A family's longhouse starts with one room -- the parent's room -- and they keep adding rooms as they have children. "So now we're seven across" i.e. they have seven rooms = parent's room + 6 kids' rooms. When the kids get married, they and their spouses will still initially have their one room until there are grandkids, at which time they could start another longhouse. Their homes in Briarcliff, DeMille and Miraval would have a similar setup -- as do most large family homes. A very simple concept to grasp that should not even need an explanation -- but for those with eye-rolling stupidity.
