I think the producers role in this is pivotal
Think about Neal
Think about George
Think about Matt
Think about james Lassiter
Think about Arnon and brad or todd or barbarba
Think about Modi or simon or people we just like
No one not one of them would in a million years
Be talking about financing with us in the morning
Knowing that we were trying.....
And then close a deal with another studio without even a call
When we developed this for 4 years and they owned it for four minutes
No one would not insist that they at the very least split the movie
No one would tell us that Danny and Aaron would never want to work with us when it wasn't true
And tell that not just to us but to universal as well soiling our reputation
No one has made movies with us would do that not to mention being a part of the studio and getting paid two million dollars a year

And on top of that he leaked the Fincher stuff and destroyed our relationship with David

He destroyed our relationship with David Gordon green

He has probably destroyed our relationship with Danny and if he hasn't already he will

He tried to talk Marty out of doing cleo and has done everything in his power to get him to do Sinatra instead

He almost destroyed my relationship with Angie

He never got Cameron to fix his script he never went to the set of the movie he never came to la to work on the movie or go to a preview or have a marketing meeting

He is constantly stirring up trouble internally ...telling me that people I love are not loyal and in fact are my enemies

You think it has something to do with him

You bet it does

Without drawing attention
Of telling anyone
Figure out how to settle out of Scott's deal
What we owe him
What products
We keep cleopatra and dragon tattoo
I don't care about others but you can ask Doug and mike what matters
See how much money we are talking about
Put a clause that neither side can badmouth each other ever and what happens if they do legally
I promise we won't do it today
I want to be ready
I know he has a long time to go but the emails he sent me through the years are probably grounds for termination
Anyway

Thx for forwarding. We'll need equity partners, so that is certainly something to offer PAR. Would hate to give up any distribution on a movie like this.

Had a brief conversation with Rick (still not feeling well).  He said Marty is interested, but the deal will have to “blow him away” and he will want a big development fee and producer credit.  He mentioned that he starts  shooting Silence soon, do you know anything about that picture? (It looks like a big independent with Emmet/Furla, Checchi Gori, etc.) He says Marty got more than 10MM on Wolf and Hugo, but he is getting back to me with quotes.  He also said Daniel Day Lewis and Leo were going to be in Cleo, in addition to Angelina, but that Rick “lives in the real world” and knows there will  be some kind of “box”.   Re Paramount, he will also get me that obligation, but he said “Amy knows about it” with the implication that we should be OK with Par co-fi because “Amy knows”.  I told him this could be a hurdle, but that perhaps they  could be passive without any right to distribute (Andrew, can we do that?), which he thought might work.   Let’s see what he comes back with.

I know you are busy busy with the movie and your thinking your gonna make Africa next
BUT if we can assume we are gonna make cleo (yahooooo. Yahoooo) in 2016 what if we go guns blazing full steam ahead and make salt next fall
And while Marty is Marty and finishing silence and you are making your movie we can fit it our favorite action hero .... Fuck that Lucy movie .... That should have been us and we can out do the fuck out of them
The idea is really good. She isn't who she thought she was and there is another Evelyn k a out there ...... Haven't seen it before and it stays in the zone

How are you?

Yes we can. I do think it's a great idea. I hear Koepp is available, it's kind of his thing....Helgeland is in post on his movie but I get the sense he might have room. Will get others and get back to you.

You never know because all scripts are in the eye of the beholder but I think you're going to really enjoy the new 5 Against A Bullet. Keanu interested if we are....

Marty had a great meeting with Eric Roth and is ready toake a directing deal on cleopatra he would want to do it with Angie and Ddl as Caesar and maybe Leo
We have to figure out how to split the movie with paramount without giving away the important international territories
This wouldn't happen until after he does the silence movie in Japan think of it probably for 2017

We are back November. I will be doing press but dying to find a night.
For some reason salt has come up a lot the last few days.
Most of all Cleo. We must keep on Marty. We can do this. I will be stalking him and fixing script in next few months. I have many ideas and believe I know what we must do.
Enjoy Fury. Look forward to seeing it.

I haven't, let's let that meeting happen if it ever does while pursuing someone else. Nothing remotely exclusive about it, and Silence is now a spring start so it's getting later anyway.

I think she'll reject the Baz style and lack of seriousness

Why don't we revisit Denis Villeneuve for 16?

Were you going to broach with Eric whether he's ok with someone coming on to reshape his script?

I'll call you today

Hi Amy

Any news

I heard the script was done and you are looking for directors. If the answer is no, Francis can take it. However if there is a possibility   he will be happy to come in and discuss the matter. All he wants is clarity so that he can move
on emotionally. He is very invested in the material and he would make a better picture than anyone out there since he has the vision necessary to pull it off.

However, if you guys really don’t want him, please say so.

All the best

Barry

I know, and she knows.

We need to find a way forward, and the thing with Marty is troubling. I'll deal with Rick and try figure out a meeting.

And we need a concrete plan for cutting the script, Sorrentino's the latest to say its just too much and AJ knows it.

I don't think we can just do greatest hits of her life.  We need a shape and a thrust to the story, and the script is a travelogue.  It's too big to make with anybody but a major director and we haven't gotten one --- with a great star who is brilliant and inspired casting and auspices that are generally extremely effective, and a fabulous subject.  It's the treatment of the subject that is stopping us.  The play is bullet-proof and the script isn't and a script this long means that no basic decision re narrative have been taken.  There's no way to cut 60 pages without telling a vastly different story.  The play does that work and does it brilliantly...

I just got an email from a smaller director friend I love and trust who understands that it needs to streamline and shorten but was so taken by how well constructed and timely it is. All the things we always wanted it to be and nothing less. The person went on and on about it

I think we need a good script editor to work with Eric. He's open or will do with me. He knows we need to make it shorter to not be as intimidating. And I think we continue to discuss with great directors.

My point is that we have done something special and I don't think we should adjust course but streamline and clarify and hold strong.

But of course, I'm open to all discussions.

that is a really interesting idea. i have started(more than started) to wonder why with one of the greatest stories of all time and the perfect actress who also happens to be a  giant movie star(not always the case) and a producer everyone knows makes fantastic  intelligent quality and commercial movies and a willing studio ....we have had such a hard time getting a director....for one reason or another i think they have  been scared and the script has not given anyone the foundation they are looking for  to point the way or provide the ownership over the material a director always needs to make it theres. no matter how you look at it  we have gone to people we would be lucky to get and people who would be lucky to get us and no one has been brave enough to join us.....

the interesting thing about the play besides the fact that we are adding shakespeare to our gang is that it covers so much of the same ground as the screenplay does but focus's it the story in what could be an excellent way.

the play understands the worlds fascination with Cleopatra "age cannot wither her, nor custom stale/her infinite     variety "

the play itself takes place in 40 bc just after caesars death when anthony is one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire...and is organized around their relationship and the battles between them and octavius. the good news is there is a lot of action in this part of the story.  the play is also about the opposing viewpoints of the west and east and the divid between a world ruled by reason and a world ruled by passion.  the other great thing about the play is it takes into account that Cleopatra  was brilliant and not at all the woman the romans wanted to portray her as...she is thought of as shake pears greatest female character.

the play could be opened up for almost anything we wanted to do but the good news is the story is clear and Octavian is the villain. we could start the movie with julius caesars death if we wanted to set the stage....

this might be a super brilliant way of moving forward...unless of course we want to do a ten part miniseries

Re:

Why don't we work from the play?  The Antony and Cleopatra story is the greatest, most romantic, epic part of the story and Shakespeare told is magnificently.  It's the greatest play he ever wrote and it's changed the life of every woman who played it.  It's the best female part he ever wrote.  We could do this, slightly adapt it/open it up for more cinematic action, and have something with which to get Ang or Mendes or McQueen or anybody we want.  If we did this, and had Fassbender or Tom Hardy --- like that --- as Antony, we would have a stunning movie.  Look at Polanski's Macbeth or Olivier's Richard or Hamlet or Zeffirrelli's Romeo or Shrew with the Burtons or Branagh's Henry or the Orson Welles Chimes at Midnight or even Baz's Shrew --- these are genius movies and big fat hits, and they shower glory on everybody who touches them.  And Antony and Cleopatra is more filmic and has more unbelievably great scenes than any of them.  Ane we could actually get it done for real and with a great, great basis.

I actually think this is a great fit for you.  It's humanist, political, modern, classical, emotional, funny, enormous in aspect and scale and in its effect, and openhearted and elemental in how it achieves enormous emotion.  It's an action film on one level and a saga --- like Steinbeck or Ferber --- in its scope and macro view of a churning, changing world --- and its subject really is gender.  It's also a hugely beloved series of books that I'd like to make many of.  The series is honestly spectacular.  It's like Grapes of Wrath somehow crossed by The Member of the Wedding, which the scale and breadth of the former, and the detail and the intimacy of the latter.  It needs your ambition and your reach and your need to be great.  I need it to be great.  You can direct it, play it if you want (nobody better on earth than you to play this Mother Courage) handle the kids magnificently by being IN the scenes with them --- but mostly I want to tap into the scale and capaciousness of you, of who you are, and make a movie that wants 100 per cent of you.  This is that movie.  I have good instincts that tend to work --- this will work.  I know it.  This is something you should do --- not for careers but for life.  Some things you don't say no to.  This is one of them.  I know in my heart what this is and it wants you.

It will no doubt be a great film. So for me the question is if I am the best person for it. I have many thoughts and questions and would love a couple of days to let it settle.
There is one other story I have been considering and need to weigh it against.
How frustrating as a director you can only do one every few years.
Little House really does have my head spinning. I didn't expect it to be so great. I suppose I had the show in my head.
It's very special.

Amy and I have a seriously brilliant script on Little House on the Prairie --- written by Abi Morgan. It's genuinely great. It also has a great part for you which is NOT the main part (as you are not 11) but is a beautiful part, if you felt like playing it. It's meant to be a series based on the incredible series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder and it's like Grapes of Wrath --- giant landscape, huge, mythic American-ness, and a gorgeous family story at its heart. I really love it a lot. And it's incredibly important to Amy and me.

I know your work life is not uncomplicated but I think this has your name written on it in big letters.

There is one thing I am developing as a director that was going to be the plan if Cleo wasn't ready. Nothing is signed but just so you know. I would be thrilled and honored to read anything you would consider me for.
On Cleo, I want more than anything to develop with Marty. I think we should keep secretly slipping it to see if there is other interest. But plan time for Eric and Marty and for us all to keep attacking the script. I will give it a once over myself next week. I'm sure that all of this will absolutely end up resulting in an amazing film. The difficult ones often do.

And he told me to tell you straight away (which you beat me) so that he doesn't waste your time. He rarely ever reads anything this quickly, but as you know he was quite taken by you.  Xx

It can't be a director who leans on shaky can and improv. That's great but for other films. We need a classicist.

Yes --- I think we could give it to him pretty easily.  We would need to stop the factory way in which he sometimes works, but people say that the Moses movie is superb and he is a world-class, great filmmaker and one of the very few of those for whom the acting remains front and center.  I think in the end we won’t get Marty (and it’s MUCH more than a six-month difference), and he’ll be relieved not to have to feel the pressure of us waiting for him.

I think we would get Gladiator because, frankly, we would require it.  And we will be tougher in the script than he will.  And we’re an imposing group.  He’s a very good collaborator when people are not intimated by him --- and he wants a partnership.

Adding Amy.

My vote is to send --- do we have consensus?

If we knew for sure we were getting gladiator...
His digital period films are not shot with the most depth. Maybe we could help decide the dp?
Let's also discuss Marty again. Is it really possible that six month later it could be him? Is that worth waiting or ?
Happy we are not giving up on the right person. I do have other crazy ideas.

If somebody thinks I’m doing anything on Cleopatra, I’d like to know what it is.  I’m slightly lost as to what anybody wants.

Alfredson is developing The Snowman at Universal, but that’s it.  He could take a job.  He’s been called about Cleopatra.  Remember that Alfredson was who Angie wanted --- if we tell her that he’s available, that’s who it’s going to be.

Cary Fukunaga just started shooting a movie with Idris Elba that takes him through the fall, and he is developing about 19 other things --- none of which are set after.  They also know that Cleopatra has been nosing around him.  If he wanted to have a conversation with him, he would be up for it, but there’s a lot of stuff on his plate.

Audiard has a French language film that he’s shooting this fall, and then has an English language western that he was developing behind it, but we could certainly get a read and gauge his interest.  It will take him forever to read the script, as his English isn’t very good.

Fincher…what do you want to do?

My inclination would be to go to Fincher, box him into a price, bond the movie, let someone else finance it, and call it a day.

Alfredson and Fincher I more sure of their epic filmmaking.
I know Fincher is who he is but he's brilliant and would ensure a broad audience. And I believe I can help with the balance you are looking for. We could be in prep in no time. He is meticulous and will create a smart woman one no one has seen before.
I feel the same about alfredson and you will be more comfortable. I do think he is now not available but please check. He would be amazing

I'm sure you can hear my frustration as I can hear yours. I'm sorry if I seemed ungrateful for your enthusiasm to get this made. I was very excited to finally meet with Marty and when I realized the reality I was upset.
I do think there are many great directors and if we hold right together and stay on it, we will find the best person. I would love to so this next year and it's all I want to do. I will give her everything I've got and we will make something amazing.
Let's throw one last Hail Mary at Marty and also be ready to move on.
Thank you for calling and let's speak soon

Brad and I were making decisions on projects based on this going in the fall. If it's not and we wait and hope and pray for Marty then I will but it's just a lot to take in and a lot to bet on after five years. But if all works then it would be a dream. So we wait...

Well I know less than both of you but here is what I do know ....that nothing is really happening until it's shooting including silence and I don't want to sell myself bullshit I think the fact that Marty s loved  adored Angie wants to sit down with her and Eric and go through the script before he starts shooting is pilot ( I guess that means within the next couple of weeks) loves the subject matter has always wanted to do a movie about it, loves women, can handle the intimate and the giant epic at the same time
can get us the caesar we dreamt of and is the fucking greatest director on the fucking planet  for this movie has got to be good news.

I know he is planning on shooting the silence at the beginning if the year and I know he has other stuff in development and no offense to Thoes movie they can't possibly be as important and thrilling as this one....
If Angie does her movie with brad in the fall and or is it the first if the year and Marty does silence at the same time  we could be thinking about starting at the end if 15. For Christmas 16.

He may have other things

But not like this

Have the meeting with him

You never know what's gonna happen in life

The one thought I would ask you both is about her "bald". I think that made sense in earlier drafts but if we are saying every time she's in bed she has no hair or a shaved head it changes the sensuality. I wonder if we should keep it out and discuss as an idea with the director. But I worry we could scare off a director.
The point was always that she be clean and raw and I think with straight black hair and no make up we would achieve the same and not distract.
I make this point incase we are starting to send it out we should ask to remove that one description.

You’ve had a meeting with David.  I’m not even clear why there is a meeting unless it’s for Michael in which case they should go have a drink and none of us need to be involved.  I have no need for a meeting since as you know I talk to David all the time.  He wants to make the movie in October and if that’s the case we should plan it, budget it, cast it, and obviously he has to be hired before any of that can happen.   I’m fine on the marketing stuff as I said I was.  It’s you who wasn’t okay with it but if you are now, that’s great.

As for Cleo, I have said everything I intend to say on it.  I’m happy to deal with Angie and Eric and tell her what I think about this nonsense with David, which I think is unfair to you and ugly and manipulative.  Eric is manipulating the situation because a) he wrote a half baked 700 page script, and b) she’s his friend.  She’s ready to turn her attention to it (although she read only 30 pages of, or rather ‘glanced’ at them, in the new draft) and is pissed because her fantasy toy-box isn’t ready for her to further toy with.  The feeling you get from me about this is project is exactly what I stated.  I’m long past doing any movie I don’t run or don’t believe in, or at least minimally trust the person who IS running it (for instance, David, who I trust enormously) and that’s what this clearly is going to be.  This is your thing with her and it’s entirely clear that there is no room for anybody else.  She gives notes to Eric without talking to anybody, is having director conversations without talking to anybody --- and that’s fine as long as we don’t pretend it isn’t true.  I just have zero interest in participating in a fiction and since I think she has absolutely no idea what she wants or what she thinks the script should be, it’s nothing to me but a staggering, colossal waste of time and money.  I don’t want to waste my time or your money.  And if the script by some miracle comes in and it’s a work of overwhelming genius, that won’t change my mind because the process will be a misery.  The simple fact is you like this kind of thing more than me, and I know where I want to be and where I don’t.

The still-simpler fact for me is that when you behave like the producer of the movie it tends to inhale everything around it which may be fine for you, except that I don’t want to be inhaled, and I don’t want to be at the mercy of anybody else.  We have these issues always on the movies you are most interested in, and they are incredibly thorny to navigate as the resolute feeling I have in these instances is that I hate trying to fight my way into my own projects.  It’s a horrible feeling and a lousy place for me to be, and also a disincentivizing way to deal with a capable person.   I love what I do when I am given at least the illusion of some freedom but the micro-management of this between you and your staff and everybody who really has no role in it but has to be made to feel as though they do is honestly suicide-inducing.  It’s stultifying and suffocating and to be completely honest, I don’t want a producing partner.  I want a studio partner.  And when you say things to me like ‘we paid for the script and we deserve the fun of a meeting’ as you did last week, it makes me want to walk as far away as I can get.  I have monumental respect for you and what you bring to the work we do together but the kum-baya part of it is a giant drag on everything for me, and I would be best left out of it as it makes me seriously ponder why I would ever want to continue doing this.

I would also note --- just to say it --- that literally every single time you have said, on any movie where we have faced these issues, ‘maybe it’s best if I pull back on this a little’ that this has lasted for exactly ten minutes.  That’s not you.  And it’s a fantasy to think that that will ever — or should --- happen.   I love working with you but you have to acknowledge that when you feel cornered, as in this instance by Angie and Eric, you are not at your best and not particularly great at listening to other people.  I’ve said --- as have you --- numerous times how I would like to deal with this movie and the minute she gets you on the phone and evidences the slightest displeasure with you, it’s all out the window.  That’s your choice but you have to admit that it leaves everybody else absolutely nowhere.  In particular, it leaves ME absolutely nowhere.   And if underneath this you are asking why I won’t deal with the Angie part of it, or why setting and re-setting a Fincher meeting three times as though yours and Michael’s are the only schedules that matter, and that it leaves me feeling lousy and shitty and uncared about, that’s why.  It’s not a great thing to make anybody feel like they are insignificant but that is where I am, and since I don’t like it or respect it, my only choice is to withdraw...

I've left for you a bunch and I realize you are buzy

Since you don't want to have an actual conversation. I will do this here and then we can forget it

In terms of jobs we should set a meeting for next week basically you developed the script and did a great job

It's ridiculous that the studio is going back and forth between you and David trying like idiots to set a meeting .... I think you should figure out as the producer how to get a meeting with the director you want to hire on the movie to come in and tell us how he wants to make the movie. That is the way it normally works and that is what you should  do because this is already starting aaa backwards  and its gonna be Elizabeth and mike going back and forth between you and David and mark and it will be the way the whole movie takes place.  There is no urgency on our part

Apart from the fact that it is probably the best script we have and that we want really want to make the movie
But there isn't a release date issue driving the process and I doubt whether David who is in post on his movie an Aaron who is writing the show are available to work on it but I leave that with you guys

He is obviously the director everyone wants
I doubt there will be issues besides marketing controls which he will insist on because that. Is the way it works with him and I don't see why he would do it differently

The question will be do you and the studio feel okay having him do the creative on the campaign

Things with David and you have a tendency to take up a lot of energy
Maybe it's me and not anyone else and since my own behavior is really the only thing. I can control I am gonna take the stress out of this for myself and have Elizabeth and mike tell me when the meeting is gonna happen and go from there

It's not an expensive movie but it will be a prestigious movie and one hat will be great to have

I don't want to talk about it anymore either

In terms of cleopatra whether you want to talk about his or not we are getting a script from Eric who we have paid millions of dollars too. Is your friend and mine and Angie's.  You can she she is a spoiled brat and you can say you don't care and you can say all of it

I think the idea if the script hasn't become a movie is a fanatastic and fascinating possibility but the play is not written about a modern woman it's about a sexual temptress which would really have to be explored and revised and made contemporary there is no reason to say the same thing about  her gay has always been said that was why we wanted to make stacey a book in the first place

And my memory is that we bought the treatment for this book together but no matter

I can't remember a time where I have reminded you who brought what to whom

I'm not getting into the whole David thing on this
He wants to do It and you know that or at least be offered it because in there investors parlor games that
Is what goes on and I am not responsible for any of it I have been consistent to he point of discomfort on this subject and got blindsided from all sides this week

David has only ever done what he wants to do and no pressure from them or u is gonna change that

Maybe it's not a movie but for sure it will never be ifs evryone makes ultimatums myself included

We should get Eric's script next week and decide what the next move it perhaps we will be surprised

It's impossible for me to work with u on this if we don't engage

You have always has a funny attitude about his movie and I don't know why

Again perhaps it is best if I pull back on it a little and let you and mike and Elizabeth take the reins

There are conversations to be has on girl that make all this even more complicated

And I go k michael is calling you about hem and Elizabeh is into it

Lets you and I take a few days and let cooler heads prevail

David is all over this and they talk about it all the time
He talked about it at dinner I've been trying to talk to you about it
They are all beAt and they play games with each other
We knew how pissed  she and Eric would be that we gave him the jobs script and if you don't think he made. Big ducking deal out if that your crazy
Have you forgotten how this works
He was great on jobs but we haven't gotten  close to he hard part yet
We can't even schudule one ducking meeting

And we haven't even had a meeting yet

Steve Frears
Paul Greengrass (personal favorite)
Alejandro Innaritu
Peter Jackson
Ang Lee (go back?)
Baz Luhrmann (controllable at budget?)
Sam Mendes (would have to wait until 2016)
David O. Russell
Christopher Nolan (SR says won't do)
Julian Schnabel
Martin Scorsese
Paolo Sorrentino
Spielberg
Wachowski's
Peter Weir (SR no)
David Yates

Ha!
Greengrass (his you are there thing would modernize story)
Tom hooper would guarantee commerciality
David o would carve a great movie out and make it modern too
Elizabeth brought up Scorcese but he's impossible with budget and tends to bloat out period pieces ala Gangs
Could Angie direct? Her film was tight and focused on love story
Female director could be cool, like a patty Jenkins if you'd gamble on scale with indie directors
Steve McQueen? Could have interesting political perspective on imperial overreach
I like Paul or Tom Hooper

Pop Culture Update

Angelina Jolie Replaces Manager with Agent

Angelina Jolie fans, rejoice! You will no doubt be seeing more of the lush-lipped actress now that she finally has an agent. For years, Jolie has relied on her controlling manager, Geyer Kosinski, who blocked her from the Hollywood community and demanded producing credits and fees for himself on most of her projects. But Kosinski’s stock tumbled with “Gravity,” when the monster hit moved from Universal to Warner Bros. over money and Jolie was replaced by Sandra Bullock, who will reap a fortune and probably get a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Now that Jolie has signed with UTA, insiders say Kosinski has been marginalized, but can save face by saying he’s still “involved.” Said one source, “He gets nothing, unless it’s a project he brings to her.”
