Behind-the-Scenes at the Maleficent Premiere With Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (and the Drama That Ensued)
by Jessica Radloff
By all accounts, it was just another
premiere. And by just another premiere, I mean the biggest,
most-anticipated premiere of the summer: Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning.
That would have been enough. But thanks to an obnoxious "reporter" who
is known for crashing Hollywood's biggest events, it turned into a much
bigger affair than anyone could have imagined (apparently this
individual attacked Brad Pitt just as he and Angelina arrived to greet
fans). I was there, and here's what went down:
4:45 P.M. Guests of the premiere start to arrive and are given replica Maleficent horns. (Note: This is not a good look on me. Angelina Jolie's cheekbones are required.)
5 P.M.
The red carpet, which is actually midnight blue, opens for arrivals,
and every journalist, celeb, and publicist who chose to dress in black
(to pay homage to Maleficent) regrets it as soon as the temps hit 90 degrees.
5:20 P.M. Maddox Jolie-Pitt walks the portion of the red carpet typically reserved for executives and guests (code for those who aren't doing interviews) and nearly everyone misses him.
5:40 P.M. Rowan Blanchard (Cory and Topanga's daughter on Girl Meets World) arrives (no doubt to drum up press for the June 27 Disney Channel premiere), while Dancing With the Stars' Karina Smirnoff soon follows.
5:53 P.M. Modern Family's Sarah Hyland chats with E!'s Giuliana Rancic in the color of the evening: black and white!
6:00 P.M. Elle Fanning (who plays Princess Aurora) arrives in a stunning ice blue gown by Elie Saab as she talks to Nancy O'Dell at Entertainment Tonight. "It's so princess-y!" she's overheard telling reporters.
6:24 P.M. Hollywood's hottest couple arrives! Angelina Jolie (in Versace) walks arm-in-arm with Brad Pitt to greet the crowd before hitting the carpet.
6:28 P.M. Shouts of "Angie! Angie! Angie!" sweep through the crowd along Hollywood Blvd hoping to get an up close glimpse of the star.
6:30-6:40 P.M. For approximately 10-12 minutes, Angelina and Brad are nowhere in sight. At the time, those of us near the front assume that they've gone to sign autographs for fans, but it's relatively quiet if that's the case. No one can figure out where they've gone, especially given that the movie's screening is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Later on, it's revealed that celebrity prankster, Vitalii Sediuk???, of the Ukraine, has allegedly attacked Brad Pitt. Sediuck is the same man who tried to kiss Will Smith on the red carpet a few years ago, crashed the Grammys last year, and recently tried to hide under American Ferrera's dress at Cannes. Thankfully, Brad was not hurt, but it remains to be known if he was going to do interviews with Angelina prior to the incident (she did them herself after posing for photos with Brad on the carpet).
6:41 P.M.
Angelina's father, Jon Voight, arrives to support his daughter (as well
as his granddaughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, who makes her film debut!),
but pauses to answer a phone call before speaking to outlets.
6:48 P.M.
With 12 minutes until the premiere is supposed to begin, Angelina gives
her first interview to the Disney house crew. Brad has already gone
inside. Angelina is composed and collected after the scary run-in and
makes no mention of the ordeal during her interview with The Insider's Thea Andrews.
6:52 P.M. Angelina stuns up close with her Maleficent-inspired
look. To re-create the look yourself, MAC has launched a
limited-edition color collection in specially designed packaging. You
can check that out here.
6:54 P.M. Angelina poses with guests dressed as Maleficent. Impressive!
6:58 P.M. Angelina talks to Liz Hernandez at Access Hollywood
and tells her that daughter Vivienne was like her shadow while filming
their scene together. Meanwhile, take a look at her fierce accessories
to complement her engagement ring!
And the bottom portion of her dress...so Maleficent-esque, don't you think?
7:06 P.M. While speaking to Giuliana Rancic at E!, Angelina shouts to the fans, "Thank you for coming!"
7:12 P.M. Angelina Jolie joins Elle Fanning and the rest of the Maleficent cast for a group photo. At this point I am almost run over by photographers.
7:45 P.M. The film screening finally begins. All six of Brad and Angelina's kids are in the El Capitan theater with them.
8:25 P.M.
Vivienne Jolie-Pitt appears on screen for the first time, and the
audience falls in love. I don't want to give away the scene with between
her and Angelina, but it's worth the price of admission alone.
9:25 P.M. The audience at the El Capitan (made up primarily of Disney executives, the cast, crew, and media) gives the film a much-deserved round of applause. Take my word, you guys are going to love it.
9:35 P.M. Angelina and Vivienne are seen making their way through the lobby of the El Capitan to a side exit. Angelina sweetly says to a youngster nearby, "Shiloh's still here. She's around!" Meanwhile, a sleepy Viv (with what looks like face paint on the left side of her face) is ready for bed!
9:45 P.M. Disney sets up an exhibit with actual costumes from the film. Incredible!

Following Angelina and Brad down the Chaotic 'Maleficent' Red Carpet
At last night’s enormous Maleficent Hollywood premiere, the usual showbiz pageantry was upset when Ukrainian journalist Vitalii Sediuk leaped over a barrier and made contact with Brad Pitt’s face.
Details of the incident are still unclear, though it’s unlikely that he
punched or slapped the actor; that’s not the modus operandi of the same
serial red-carpet troublemaker who tried to kiss Will Smith, hugged
Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio, and climbed under America
Ferrara’s dress at Cannes. (He’s been booked for suspicion of batter,
and is currently being held on $20,000 bail.) Yahoo photo editor Giana
Mucci was roaming the event with a camera, and to see her close-up
photos is to get an idea of just how daunting it must be to be the focus
of a red carpet; even when nobody leaps over the barricade, it is an
evening of barely controlled chaos and invaded personal space. I know, I
know: Boo hoo, celebrities, with your movie star problems. And
yet the photo timeline below gives a glimpse of how overwhelming it can
be to be the object of that much wide-eyed adulation in a tiny space.
(Note: Mucci did not catch the actual Sediuk incident, just the
aftermath.)

6:24 p.m.
Brad and Angelina begin their
walk down Hollywood Blvd. toward the El Capitan theater. Fans (and the
inevitable “REPENT! FOLLOW JESUS!” sign-waving opportunist) crowd the
sidewalks. The head of security told Mucci that Brangelina fans had
shown up to secure a spot as early as 1 p.m. the previous afternoon;
that was earlier than even Marvel obsessives, who usually don’t arrive
at superhero premieres until the morning of. At this point the stars
have room to breathe, though that won’t last long.

6:26 p.m.
A quick photo op with a group of girls doing Maleficent cosplay (Pitt, who was nearby yells, “You guys look great!”) Adorable, and also well contained.

6:28 p.m.
At this point, the couple, hand
in hand, wade into the fan area, a tunnel of barricades that puts them
right next to the swarm of onlookers. It’s like looking up at a cresting
wave of to-be-autographed posters, selfie-craving cell phones, and
hands grasping for contact.

The selfie is the new autograph; it is the fan’s proof of celebrity contact, and the perfect Twitter profile background.

There is no way to know how many of these photos and calendars, once autographed, will be given a treasured spot in a bedroom, and how many will go on eBay. And yet Jolie gamely maintains a smile as she signs much of it, pressed between this bottomless conveyor belt of glossy prints and her wall of security people.

This is when things start to get chaotic. It’s hard to judge a person’s mood by one captured frame, but it seems like the onslaught in this tight area is starting to make Jolie a little uneasy. Also, look at the size of the posters being pushed forward; it’s like the requests are just getting bigger, not smaller.

6:51 p.m.
This is right after Sediuk
jumped out at Pitt, who had wandered away from Jolie. Pitt stands behind
his bodyguards, and you can see Sediuk’s red pant leg and shoe sticking
up on the left as the other security guards wrestle him away. Fans snap
pictures of the melee, while some are still holding out their prints: Yeah, yeah, so he jumped out at you — this Fight Club promo picture isn’t going to sign itself! (The fact that this is all happening under a Hooters sign does not help add any dignity to the proceedings.)

To be a superstar is to be able
to shake such things off and continue to service the fans. It’s
impressive that even after the attack, Pitt (the top of whose gelled
head you can see behind the blue-shirted photographer) does not rush
away. If this had just happened to you, and then you turned around to
see disembodied arms pushing calendars through a hedge at you, wouldn’t
you consider saying, “This is too surreal, I’m getting out of here”?

6:54 p.m.
Brad and Angelina emerge from
the fan zone, and Jolie is greeted by drag Maleficent. Is Angelina more
thrilled because it’s a creative costume homage, or because this man is
not waving a calendar or cell phone at her?

7:12 p.m.
Back to the Maleficent
backdrop, here Jolie posts with her castmates (L to R: Juno Temple,
Lesley Manville, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, and Sam Riley). The photo
ops finished, she ran out to give the fans one more wave, and was swept
into the theater, thus concluding the hour of signing, smiling, posing,
and being pawed at. Celebrity duty accomplished.
