Angelina Jolie, who arrived in Sarajevo yesterday, left the capital of Bosnia aboard a private plane from Sarajevo International Airport at about 14 hours.

The actress formally received her honorary citizenship from Prime Minister Fikret Music of the Sarajevo Canton and also opened the Sarajevo Talent Campus where she addressed young filmmakers and answered their questions.

Many had expected her to appear last night on the Sarajevo Film Festival red carpet outside the National Theater but it did not happen.

She arrived in Sarajevo with three of her children at 15:45 yesterday just in time for the scheduled 16:30 opening of the Talent Campus.

Emotional Jolie visits Sarajevo Film Festival

(Reuters) - Angelina Jolie, whose directorial debut tackled the 1992-95 Bosnian war, attended the 18th Sarajevo Film Festival on Saturday and became an honorary citizen of the Bosnian capital in recognition of her film.
"This means so much to me. My heart is in this city," said a tearful Jolie on receiving the award from Sarajevo authorities. She arrived with her three children on a private plane.
Jolie's film "In the Land of Blood and Honey" tells the story of the war through the relationship between Danijel, a Bosnian Serb, and Ajla, a Bosnian Muslim woman, whose affection becomes hostage to their respective ethnic groups.
"It was the hardest thing I have ever done because of my deep respect for the people that really experienced it. The experience here was so unique for me that I felt very connected to the people," Jolie told Reuters.
But the Oscar-winning actress, who has used her fame to draw attention to humanitarian disasters across the world, said she was hesitant about embarking on a new directorial project tackling another conflict, such as the one in Afghanistan.
"I have been writing and I'd love to try at some point to direct another film. I would like to try to learn about countries like Afghanistan but I don't know if I am the best person to make the film about the subject matter," she said.
"Unless I felt I was somebody that can really contribute, I don't think I would do it," she added.
"I think it's important for film-makers to know what they are trying to say when they make a film. If you're gonna do something about another country, make sure to surround yourself with extraordinary people from that country and really know that country and let that country speak through you. Don't try to give the country your own voice."
This is Jolie's second attendance of the festival, the largest southern European film gathering.
She also threw her support behind the Sarajevo Talent Campus programme, which gives young film talents from the region the chance to learn from established film professionals willing to share their knowledge.
The programme seeks to give writers, actors and directors access to further education, an entry to the international film industry, and an incentive to make their first joint projects with colleagues from the region.
"I hope to spread to the world to pay more attention to the artists from this region," said Jolie.
The film festival, which opened late on Friday, acts as a major regional showcase. This year it will show more than 200 movies during its nine days.
Nine feature films from Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia, Turkey, Austria and Romania are competing for the Heart of Sarajevo, the festival's main award.
Apart from Jolie, the most famous guests are Spanish actress Victoria Abril, who stars in Macedonian film "The Woman Who Brushed Off Her Tears", and American director Todd Solondz, whose films will be screened in a special retrospective programme.
Every year the festival hosts about 100,000 film fans, many from neighbouring countries, and hoteliers and tourism officials say that nearly all accommodation is booked up during the event.

Angelina Jolie has become an honorary citizen of Sarajevo at the city's film festival, in recognition of her film about Bosnia's 1992-1995 war.

Her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, tells the story of a Bosnian Muslim woman's love for a Bosnian Serb man during the war.
"This means so much to me. My heart is in this city," said a tearful Jolie when given her award.
She said her experience making the film had been life-changing.
"The time I spent and the people I met in Bosnia have changed me for ever," she said.
"I can't tell you how much it means to me to be named an honorary citizen of Sarajevo, a city so dear to my heart."
The honour was announced in April.

It was presented to her by the prime minister of the Sarajevo Canton, Fikret Music.
In the Land of Blood and Honey, which features stark scenes of rape, executions and other war crimes, was first screened in Sarajevo last December.
Some Bosnian Serbs called for the film to be banned, saying it portrayed them as villains, but others said they wanted the film to be shown.
It was nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this year for best foreign language film.
Jolie was also attending the Sarajevo Film Festival to promote young talent in Bosnia.
The festival began during the Bosnian War and has gone on to become one of the largest in Europe.

The famous American actress Angelina Jolie arrived in Sarajevo on Saturday and opened the sixth Sarajevo Talent Campus, a program designed for young filmmakers.

The first lecture in China the Meeting Point was attended by about 100 program participants: directors, screenwriters, actors, producers and film critics from 13 countries in the region.

During the one-hour meeting the Hollywood actress spoke of how her directorial debut "In the land of blood and honey" completely changed her.

"Here I met great people, friends with whom I am in touch. When I wrote the script and told the producers that I intended to engage local actors, they were skeptical. My casting director came in saying how delighted she was with the great actors she met,"said Angelina Jolie.

Speaking about her experience as director on the set, Angelina suggested to Talent Campus participants that they always ask if something is unclear.

"When we filmed the movie I didn't hesitate to ask colleagues how, for example, to frame or where to shoot a scene.

"What I'm looking for is the uniqueness of the actors. This region has really strong individuals. In America, casting has become a real business. Discipline, resourcefulness, courage are qualities that I noticed in the actors from the Balkans.

"At the same time, European films are very 'clean', they do not reveal much in the action but leave open the possibility for the audience to find out for itself what happened next. Such an approach is different from what we have in American cinema," Jolie explained.

On the question of Bosnian director Haris why she is devoted to humanitarian work, since such an approach is characteristic of most celebrities, actress replied: "I grew up in Los Angeles and hung out with people who are too worried about trivial things. I became famous early but then I didn't know how to recognize true value. I visited many countries in the world, I realized that something can be done. Charity and work has changed me as a person and artist. Being in touch with real life is something for all of us, especially artists, "she said.

US superstar Angelina Jolie, whose recent directorial debut dealt with the 1992-95 war in Bosnia, arrived here on Saturday as a special guest of the Sarajevo Film Festival.

Jolie is to be made an honorary citizen of Sarajevo during her stay, an honour that was announced in April for her part in "keeping the truth about wartime events in Sarajevo and Bosnia-Hercegovina alive".
Jolie's film "In the Land of Blood and Honey" -- shot in 2010 with several actors from the former Yugoslavia and premiered in 2011 -- dealt with the issues of war crimes committed during the war.
While the project initially sparked concern in Bosnia, once it was shown most victims' organisations welcomed it saying it had been objective and sincere.
Jolie arrived without her fiancee Brad Pitt but with at least three of their children on board a private plane at Sarajevo's airport around 1400 GMT, an AFP photographer said.
She was also due to attend a workshop for young film artists on the sidelines of the 18th Sarajevo Film Festival.
The Sarajevo Film Festival, born as an act of resistance when the Bosnian capital was under siege during the 1992-1995 war, has has grown to be one of the largest in Europe.

Not sure if this is true. As far as I can make out, the story is that a Serbian man planned to attack Angelina but the police were tipped off and they were waiting for him and surrounded him. He then tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself and paramedics arrived to save him. He never got close to her. The local papers earlier reported (below) that she would appear on the red carpet in front of the National Theater but she did not make an appearance.

Hollywood actress and director Angelina Jolie arrived in Sarajevo today to attend the 18th Sarajevo Film Festival.

Jolie, director of the film "In the Land of Blood and Honey", landed around 15:45 am today at Sarajevo airport via private jet. The Hollywood beauty arrived with three of her children, and this time was not accompanied by Brad Pitt.

Welcomed by a number of journalists and photographers who from early morning were "on duty" at the airport as they would never miss the most famous Hollywood actress. Jolie sat down after passport control in one of the few luxury cars that were waiting outside the airport and headed for the hotel Europe in the center of Sarajevo, where she will stay.

"I look forward to visiting Sarajevo in July when I can properly receive the tribute and express my gratitude," said the actress and director on that occasion.
