Alia Shawkat Is a Cult Classic

Shawkat was in New York City in December to attend the première of “Being the Ricardos,” an Aaron Sorkin project that chronicles the behind-the-scenes crises of “I Love Lucy.” (Shawkat plays one of the show’s writers.) With her signature freckles and mop of curls, Shawkat is unmissable in person, and also disarmingly frank. We spoke over breakfast about the end of “Search Party,” her friend Brad Pitt, and being half Iraqi.

You went viral in 2020 when you were spotted hanging out with Brad Pitt, and tabloids spread the rumor that you guys were dating. Is there still runoff from that moment? People still following you around, hoping to get close to Brad Pitt?

Thank God, no. It came in hot and left as fast as it came in. It happened during covid, and I was alone with it. It was so weird. Now it’s like a weird dream, where I’m, like, Did that happen?

Was he amused by it?

He had no awareness of it at all. Which is so funny. Because he doesn’t read that shit. I was, like, “You know everyone thinks we’re dating? And there’s this whole thing, and I’m being followed.” And he was, like, “I’m sorry. It happens. If you hang out with me, it happens.” He had no awareness of it at all.

But the other day I was at my grandmother’s house, my father’s mother. She’s been in this country for over thirty years and still barely speaks English. An Iraqi Muslim woman. She’s sitting there, watching her Turkish soap opera. And next to her is this old gossip magazine with Brad’s face, and my face in a small circle. And it says “Brad’s New Girl!” And then on the inside it’s old Instagram photos of me and friends at dinner. It was, like, “ALL ABOUT ALIA.” This whole made-up story about how we were healing each other by spending time together. All this crazy shit. I looked at my grandmother, like, “Why do you have this?” She’s, like, “It’s you and this movie star! And it’s your face.” I was embarrassed by it. I told her she had to throw it away. And she laughed.

At the time, were you not entertained by it at all?

At the time, it was not fun at all. I’m not an actor who has ever dealt with the paparazzi. They don’t know who the fuck I am. There’s something ironic about it. It has nothing to do with Brad as a person—he’s a great fucking guy. But of course the idea of me being romantically involved with an older white guy is what gets me the most attention. Not a twenty-year career. That’s what gets me. And it’s ironic and gross and stupid. But yeah, again, it was super brief. And I was fine. I was shaken up by it, because I have a studio in Highland Park where I go every day. And I was, like, There are these photos of me carrying way too much shit to get inside. There are all these embarrassing photos, they had followed me there. Then they just disappeared, and now they don’t give a shit.

They're clearing the floor of detritus.  Two days, 2 -- divorce and dating -- shot down in succession.  Two favorite games of tabloids and pseudo fans.  To give the tabloids credit, they never stooped down to playing the tattoo game as the pseudos have.

Shawkat landed her first film role in Three Kings alongside Spike Jonze at 9, after announcing to her mom that she wanted to become an actress; by age 12, she was the star of her own ABC Family series, the sweet YA drama State of Grace. When Shawkat reconnected with Jonze at a movie premiere a few years ago, the two struck up a friendship and he introduced her to Pitt. “We just became friends, and Brad introduced me to his group of friends, and it grew from there,” she says.

Alia Shawkat, an actress, painter and outspoken member of the LGBTQ community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) was seen talking to Brad at the art exhibit and having dinner with him afterwards at David Chang's Korean-fusion Majordomo.  That was enough to get desperate pseudo fans to initiate a ridiculous effort to link Alia romantically to Brad and forward it to sites like Lainey and Jared that post anything for clicks.  Marion Cotillard, Sienna Miller, Kate Hudson, Charlize Theron, Sat Hari and Neri Oxman should send Alia Shawkat a card welcoming her to the club.  "Dating Brad" has now become a big joke -- and the joke is on those who keep concocting and spreading these stories.  The public has grown wise to the fact that any woman Brad is seen talking to immediately becomes fair game .  Not only has "Brad dating" lost its potency as click bait, it now has people laughing.  Brad sounds weary and impatient after having to repeatedly issue denials (via People): "A source close to Pitt insists, 'They are absolutely just friends.'” 

Alia came out as "queer" in a May 2017 interview in Out.  Before that, she dated Jack Antanoff for a year in 2009, and Michael Angarano for a year in 2011.  While Alia said she considers herself bisexual and that balancing her male and female energies allowed her to grow as an actor, all other references -- Ellen Page, Portia de Rossi and Ellen De Generes, and the characters in the film she co-wrote -- are unequivocally lesbian.  In the Out interview,  she said she loved how her film ended up having two women as lovers and that she is now being more outspoken as a member of the LGBTQ.   The above should have precluded any attempt to concoct a romance but facts and common sense never get in the way of those intent on sleaze.  Brad being with Alia is like Brad being with Thomas Houseago.  Based on all available info, Alia would probably be more attracted to Angelina.

Fans who could not be bothered to check facts dug up that Alia was also seen leaving the opening night after party of Ethan Coen's play.  The paps had claimed that multiple autograph seekers confirmed it was Neri Oxman but they could not provide any photo of Brad signing autographs with Alia/Neri beside him.  The paps also claimed that Brad, Alia and presumably the gentleman she was with whom they cropped out in other photos left in the same car -- but again had no photos to show.  When Brad was photographed arriving and leaving the play, Alia was nowhere in sight.  Their hot date was apparently only for the after party and not the play itself.  This was just 3 days after the paps similarly claimed that Brad left the Ad Astra after party with Sat Hari -- "The couple were seen looking happy as they exited" even though she was not with him when he left and they were photographed at different spots.  There is obviously a big disconnect between the paps' claims and their photos but those are minor details to the sleazy.  

Alia is also very fond of tattoos.  According to Body Art Guru and Inked Celeb, Alia's tattoos include an Acorn inside a triangle, a tattoo of the animated character Mister Jones, the word "MUTANT," another "Mister Jones" tattoo, "Mister Baby" on her left shoulder, what looks like a Chakra on the back of her right elbow and "lurker" on her left.  Among Alia's dozen odd tattoos the pseudo fans also "saw" a star and immediately linked it to Brad's new star -- because of course tattoo afficionados very rarely have stars -- never mind that Alia also begins with an "A".

The small subset of fans I refer to as pseudo fans and others call haters are not just desperate, they are also blind and delusional.  They abandon even the modicum of common sense and make little effort to check facts.  Their energy would have been better expended on more constructive efforts that could have boosted Maleficent MoE's and Ad Astra's receipts instead of likely hurting them.  Sleazy, lazy, idiotic garbage is a waste of everyone's time and everything from those who post garbage forthwith goes straight to trash.  Once anyone loses credibility, once I lose respect for them -- whether a fan or rabble-rousers fishing for clicks like Lainey, I don't bother with them again.

As her new thriller, Paint It Black, hits theaters, the Arrested Development alumnus gets candid about being a queer, female actor of color.
How do you identify with these characters?
I was a tomboy growing up, and I remember my mom asking me when I was 10, “Are you attracted to boys or girls?” I said I don’t know. Now I consider myself bisexual, and I think balancing my male and female energies has been a big part of me growing as an actor.
Did working with Portia de Rossi on Arrested Development help shape your identity?
Portia started dating Ellen DeGeneres during the show’s first three seasons, and I’d met her previous girlfriend, but I think my influences are more from growing up in Los Angeles and being exposed to lots of gay artists.
How do you feel in the current climate, moving forward as a queer artist?
I co-wrote and star in a new film called Duck Butter, which opens later this year. I love that it was written for a man and a woman, but we couldn’t find the right guy, so now it happens to star two women [as lovers]. I used to be less outspoken. But as a woman, an Arab-American, and a member of the LGBTQ community, I have to use whatever voice I have. There’s no more delicacy in being quiet.

I would guess the large plane that picked up the Shiloh, Zahara, Knox and Vivienne on Nov. 11 from Fuerteventura then proceeded to the South of France to pick up Brad and Pax before heading to L.A.  They may have had custody evaluation interviews with Dr. Katz to see if enough progress has been achieved between Brad and the kids for the temporary judgement on custody and visitation to be set aside.

Nov. 4.  CDG.  What little can be seen could possibly be Pax.  Or it could be someone who happens to be Pax's height, also with straight black hair swept back, and also very tanned.  The rest of the kids arrived in Fuerteventura on or after Oct. 26.  Pax was not seen with Brad at a Springfield, MO airport Nov. 2, the day of the OUATIH Q&A.
