Malta has a rich history as a favored location for movie production, and more recently has been seen on “Game of Thrones.”  However, its starring role is likely coming in November.  That’s when “By the Sea,” featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, hits the big screen.  It was the site of the first movie they filmed together since “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” in 2005 and served as their de facto working honeymoon last year. Tabloids regularly ran pictures of the the Jolie-Pitts either on location, or touring the islands during breaks. So, if you want to get a jump on your friends, and see where their upcoming flick was filmed and partake in some of the activities the famous couple did, the Malta Tourism Authority shared some reasons to pay a visit.
But don’t expect to be alone. Paul Bugeja, CEO of the tourist board, told via email, ” A movie like ‘By the Sea’, as well as the film industry in general, leaves a large positive economic impact on the Maltese Islands.  The film industry provides a great advert for our Islands, as people get to see and learn about our Islands through scenes seen in a film.”  He calls it “ screen tourism,” and it’s something many destinations have tried to work since Paul Hogan as Crocodile Dundee provided a spark for Australia in the ’80s.
Bugeja is expecting a bump from the new film.  He cites, that currently 3.5 percent of the tourists that visit did so because of a scene which impressed them from a film shot in Malta.
