If Angelina Jolie is going to put her name on an animated movie, it’s a safe bet there’s going to be some depth and an important message in there.
The Breadwinner (in theaters Nov. 17) spins an inspiring tale of a family in Afghanistan with a dash of women’s rights for a sense of timeliness. The new trailer for the PG-13 film debuts exclusively at usatoday.com.

Executive produced by Jolie and directed by Nora Twomey, the movie centers on 11-year-old Parvana (voiced by Saara Chaudry), who lives under Taliban rule in war-torn Kabul. Her father is wrongfully arrested, which leaves his family without a way to make any money since women are prohibited from leaving their home without a male relative. So Parvana cuts her hair short and wears her brother’s clothes, making her the family's sole provider but also giving her a freedom she's never enjoyed before. She also has to figure out where her dad is and rescue him.

Fun fact: Twomey co-directed 2009’s Oscar-nominated The Secret of Kells. With its dramatic gravitas (and an A-lister involved), The Breadwinner might be a player come awards season, too.
