Brad Pitt Set To Promote ‘Allied’ In China, Ending Two-Decade ‘Ban’

Brad Pitt is set to visit China to promote his upcoming World War II thriller Allied (间谍同盟), effectively ending an unspoken ban on the actor after he angered Chinese officials by appearing in the 1997 film Seven Years In Tibet (西藏七年).

Pitt is expected to promote the Paramount film in Shanghai November 13-16, a week before its day-and-date release on November 23, according to local media reports citing the film’s producers.

Pitt dipped his toe back into the world’s second-largest film market in 2013 when he established an account on Weibo — China’s most popular microblogging platform —  only for the account to be mysteriously deactivated less than a month later.

The 52-year-old actor remained persona non grata in China until he accompanied his then-wife, actress Angelina Jolie on a press junket for her 2014 film Maleficent (沉睡魔咒). The Allied promotion will be the first time the actor has come to promote one of his own films.

Press tours of China have become more common as the country’s box office has grown in size. The stars of recent Paramount films including Tom Cruise for Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (侠探杰克:永不回头) and the main cast of Star Trek Beyond (星际迷航3: 超越星辰) have visited China in recent months, although neither of those two promo tours appeared to boost their respective films.
Pitt’s rehabilitation is not completely unexpected, especially considering Frenchman Jean-Jacques Annaud, who directed Seven Years In Tibet, has already made Wolf Totem (狼图腾), backed by state-run China Film Group.

China considers Tibet part of its sovereign territory and has accused Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama of seeking independence for the region.

Performers such as pop singer Selena Gomez and band Maroon 5 have had tours of China cancelled, with many linking social media posts made by the stars featuring the Dalai Lama as the reason for the cancellations.

The announcement of Pitt’s impending visit to China came as Paramount Pictures released a Chinese poster of Pitt and Cotillard getting close.

It also comes on the heels of an announcement last week by Chinese film production and marketing company Huahua Media that it would invest in the film, which is set to screen in 2D and China Giant Screen formats.

Allied is one of the year’s most anticipated films and we are very pleased to continue our very successful partnership with Huahua, who will help to bring this fantastic movie to audiences throughout China” Paramount’s President of Worldwide Distribution and Marketing Megan Colligan said in a statement.

“We are looking forward to yet another partnership with Paramount Pictures for Allied. Our sole investment marks Huahua Media’s third worldwide investment, following our co-investments in Star Trek Beyond and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Based on the success of our past releases, we anticipate a positive response from moviegoers in China,” Huahua CEO Kefei Wang said.

  1. Every poster for that movie is airbrushed to hell and back and the recent trailer I saw on tv looked like it has some weird instagram filter ... They should've just hired a younger actor instead of doing all the distracting post work.

The schedule was most likely planned long before he was caught abusing his family.

  2. Dude, we get it. You HATE Brad Pitt.

Do I think Pitt is an a*hole for breaking his family's heart? Of course! But he's still Jolie's husband and the father of her children so I'm not going website to website and talk sh_t about him. I'm not going to watch this film because I haven't been watching movies on theaters for months but of course I'll still root for it to do good - I'm sure Jolie is also rooting for him - for the success of this movie and for his progress in life personally.

  4. This doe not sound like a good idea to me. It does not look good on Brad to be out of the country laughing on premieres when he`s being under investigation for child abuse. But whatever, Brad makes his own choices and then he`ll have to live with them. If I was him I would stay out of the public eye focus on the investigation and healing my family. It`s all about priority.

  5. I doubt this was his decision to make the man is contractually obligated to promote this movie. I'm sure he would rather not be in another country when his personal life is in shambles well at least I hope. He does look old on the movie poster they shouldn't have done that much photoshopping.

  6. Fiorella, Brad is under contractual obligations with Paramount to do the promotions and he's teh main chacater so him not promoting it is very unlikly . Personal dramas happen look at Bebn Affleck and his nanny gate yet he still was obliged to promote Supreman Vs Batman.I think it depends if CPS and DCFS allow him to go aborad then its ok. Sadly the timing coudnt have been better due to his own created personal Drama but studios don't care they expolit it to their own advantage.

    1. He`s Brad Pitt, one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. He`s not just any other actor. If he did not wanted to promote this movie he wouldn`t. What happen to Ben Affleck it`s different. He cheated on his wife and they divorce because of it. It`s wrong but it happens all the time in Hollywood. The situation that Brad put himself and his family in is much much more serious. I mean a few of his children are afraid to be around him. It`s not the time to premieres and promo for movies.

    2. I know what you are saying , but what I was saying about Ben was that despite all the shit storm he was still made to promote by the studios and he's the same level as Brad . I know Brads situation is far worse compared to Ben's mere cheating and I respect that but who knows what Brad is thinking and doing. Personally speaking If I were Brad, I'd tell the studio I can't do it even if the DCFS and CPS allow him to travel I would pull out of all promotions all together and concentrate in healing the whole family and myself.
Again we don't know the real truth of this messy situation.Lets hope Brad gets his priorities right and don't chose anything meaningless over his family.

    3. Love, I understand where you are coming from and I agree but Brad showing up laughing and not wearing his wedding ring -I`m sure he`ll not be wearing it - at a premiere on the other side of the world it`s not a good look for him but more important think of the older kids. They all have phones and they will see those pics. These kids are going through the most difficult and confusing time in their life they need to feel secure that for the parents the most important thing is the family unit. And Brad being in china promoting a movie doesn`t send this message.

    4. Well lets wait and see what happens when he goes there wedding ring or not, he know's his every action from now is going to be scrutinized him and his PR are not that naive.I respect what you are saying Fiorella, that's why I was saying I hope he makes the excuse to the studio that he can't do it due to DCFS you know make any excuse and actually just concentrate on his family healing like his wife is doing. Fan's will pick sides and say same will go for Angelina when she promotes FTKMF you know she will be put through the same media and fan scrutiny but million times more.

    5. I agree with you Fiorella. Dreading to see Brad's appearance, myself. But I wonder...will he be his usual handsome happy self, or will he appear as a man living in crisis for six weeks. Has all this taken an obvious toll physically. If so, does that bode well for promotion?

Anybody know projected numbers? I'm thinking OW takes a hit, but I don't know that.

  7. Business is business and it involves a lot of money. In my opinion he can focus on his family even while promoting a film, just go there do his job and go back home. I don't see a problem of him showing up and selling his movie, after all life goes on and he has to work. Although I don't know how DCFS works, if they allow him to leave the country while being under investigation.

  8. Yes, life goes on, but he doesn't have to work. He is rich enough to take a break if he wants. If he puts out a statement that he is focusing on getting better for his family, no one would take that against him. Actually, people would applaud him. It is his choice.

    1. If he can do that, I will respect and applaud him. But if he goes I will also understand.

    2. Brad never does public statemenst as much as people want him to do so, that will never happen as far as he is concerend he's never done it in the past he won'rt be doing it now despite all this drama.Even his parents and brother have shut everything down.

    3. Agree with you Marianne. A premiere wouldn't take long. He could be there a day or two and fly back to focus on the mess he got himself into. Sure being on a red carpet promoting a film at this moment will got people question his act but the film involve other people too and not just himself. I prefer him staying but if he goes, I'll understand his obligation.

  9. I almost forgot his co-star is pregnant so she may not be able to fly there for the premiere he can't rely on her to promote it by herself. He either has to go or they would have to cancel the premiere in China.

    1. She's already in US and I don't think she has any issues flying at the moment she will be in China with him.

  10. I get what you mean, Fiorella, all except the wedding ring thing. All the children are aware that their parents are getting a divorce, so I don't see why that (him not wearing a ring) would be a surprise or shock to them.

    1. Sara, one thing it`s to know that your parents are getting divorce and another thing it`s coming to terms with it or even accept it. It`s all too soon and they are all young kids. And as most kids even after everything they`ve gone through I`m sure they don`t want their parents to divorce. It`s a difficult time for them. Image all the articles of Brad not wearing his wedding ring. The older kids will read some of it. And I have no doubt it will be hurtful to them. But what do I know? Brad will do what he wants to do. Hopefully it`s the right thing for his family. Because they all been through enough.

    2. I'm surprised, Brads his parents and siblings are quite. I'd think they'd come out and support but they remain distances even their grandchildren could have have supported JP kids.

    3. Wedding ring or not, he has Angelina tatooed all over his body! :)

  11. I agree that it must be such a difficult time for them, even though, we don't acctually know what is going on in the family right now. The one you thing you said is really true - Brad will do what he wants to do. Hopefully it's the right thing for his family.

  12. No matter how big the star is, its in their contract to help promote a film in some form. How much promoting of the film the actor does is where they may have some input but if they fail to do promotion, he can be sued by the producers/studio. Fact is, its a business contract that agreed to. The film is a day-and-date release so if anything I can see 1 premiere in the US and then you have the China premier for the International side, not much else due to how its being released would be really required.
