Angelina Jolie's tricks for the prettiest neutral nails: https://t.co/ahrwPEsphu pic.twitter.com/8pmJTrkrdj— Glamour (@glamourmag) November 3, 2015
If there's one celebrity you won't see wearing cheeky nail art, it's Angelina Jolie. While once in a blue moon she wears a dark color, she's a rare star who believes in uniform-dressing her fingertips, rather than changing them up for every red carpet. "We almost always use natural color for her fingernails," confirms the star's manicurist, Emi Kudo (their most recent pick was Chanel Le Vernis in Ballerina, "a whitish-pink natural color that's very clean and fresh").
That said, plenty of care and thought go into prettifying Jolie's hands, and we learned one of her little nail tricks from Kudo. In addition to slightly varying the nail color they choose within the spectrum of neutral/pale options, they also change Jolie's nail shape. "We have two different nail shapes we normally do, which depends on her natural nail’s length," Kudo explains. "[For an event last Friday] her nails were short after her trip to Cambodia, so we made them round. When her nails are longer, we make them something between round and oval." Lots of us go on auto-pilot when it comes to nail shape, so this is a great reminder to rethink yours based on length; doing more of a curve on very short nails has the effect of elongating the nail bed, while going more oval on longer tips gives a flattering almond shape.
One more tip to steal from Kudo's arsenal: She uses Maxus base and topcoats on Jolie because they're healthy for nails and go on in super-thin layers for a natural look. "I don’t want anything fake or artificial for Angie," she says. Oh, and her favorite moisturizer to use on the actress: Dr. Hauschka Regenerating Body Cream. We'll be stashing one of those in our purses before this fall weather gets too serious.
