tone, seems to indicate this is much more than a sensationalistic romance with guns going off in the background. At first look, at least, Jolie seems to be really immersing herself in recreating this enormous, destructive ethnic conflict.

The film's release date has been uncertain for a while, but now FilmDistrict-- the people behind Drive and The Rum Diary-- have made plans to release it on December 23, which puts it squarely in the mix of Oscar season. Is Jolie releasing a late-breaking Best Picture contender? Or just a surprisingly good movie by an actress who's never directed before? Who knows yet, but I'm dying to find out.

With what seems like an increasing number of Hollywood stars getting behind the camera, Angelina Jolie decided to take on a major challenge for her directorial debut. For her Bosnian war love story, In The Land Of Blood And Honey, she decided to shoot two versions, one in English and the other in their native Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian language. And today we finally have our first look via a trailer.
Featuring a cast of relative unknowns here in the states, including Milos Timotijevic, Alma Terzic, Zana Marjanovic, Goran Kostic, Rade Serbedzija and Branko Djuric, Jolie’s directorial debut looks to be a bold effort. The mix of romance and war seems to be firmly tied together and more intense then expected. If this trailer was in the Bosnian language and I didn’t know who directed, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a top contender for Best Foreign Oscar. We’ll have to see how possible awards play out later this year, but one can likely see this trailer in front of FilmDistrict’s The Rum Diary next week.

Back in May we learned that Film District would be behind the release of In the Land of Blood and Honey, the directorial debut of actress Angelina Jolie. Since then the film hasn't made the rounds to any festivals or promoted itself with as so much a poster or even first look stills. Well, the film may just need to speak for itself in the first trailer that just landed which puts it in the running for plenty of Academy Awards this season. Set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War the film shows the consequences and pain that results from the lack of political will to intervene in a society stricken with conflict.

 
Angelina Jolie’s New Movie – In the Land of Blood and Honey – Looks Amazing!!

Having just recently been to both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia just over a week ago – most specifically Sarajevo where much of the destruction from the war took place – I’m highly anticipating Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut of In the Land of Blood and Honey.  The actress not only directed this epic story about the 1992 conflict between the two countries, but wrote it as well.  Yes, she really does do it all.

I was privileged enough to learn much about the history of the war and walk the path of many soldiers who lost their lives.  So you can imagine this film will have a great impact on me.  What makes it more interesting – and also what prompted a lot of distress in both countries while filming – is that the story not only touches on the violence of the war, but focus’ on a love story between a Bosnian-Muslim woman and a Serbian man who fall in love and are forced to split at the beginning of the war.

Angelina chose to cast unknown actors Goran Kostic and Zana Marjanovic and the film will be featured in both English and the Bosnia-Croatian-Serbian language.  The trailer is extremely powerful, and I urge you to watch it.  Angelina faced many obstacles to get this movie made, and her will and determination to tell a story about love and violence during an epic historical time prevailed.  The film is slated for a North American release December 23^rd and I highly recommend  a quick history recap to familiarize yourself with what happened during this time – which incredibly wasn’t all that long ago.

Judging by the trailer, I would NOT have guessed that Angelina Jolie's IN THE LAND OF BLOOD & HONEY was the work of a first-time filmmaker.
