On Wednesday, Jolie, who was a United Nations special envoy for refugees between 2012 and 2022, renewed her commitment to the cause. On social media, local official Vitaly Bogdanov shared photos of the star wearing a bulletproof vest emblazoned with the logo of the Legacy of War Foundation, an organization helping civilians affected by the conflict.

Jolie arrived in Ukraine as part of a humanitarian aid program and has visited a number of medical facilities in the region, including a maternity hospital and a children’s hospital, reported the Kyiv Post, citing local media and Telegram channels. According to Politico, a senior official said that Jolie had not informed the Ukrainian government of her visit and entered the country on foot.

The official told Politico that a member of Jolie’s team had “an incident” at a checkpoint with local military recruiters. The Ukrainian Ground Forces released a statement saying that Jolie’s driver had been detained at a checkpoint and was in the process of being drafted into the army, but later deleted it and told Politico they could neither confirm nor deny details of what happened.

The photo of the year: Angelina Jolie in an anti-drone tunnel. Thanks to Jolie, the world now knows: Kherson, a Ukrainian city, lives on, one mile away from the front, under non-stop short-range drone attacks. Much gratitude.

A surprise visit to Ukraine by actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie drew scrutiny of her companions, with multiple sources claiming a member of her entourage was unexpectedly drafted into the Ukrainian military.

A top Ukrainian official told POLITICO that a member of Jolie’s traveling party had an incident with local military recruiters at a checkpoint, but that the Ukrainian authorities are still trying to figure out what has exactly happened. The official also told POLITICO that Jolie had not informed the Ukrainian government about her intention to visit the country, and that she entered on foot.

Separately, the Ukrainian Army Land Forces shared a four-paragraph statement offering numerous details of the incident, including that the person drafted was Jolie’s driver, but later deleted their statement and told POLITICO they could neither confirm or deny details of what happened.

They did say: “The information being spread in the media is distorted, an investigation is currently underway and all the circumstances are being clarified.”

The regional military recruitment offiсe in Mykolaiv confirmed the incident to POLITICO, saying that Jolie’s driver was a military reservist and was ordered to come to military retraining.

It is unclear whether the driver was immediately sent to retraining or will have to submit himself at a later time.

A representative for Jolie declined to comment on the record.
