With $1.5M from Thursday, Maleficent's domestic total now stands at $207.7.  If it makes $6.2M for the weekend as projected by boxoffice.com, it will be just $5.5M behind Oz and $9.5M behind X-Men at the same point after release.  Oz's lead over Maleficent at one point had been as high as $16M (on day 10), while X-Men's lead peaked at $36M (on day 6).  Maleficent is on pace to overtake both within two weeks. 

Sometime next week, Maleficent will be Angelina's highest grossing film, live action or animated, as it eclipses Kung Fu Panda ($215.43M).

Maleficent drops out of the top 5 this weekend so its not included in the early box office reports.  22  Jump St. and Dragon 2 are basically tied for 5th

FOURTH OF JULY 5-DAY WEEKEND: THURSDAY PM, 3RD UPDATE - A strengthening Hurricane Arthur is forcing thousands to abandon their Independence Day plans along the East Coast from North Carolina northward because of high winds and rains. I’ll keep watch how it affects the holiday box office. Of course Paramount’s uber-holdover Transformers: Age Of Extinction (4,233 theaters) is still #1 by a healthy margin with $7.7M Wednesday and extends its lead with $9.7M (+25%) Thursday. Michael Bay’s PG pic should have a 1st week cume of $138.3M by Friday and of course it’ll lead for the 5-day Fourth Of July weekend. (The visual headaches and aural ear-popping are free.) Expect a worldwide total of $650M for this autobots vs humans vs dinobots battling through Sunday. Yowza! The two R-rated of the three films opening Wednesday were scorched by terrible reviews which may be hurting their grosses this coming holiday weekend. Full analysis on Friday.
2.  Warner Bros/New Line’s unfunny Tammy (which scored only 25% positive on Rotten Tomatoes) is Melissa McCarthy’s alleged comedy directed by her husband Ben Falcone.  This is the first movie she’s carrying virtually alone. Uh-oh. It made  a meh $6.1M on Wednesday and dropped-10% for $5.5M Thursday. But a Warner Bros executive assured me confidently, "We’re opening very well, running ahead of We’re The Miller’s that grossed $37.9M in its first 5 days and $150M all in." (That was another summer laugher rated R from the same studio. But previous McCarthy movies won over both critics and audiences.) Tammy  is playing in 3,465 theaters and its C+ Cinemascore from audiences won’t help word of mouth.
3. Sony Pictures/Screen Gems Deliver Us From Evil (30% positive on Rotten Tomatoes) is being derided as a derivative horror movie. Playing 3,045 theaters is earned a B- Cinemascore and made only $2.8M on Wednesday and squeaked by with a $2.6M (-8%) on Thursday. Look for it to place 4th by Friday and for the weekend.
4. Relativity Films’ ET wannabe Earth To Echo received opening better treatment from reviewers (53% positive on Rotten Tomatoes).  The PG-rated kiddie pic playing in 3,230 theaters started with $2.6M Wednesday and another $2.6M Thursday. Look for it to move up a slot Friday through Sunday.
5. Sony?Columbia Pictures’ 22 Jump Street (Week 4 – 3,324 theaters) added $1.9M on Wednesday and $2.5M (+26%) on Thursday for a Friday cume of $149.5M
6. DreamWorks Animation/Fox’s How To Train Your Dragon 2  (Week 4 – 3,297 theaters) made $1.9M on Wednesday and $2.5M (+26%) on Thursday for a Friday cume of $131.3M.
