Director Angelina Jolie discusses First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers

September 22, 2017 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

The Cambodian genocide is recalled through the eyes of a five-year-old girl in Director Angelina Jolie’s new drama, First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers.
Based on the memoir by Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung, Jolie’s film recounts the story of how Ung embarked on a harrowing quest for survival after the Khmer Rouge assumed power over Cambodia and undertook a four-year reign of terror that resulted in the deaths of nearly 2 million of her countrymen.
Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on September 22, Jolie sat down with Director Jeremy Kagan (Shot) to discuss the making of First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers.
In addition to First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, Jolie’s credits include the feature films By the Sea, Unbroken and In the Land of Blood and Honey and the documentary A Place in Time. Jolie has been a DGA member since 2013.

Thanks Pride&Joy

First Remembered They First Killed My Father
More than a quarter of the Cambodian population died during the Khmer Rouge colonial rule. This is one of the cruelest genocide of humanity.
A family of military officers, whose status is considered better than the Cambodian people at that time. Parents are living together. There are rice fish food to eat full. There are beautiful clothes. Have a nice house with a car, but then when the political changes that the backhand. Everything that has ever been turned into no. Not only because of the worse things, but because of the lack of wealth.
All stories were conveyed through the wire of a girl who was forced into a concentration camp with her family and was working hard. The living is so poorly desperate, the disease is near. It's not just the life that is called the poor but the oppressed life, so hardly any place to stand anymore. Although this girl is not old enough to understand what's going on with her life and family, it's not hard to understand that this is the worst thing that ever happened to her. The life of a girl
The movie chose to convey the story of this unlucky girl through a straightforward way in which a child could think or understand the events of the moment. Especially in some scenes that use the camera instead of the girl's eyes so that we can see the same person she sees. This makes us understand the feelings of the characters more. Personally, I like this presentation very much, because even though it looks normal, it can make a good mood. In addition, scenes or works can be made very well. All in all, the authentic atmosphere of Phnom Penh before the Khmer Rouge capture made no sense at all.
At the same time, the performances of Cambodian actors in the story is also very important as well, because it feels that everyone plays out naturally, realistic, especially the child actor who is doing better than expected. This is called the play is not played, it may be that this may have to see the staff and director Angelina Jolie that can make these actors can play out well.
And this makes Angelina Jolie turned into an actor who turns into a movie director who is doing well. It is not known whether this film has a story about Cambodia or not, so the film came out as well because it was adopted by Cambodian descent, and it seems to be bound to this country quite a lot since that time. I used to film Lara Croft Tomb Raider a long time ago. But that was not the point to take a measure of her craft, because the movie before that, Unbroken is well done as well. But after watching this latest movie, it must have been Joe's favorite directing film.

  8. Angelina Jolie’s Secret Weapon: ‘First They Killed My Father’ Producer Rithy Panh Helped a Hollywood A-Lister Tell Cambodia’s Story
Angelina Jolie may be a global celebrity, but she’s also a Cambodian citizen, and that balance was essential when she directed “First They Killed My Father,” Netflix’s drama about the experiences of a young girl whose family was torn apart by the Khmer Rouge. While Jolie’s citizenship helped the movie become Cambodia’s Oscar submission this fall, the film was aided by another key figure whose work thrives far from Hollywood — producer Rithy Panh.

Cinephiles have celebrated Panh’s work for decades. The filmmaker, who lost much of his family in the Khmer Rouge genocide, has chronicled modern Cambodian life with a range projects that blur the line between fiction and documentary. His 2013 film “The Missing Picture” combined personal recollections of his family with stop-motion animation to create a thoroughly modern meditation on the reverberations of the past in the present. “She didn’t come to make the film about us,” he said in a phone interview, “but to make a film with us.”

In early financing stages, Panh said there was some discussion about making the film in English in the hopes of securing more funding. Jolie was opposed to it — and that, Panh said, convinced him of her credentials to tell this story. “Angelina would not have done the film in English,” he said. “We live in this global time where, if you want to make a big film, you have to put a Chinese or American actor in it. She made the film in our language, with our people.”

Unfortunately, that decision led to a whole new challenge when Jolie discussed a widely criticized child casting process in Vanity Fair, in which casting directors placed money on a table and coached the actors to snatch it away. Speaking of Srey Moch, who eventually nabbed the lead role, Jolie said, “When she was forced to give [the money] back, she became overwhelmed with emotion.” Later, Jolie criticized the magazine for mischaracterizing what she called “a pretend exercise in improvisation.” (Vanity Fair stood by its story.) Asked about the backlash to that story, Panh took Jolie’s side. “I was there, and I would not harm a child for any film,” he said. “Not for Angelina Jolie, not for anyone. I think this was a misunderstanding. I was there every day, even during the casting. We asked for permission even when we took their pictures. We always explained during the acting that this was fiction, not reality. It’s not like we were hiding the camera.”

"First They Killed My Father" is a brilliantly added dose of levity to 2017. Angelina Jolie is able to capture some resonating moments of emotion that reign hauntingly authentic. Her direction mirrors that of the perception of our most important character and captures these events through the innocent eyes of a child. Innocent eyes that act more as a metaphorical representation of the title than the literal tragedy of a death. It's a little long with its runtime for me though, despite that flaw, Angelina Jolie's "First They Killed My Father" is a brilliant example of foreign filmmaking at its best as Angelina Jolie places her name in contention for the best female filmmaker working today. #filmmaking #filmreview #filmcritic #firsttheykilledmyfather #angelinajolie #netflix #netflixoriginal #foreignfilm
