This week Eric Kohn and I have finally caught up with all the major awards contenders--with Top Ten lists to be unveiled next Friday, we both have catching up to do on smaller films, but the big players have landed.
So what's the verdict? In short, we were both disappointed by Ridley Scott's paint-by-numbers biblical epic "Exodus: Gods and Kings," and hail the rise of director Angelina Jolie, who delivers with "Unbroken" and rising star Jack O'Connell. Could her cinematographer, frequent Coens collaborator Roger Deakins, finally land the Big O after 11 nominations? After all, "Birdman" D.P. Emmanuel Lubezki won last year for "Gravity."
We also dig into some other categories and races as well as the Sundance lineup so far and recommend what you should watch this weekend.
