Random Fuzzy Thoughts

In one corner:  "Her family is broken and she is in agony".  "... is devastated that it has come to this, but will do everything in her power to protect her family"

In the other:  "He's so torn up and shattered", "wrecked", "“He is completely devastated and beside himself.   He is a shattered man, "... has been crying", "He’s extremely upset"

After the initial shock and anger had subsided, the far deeper, sharper pain from what they have lost and further stand to lose may push them to be more open and reflective.

A family member (her brother?) said to People, "Her children are recovering from the events that brought about the filing of the divorce.  Her focus is on their health and emotional well-being."

Their healing will also speed her own.

As we reported, Angelina wants sole physical custody of the kids. A source connected with Angelina says this is not about alcohol ... she would never leave Brad if it was just a substance abuse problem. The source says this is all about protecting their children.
So while there may be other areas where they differ -- such as in the apparent influence Arminka Helic and Chloe Dalton exert over her -- these are minor distractions and are not key issues in the divorce.  The only thing that stands between them is Brad's behavior and how he is effectively dealing with it.

Fom Pitt's side in People:
Pitt knew the marriage was in trouble and had been in counseling "to try to figure out how to make things better" for the kids, says a source in Pitt's circle. "He was willing to do anything, change any habit, change any lifestyle, to do what had to be done to make this work. And by 'make this work,' that means doing what has to be done to make even a split one that is amicable and in the best interests of the children."

Another insider who knows the couple says they "always had disagreements when it came to disciplining the kids. Brad has always been stricter. Brad will get frustrated sometimes and yell at the kids." But he "never used any kind of physical discipline," the source adds. "He was more about having rules. Angelina always had a more relaxed attitude when it came to the kids."
During "chaotic" moments, a Pitt source says, the actor advocated for rules, while "Angelina would plea, or not make the kids follow though."

Us
“The final divorce decision was only made one week ago,” the insider tells Us of Jolie Pitt’s resolve to permanently part ways with Pitt, 52. “An incident took place and prompted [Angelina] to act and file.”
...the insider tells Us that it “affected the entire family.” Though she may have acted hastily, pulling the plug on her relationship with the eternal heartthrob was not an easy call to make for Jolie Pitt, 41.
“She still says Brad is the love of her life, and the decision has weighed heavy on her heart,” the source adds. “Her priority now is the children.”

lainey
Every source I’ve talked to today maintains that she was still in love with him but that for her, she doesn’t think he’s in a place where he can be “positive around the family”.

E!
"Brad did not want the marriage to end," a source shared with E! News. "He was committed to doing what he needed to make it work. He was open to counseling."
Another insider added, "He is emotionally torn. Right now, he is devastated. He still loved Angelina and would have preferred they fight to make the marriage work. He was willing to do whatever it took to save the marriage

Brad's side of the story in People has been revised yet again to now acknowledge "making contact" with Maddox's shoulder.  TMZ first reported that Brad had "lunged" at Maddox:

We're told Brad then lunged at the boy and Angelina jumped in between them to block her husband. Brad connected in some fashion with his son.

A Brad friend later denied the story to Daily Mail.  The friends "quote" was edited since I first read it and posted it here.

In the original, Brad is painting himself as the victim of a smear campaign without specifically pointing a finger at Angelina's side as he had done previously.   But he then claims he is refraining from hitting back because he wants the children "to feel good about both parents."  The implication is clear and I would imagine Angelina's side was not happy.  The revised totally backs away from the suggestion that he had anything negative on Angelina and strikes a much more hopeful conciliatory tone.

A source close to the actor shot down a report that appeared on TMZ Friday claiming that the confrontation between the Hollywood star and his teenage son escalated to the point that Pitt struck the boy - 'intentionally or inadvertently' - early Friday.
These claims are exaggerated and fabricated,' a friend of the actor tells DailyMail.com.
'It's unfortunate for the whole family that people are insisting on continuing this endless smear campaign against Brad that hurts everyone. '
He is focused on the best interests of the kids right now, that is why he has remained silent despite the smears,' his friend explained, adding that Pitt wants his six children to feel good about both their parents.

Later revised on 9/24:
A source close to the actor shot down a report that appeared on TMZ Friday claiming that the confrontation between the Hollywood star and his teenage son escalated to the point that Pitt struck the boy - 'intentionally or inadvertently' - early Friday. '
These claims are exaggerated and fabricated,' a friend of the actor tells DailyMail.com.  'It's unfortunate for the whole family that people are insisting on continuing this endless smear campaign against Brad that hurts everyone. 'They are a solid family with two caring parents and a normal share of verbal disagreements like major households .  'Hopefully people can move on and leave them all alone to work this out.'   Pitt's friend went on to explain that the actor has nothing negative to say about Jolie and continues to have a huge amount of respect for the mother of his children.

The latest revision of Brad's story in People:
Now the source with knowledge of the incident is speaking exclusively to PEOPLE about Pitt's side of the story.

Pitt "was drunk, and there was an argument between him and Angelina," says the source. "There was a parent-child argument which was not handled in the right way and escalated more than it should have."

The source says Pitt did not hurt his son. "He is emphatic that it did not reach the level of physical abuse, that no one was physically harmed. He did not hit his child in the face in any way. He did not do that; he is emphatic about that. He put his hands on him, yes, because the confrontation was spiraling out of control."

"Brad made contact with Maddox in the shoulder area, and there was absolutely no physical injury to him."
A source close to Pitt says any accusations beyond that are "a combination of exaggerations and lies. They have taken the overall smallest kernel of truth – that a fight got out of hand and reached a regrettable peak, and that as a result DCFS is looking into it – and they are manipulating it to best suit their attempts to gain custody."

Original post:

Pitt “was drunk, and there was an argument between him and Angelina,” says the source. One of the couple’s older children “then got caught in the middle, literally. He stepped in front of Brad. There was a parent-child argument which was not handled in the right way and escalated more than it should have.”
The source says Pitt did not hurt his son. “He is emphatic that it did not reach the level of physical abuse, that no one was physically harmed. He did not hit his child in the face in any way. He did not do that; he is emphatic about that. He put his hands on him, yes, because the confrontation was nose to nose and was spiraling out of control.”
Any accusations beyond that are “a combination of exaggerations and lies,” the Pitt source contends, blaming sources close to Jolie. “They have taken the overall smallest kernel of truth – that a fight in which Brad was somewhat inebriated got out of hand and reached a regrettable peak, and that as a result DCFS is looking into it – and they are manipulating it to best suit their attempts to gain custody.”
The Pitt source adds that the star “was not black-out drunk” and that “he absolutely remembers that evening and has been interviewed at length to that effect.”

You can see the telltale trail of the revisions in Brad's story from the tweets that had headlined the article:

So while Brad's "friends" had complained that Angelina's side was "manipulating it to best suit their attempts to gain custody", that the "claims are exaggerated and fabricated",  and that "people are insisting on continuing this endless smear campaign against Brad", what has emerged is that the reports of "verbal abuse" and of his getting "physical" were accurate.  That there has been no "exaggeration, fabrication, smear or lies" .  On the contrary, it is Brad's story that has had to be revised to acknowledge that the incident was more serious than they were initially willing to admit.  The attempts at "manipulation", if you could call it that, and obfuscation have come from Brad's side as they've tried to come up with euphemisms -- "put his hands on" and "made contact with" -- to avoid admitting that Brad had hit Maddox.  The anonymous tip the DCFS received was that Brad had "attacked" his son.  They must know that any attempts at altering what truly transpired would ultimately be futile because the DCFS and the FBi  are involved and their report will be thorough even if they decide that Brad is not criminally liable.   It is also important to note that Angelina's side has not come forth with her version of what transpired or responded to Brad's "friends".

Unlike Angelina, Brad has never had to deal with this degree of negative public opinion.  He was always the "golden boy", emerging largely unscathed from his earlier divorce while Angelina was portrayed as the "other woman".  He had a teflon image and even Hollywood insiders initially didn't believe that he could have anger or substance abuse issues. He is used to having his way and not have to face criticism for his actions so this is all unfamiliar to him.

If there is anything that may hinder a reconciliation, it is Brad's slow, grudging acknowledgement of what he had actually done during the fateful trip back to LA.  Of course it is certainly possible that he is just mounting this defense for public consumption.  The seriousness of his actions on the plane -- and it must have been very serious for a third party (the pilot?) to report it to DCFS -- is a big blemish on his public image and may impact his box office appeal.  Hence his rather clumsy attempts at denying and trying to obscure key elements of the incident.  I think it would be far better for him to to come clean, apologize, and declare his resolve to change.  The staggered admissions is just harming his credibility.

There have been several reports where "friends" have repeated his willingness to "do anything", undergo counseling and "change any habit" in order to address the main issues in the divorce and make things work between them.  Whatever his protestations in public, he would have to be honest and convincing in front of his family.  Angelina acted to protect their children and she would have to be reassured that he will never again give her any reason to be concerned about their well-being.  The chasm between them isn't very wide  -- they're still in love and right now they're both devastated.  But out of concern for her children, Angelina will hold out for convincing proof that he has indeed conquered his demons.  The task ahead for Brad is not all that difficult, the path is clear and he is well-motivated to succeed.
